Juggling Two Balls—Smoking (Re)Normalization and Harm Reduction: E-Cigarettes—Facts and Misconceptions in Taiwan

The increasing popularity of e-cigarettes, especially among adolescents, has alarmed health advocates and government officials, dominating the tobacco control narrative in the past few years. According to the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, the percentage of Taiwanese teenagers reporting use of e-cigarettes in the past 30 days rose from 2.01% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.82% to 2.23%) in 2014 to 3.54% (95% CI = 3.30% to 3.80%) in 2017. However, during the same period, prevalence of cigarettes declined from 11.51% (95% CI = 9.84% to 13.42%) to 8.26% (95% CI = 7.80% to 8.76%) among senior high school students, and from 5.00% (95% CI = 4.36% to 5.74%) to 2.66% (95% CI = 2.38% to 2.96%) among junior high school students, with figures for both groups reaching historical lows. This trend is similar to population-level trends observed in both the United Kingdom and the United States, but only future long-term studies will be able to clarify if it is consistent or not with the fears that e-cigarette may act as a “gateway” to cigarette smoking renormalization.

The common practice of annually age grouping children in education, likely done under the assumption of similarly aged children sharing similar abilities and learner characteristics, may actually undermine equity and fairness in student assessments. This strategy has received criticism for (dis) advantaging those older children born closer to the “cut off” date for entry into an academic year and for promoting the existence of relative age effects (RAEs). This paper explores the possibility that RAEs may be prevalent in the end-of-year attainment levels of junior high school physical education (PE) students. The PE end-of-year attainment scores were collected from 582 students in grades 7, 8 and 9 (aged 11–14 years) in the United Kingdom (UK). The results from a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated a significant main effect for month of birth (p = .001) and gender (p = .001). Follow up interviews with heads of PE (HoPE) revealed a lack of awareness of RAEs and inconsiderate assessment strategies, which deviated from the requirements of the formal curriculum. The implications of RAEs in school PE assessment and possible recommendations are discussed.

<p><span lang="EN-US">Despite the rising rate of smoking in sub-Sahara African countries, measures to control the tobacco epidemic have been limited to developed countries. The purpose of the present study was to recommend predictive models for determining predictors of smoking tendencies among junior high school students in Ghana. The 2009 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) served as the data source. The GYTS is a school-based survey designed to enhance the ability of countries to monitor tobacco use among youth and to guide the implementation and evaluation of tobacco control and prevention programs. Logit model and forward selection were used to choose predictive variables for smoking tendencies and behaviors. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, Area under the curve (AUC) and C-Index were validation tools used to assess the predictive power of recommended models. Results showed promising potential for different predictive models: where students smoked, having friends who smoked, having people smoke in their presence, chewing tobacco products, and a student’s sex significantly predicted their smoking tendencies. </span></p>

The prevalence of smoking habits among children and adolescents has increased quantitative and qualitative, which further elevates the risk of diseases. Furthermore, the 2014 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) (data showed the intention to quit smoking by 88.2% of students, although only 24% received assistance in affiliated programs; hence support is required from the immediate environment. Therefore, the purpose of this research, was to determine the effect of counseling in the success of smoking cessation in junior high school students. The research design used was a prospective cohort. The subjects of this research include all junior high school students with the smoking habit, of which 40 participants were selected. These respondents were provided with smoking cessation counseling for six sessions (4 months). Survival analysis was used to evaluate the data collected. After the six counseling sessions, the cessation success and failure rates were 75% and 25%, respectively. Smoking cessation was related to nicotine addiction (p<0.001; Adj.HR 25.2;95% CI 4.9-129.9) and activeness in counseling (p=0.001; Adj.HR 12.8; 95% CI 2.8-57.9). This research is expected to help students with the smoking habit terminate the practice, subsequently reducing the prevalence in Poso Regency.

Reading is the basic in learning every subject. The more understanding the text, the more information students can gain. However, the reading materials that the students use is not appropriate based on syllabus. Therefore, the reading materials should be developed to fulfil the syllabus and the students' needs also. Because English is included Content Area Reading, so the development of reading materials is based on content area which focus on strengthen the vocabularies, specifically the unfamiliar ones, by giving glossary and related pictures. The developed text is only focus in the first semester which is descriptive and recount text. The research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Medan. The data was taken from interviewing the English teacher and distributing questionnaires for 30 students in grade VIII-4. The data showed that students need materials which is related to their environment and constructed by familiar vocabularies. Based on the result of the study, conclusion and suggestion are directed to the English teacher who is teaching in that school to provide reading materials based on syllabus and students' needs regularly.
