Life saving devices such as incubators, oxygen caps, baby warmers and constant intensive lighting can actually impede the health and development of infants. This paper discusses (a) the reasons for studying the effects of the environment on infants and the needs and problems of human development (achieving developmental tasks and deprivations affecting development); (b) the dynamics of infant environments (organizing the sensory field, socialization, and autonomy); (c) design implications and the nature of professional responsibilities. The purpose is to translate clinical and behavioral findings into terms applicable to engineering and design.

This chapter discusses the absolute importance of a good start in early childhood as the foundation for later human development. It focuses on two core development concerns: under-nutrition, and preschool circumstances and interventions. The Young Lives countries show progress in stunting reduction, notably in Peru where reducing under-nutrition has been given national importance. The ongoing prevalence of stunting nevertheless is a clear channel through which poverty in childhood results in disadvantaged development. Interventions to improve early childhood circumstances have been shown to work for the poorest children. Indeed, nutritional supplementation has been found to support healthy growth, especially for young children and poorer children. Interventions to support infants also have the potential to support mothers and primary caregivers. As these findings suggest, to ensure their survival, health, and development, young children need a multi-sectoral response.

Family planning is not only a matter of human rights; it is also central to women’s empowerment, reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development. -Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director, UNFPA Family planning is considered a development “best buy” and a life-saving intervention for millions of women and girls. Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) a collaboration at the international level with the help of the UN Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health. FP2020: Women at the Center recognizes the rights of women and girls to choose openly whether and when they want to have babies. In order to promote family planning, it is essential for women and couples to ensure access to preferred contraceptive methods to secure one’s well-being and autonomy of women, while supporting the health and development of communities. A growing body of research shows that prenatal stress can have significant effects on pregnancy, maternal health and human development across the lifespan. These effects may occur directly through the influence of prenatal stress-related physiological changes on the developing fetus, or indirectly through the effects of prenatal stress on maternal health and pregnancy outcome which, in turn, affect infant health and development. Animal and human studies suggest that activation of the maternal stress response and resulting changes in endocrine and inflammatory activity play a role in the aetiology of these effects. Ongoing research is focusing on clarifying these mechanisms, understanding the role of racial and cultural factors in these effects, and examining the epigenetic and transgenerational influences of prenatal stress.

Human development from conception to death can be viewed from a number of perspectives, including biologic, cognitive, emotional, social, and moral. This chapter reviews the major features of various facets of development from infancy through toddlerhood, preschool, school-aged, preadolescence, adolescence, the transition into early adulthood, adulthood, and late adulthood. It includes consideration of developmental tasks and challenges, as well as the importance of the environmental influence of family, peers, school, and the broader social milieu. Psychological aspects and specific stages of elderly persons are also described.
