In 1991, the College of St. Catherine, a Catholic college for women in St. Paul, Minnesota, set out to improve recruitment and retention. It soon become clear that they couldn't seriously make improvements without taking a good, hard look at what the college did—and didn't—offer students. So, they turned to the bigger job of examining and building a new culture of learning. Here's what that effort looked like.

The rapidly changing world, the increasing competition in the labor market, the widespread introduction of digital technologies set new challenges for education. In the Czech Republic, as in other Eastern European countries, which simultaneously entered the European Union and are developing in line with general trends, research educators are considering a new learning culture that is in line with the knowledge society and aimed at active, constructive, independent, motivated and holistic learning. As the principles and features of the new learning culture, they single out the construction of educational material based on constructivist theories of learning, the creation of a new active learning environment, the changing role of the teacher and student, the use of teaching methods that are consistent with its new tasks and goals.

AbstractObjective: Since more diverse audiences attend universities, nowadays, more advanced educational approaches are required. The current study explores the role of culture of learning transformations in facing this challenge. We employ the notion of ‘cultures of learning’ to draw attention to the socio-cultural, sustainable and competence-oriented aspects of key educational practices. We are focusing on advances in students’ learning-culture, which are implemented at the university: interdisciplinary, transformative sustainability learning and experiential learning.Methodology: The paper considers practical issues related to the educational approaches, their benefits and limitations.Findings: The results of the observations indicated that students’ learning culture was highly affected by educational approaches.Value Added: We highlight that mutual relations exist between learning-culture and teaching-culture and exactly the student-teacher dialogue should be changed to transform traditional learning in higher education.Recommendations: Interdisciplinarity and creativity can serve as the key factors in establishing a productive educational cycle that fosters a learning-culture based on students’ needs and values consideration.

The purpose of this paper is to build on the insights of educators regarding the relationship between culture and online learning. More specifically, this paper aims to explore the ways in which students’ culture of learning is changing as a result of the introduction of various modes of online learning. It also aims to explore the ways in which culture and cultural values affect the application and success of online-learning strategies. Particular attention is directed to learners’ perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of online communication. The paper is based on primary data drawn from undergraduate female students’ responses regarding how online education is changing their learning culture and how their culture is influencing online education. Sixty-seven undergraduate Saudi female students participated in the survey. The literature in the field of online and distance education is explored to help answer these questions. The participants indicated that online education helped them to challenge some cultural norms, enhance their learning culture, and improve their communication skills.
