DEVELOPING ENGLISH SPEAKING MATERIALS OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT FOR GRADE X STUDENTS OF CULINARY STUDY PROGRAM AT SMK NEGERI 10 MEDAN

This research has aims to develop English speaking materials for grade X culinary study program at SMKN 10 Medan, first this research was conducted by Research and Development through has Six stages, they are: gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by the experts, revising and the last was Final product. The subject in this research was students grade X boga 3 at SMKN 10 Medan where the students consisting of 36 students, the instrumentations for data collection were giving a questionnaire and interview, questionnaire was administrate and it answer by the students to get the students need, and the interview was administrate to the English teacher, the result of the questionnaire and interview prove that the student need some appropriate speaking material in descriptive text that has relation with their program study, that is culinary. Thus, developing English speaking materials consist of three units: lets’ talk about chef Juna (describing People), how the smell, taste and texture of your favorite food? (Describing things) and the last units was talk about famous restaurant (Describing Place). The product has been validated by two experts, and the average score are 4, 75 are coming from English Lecture’s, the second average score 4, 89 are coming from English teacher. From the score above, it means that the product categorized as relevant for grade X students of culinary study program.Key words: R&D, English for Specific Purposes, English speaking materials, culinary study program.

DEVELOPING ENGLISH WRITING MATERIALS OF PROCEDURE TEXT FOR STUDENTS GRADE 11 OF CULINARY PROGRAM AT SMK NEGERI 10 MEDAN

Students’ worksheet, as one of learning tools that is used to involve the students to work actively during teaching and learning process, should be developed based on the students’ need. Students’ worksheet with scientific approach in listening skill has not applied. A good student’s worksheet must be satisfied criteria of valid, practical and effective. This research is a developmental research using Research and Development (RnD). It has been conducted on 35 students of SMK Negeri 10 Medan grade X for Multimedia Program. In this study, data obtained from Curriculum syllabus analysis, students’ need analysis and results of validation. Students’ need analysis was done to analyze the students’ perception about the previous learning materials and to know what kind of learning material they need. All of student answer the questionnaire in students’ worksheet in listening skill. From their answers are summarized into questions and answers for students’ worksheet, especially in the listening activity. Keywords: Students’ worksheet, scientific approach, listening skill.

DEVELOPING MIND MAPPING TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT GRADE XI AT SMAN 1 SIBORONGBORONG

This research was aimed at develops technique as media in teaching writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted using R & D method by Borg & Gall (2003). The research took place at SMAN 1 Siborongborong. The sample consisted of class 11-XI. The evaluators of the media were two experts. The instruments employed in this study were questionnaire, interview, and test. The findings of the study were the quality of the developed technique as media viewed from the experts is very good (88 %). The final product of the technique as media was assessed by gave questionnaires to the students to know the students’ responses about the media. Most students gave positive responses. Most students said that the media was interesting and it could help them to understand descriptive texts easily. The results of the test show that the technique as media improved their ability in writing descriptive texts (average score: 80, 12).The scoring system was based on five aspects; namely content, organization, vocabulary, language use, mechanics. Therefore, the writer suggests that English teachers develop technique as one of the creative way to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts.Keywords: Descriptive texts, pictures, writing.

DEVELOPING MEDIA IN TEACHING WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT BY USING PREZI FOR GRADE VII OF SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 1 MEDAN

The aim of this study was to develop media in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text for grade VII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, analyzing data, designing media, validating by the experts, revising and final products. The subject of the study was grade VII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 35 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students need English media in teaching writing which can motivate the students to understand about the descriptive text. The product has been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the percentage was 93,6%. The product was categorized as “Excellent” media in teaching writing descriptive text. The result of the products was presentation that contain in audio-visual media to be used in mastering the descriptive text writing. AN ERROR ANALYSIS OF SIMPLE PAST TENSE IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT BY THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 2 DOLOKSANGGUL

The purpose of this study is to describe the errors in simple past tense of recount text. In addition, this study is also aimed to describe the causes of those errors. This study apllied the descriptive qualitative approach of which the data were obtained from the recount texts that were written by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Doloksanggul. The data were collected by using students’ recount texts and interview. The data then were analyzed by identifying the errors first, then describing the errors, and the last explaining the errors. The errors that occurred in students’ recount text are error of omission, error of mis-formation, error of addition and error of mis-ordering. The result of the study indicates that the students made 893 of simple past tense errors which were 0,45% errors of misordering, 3,58% errors of addition, 30,12% errors of omission, and 65,85% errors of mis-formation. The dominant type of errors made by the student is errors of mis-formation. The students’ errors were caused by 36,17% intralingual interference, 58,23% interlingual interference, and 5,6% communication strategies.

READING MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT BASED ON PROBLEM BASED LEARNING GRADE X STUDENTS OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AT SMK SINAR HUSNI MEDAN

The aims of this research were: (1) to find out the suitable the reading materials for grade eight students of SMP N 1 Kotapinang, (2) to find out how to design English reading materials based on problem based learning which is suitable to the needs of students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data,analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was class X students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After , anlyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing the questionnaire to 38 students to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needs English reading materials which cointain English relating to their daily life environment. Thus, developing English reading mateials were descriptive text. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 5,17 from English Lecturer and 4,68 from English Teacher. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for Grade X Students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This research developed Problem Based Learning materials. It covers reading skill and consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement tasks. The input was in the form of written texts, vocabulary list and grammar explanation. The students were encouraged to do discussion and involve in active investigation to solve and do tasks. Most of the tasks are done in a small group discussion and in pairs. Based on the results of materials evaluation, the content, language, presentation and graphic of the developed materials are considered appropriate. DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS IN REPORT TEXT FOR STUDENTS OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM AT SMK NEGERI 2 MEDAN

The objective of this study was to develop the appropriate English reading materials in report text for students of electrical engineering program at SMK Negeri 2 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to 35 students of electrical engineering program and administering interview to the teacher. The result of this study was a set of developed teaching reading materials as supplementary entitled “English for Electrical Engineering Students” which covers of three chapters on the topics of (1) things in electrical about hammer drill, (2) natural phenomena about lightning and aurora, (3) social phenomena about short circuit and electric shock. It is also accompanied by documents such as syllabus, lesson plans, reading materials, worksheets, and assessments. DEVELOPING ENGLISH SPEAKING MATERIALS BASED ON CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR STUDENTS OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AT SMK SINAR HUSNI MEDAN

This research aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of electrical engineering study program at SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.The subject of this study were students of class X-l2 of electrical engineering study program consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 38 respondents to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for electrical engineering study program. Thus, The materials were then developed through Contextual Teaching and Learning approach which implementation by REACT (relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating, and transferring) and developed with their study program and work life situation. The learning materials were developed into 6 units of speaking material. by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,5 or 90% from English Lecturer and 4,4 or 87,6% from English teacher.It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade X students of electrical engineering study program. DEVELOPING ENGLISH WRITING MATERIALS IN NARRATIVE TEXT FOR THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

This research aims to develop the English writing materialsin Narrative text for the Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School by using picture series. This study was conducted using R & D method of Borg & Gall (2003). The research took place in SMP HKBP Pardamean Medan. The sample was the Eighth Grade Students that consisted of 29 students. The evaluators of the developed materials were two experts namely an English lecturer and an English teacher. There were some instruments that were applied in this study namely observation, questionnaire and interview. The finding of the study was the suitable English writing materials inNarrative text based on the students’ needs and level in SMP HKBP Pardamean Medan. The developed writing materials then were validated by the experts and it got 4,20 based on the highest interval of numerical scale was 5,00. In the form of percentage, it got 84% so it was categorized as “very good”. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed English writing materials in Narrative text are appropriate to students’ needs and level and interesting for them. Automatically, it can be used for the Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School in teaching-learning activity in the classroom toincrease the students’ ability in writing Narrative text and motivate them in learning writing especially in Narrative Text. DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS BASED ONCONTEXTUAL TAECHING AND LEARNINGFOR GRADE X STUDENTS OF AUDIO VIDEO PROGRAM AT SMK N 1 PERCUT SEI TUAN

This study aims to develop English reading materials needed by students of Vocational School and develop English reading materials for students of Audio Video Program based on Contextual Teaching and Learning. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. It was conducted in SMK N 1 PercutSei Tuan, especially grade X. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 23 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Audio Video program.The average scores are the first from English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as suitable or approriate for grade X of Audio Video program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Audio Video Program.
