Aim: To facilitate the orthognathic shared decision-making process by identifying and applying existing research evidence to establish the potential consequences of living with a severe malocclusion. Methods: A comprehensive narrative literature review was conducted to explore the potential complications of severe malocclusion. A systematic electronic literature search of four databases combined with supplementary hand searching identified 1024 articles of interest. A total of 799 articles were included in the narrative literature review, which was divided into 10 themes: Oral Health Related Quality Of Life; Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction; Masticatory Limitation; Sleep Apnoea; Traumatic Dental Injury; Tooth Surface Loss; Change Over Time; Periodontal Injury; Restorative Difficulty; and Functional Shift and Dual Bite. A deductive approach was used to draw conclusions from the evidence available within each theme. Results: The narrative literature review established 27 conclusions, indicating that those living with a severe malocclusion may be predisposed to a range of potential consequences. With the exception of Oral Health Related Quality Of Life, which is poorer in adults with severe malocclusion than those with normal occlusions, and the risk of Traumatic Dental Injury, which increases when the overjet is >5 mm in the permanent and 3 mm in the primary dentition, the evidence supporting the remaining conclusions was found to be of low to moderate quality and at high risk of bias. Conclusion: This article summarises the findings of a comprehensive narrative literature review in which all of the relevant research evidence within a substantive investigative area is established and evaluated. Notwithstanding limitations regarding the quality of the available evidence; when combined with clinical expertise and an awareness of individual patient preferences, the conclusions presented may facilitate the orthognathic shared decision-making process and furthermore, may guide the development of the high-quality longitudinal research required to validate them.

Introduction: This systematic literature review analyzed published evidence on IgA nephropathy (IgAN), focusing on US epidemiology, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and economic burden of illness. Methods: Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, Embase®, MEDLINE®, Cochrane, and Econlit (January 2010 to June 2020) were searched, along with relevant congresses (2017-2020). Results: Of 123 epidemiologic studies selected for data extraction, 24 reported IgAN diagnosis rates ranging from 6.3% to 29.7% among adult and pediatric patients undergoing renal biopsy, with all reported US rates <15%. No US studies reported IgAN prevalence. A meta-analysis of US studies calculated an annual incidence of 1.29/100 000 people, translating to an annual US incidence of 4236 adults and children. Relative to Europe, the United States had more patients diagnosed with IgAN in later chronic kidney disease stages. US rates of transition to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) ranged from 12.5% to 23% during 3-3.9 years of observation, rising to 53% during 19 years of observation. Across 8 studies reporting HRQoL, pain and fatigue were the most reported symptoms, and patients consistently ranked kidney function and mortality as the most important treatment outcomes. Patients with glomerulopathy reported worse mental health than healthy controls or hemodialysis patients; proteinuria was significantly associated with poorer HRQoL and depression. Conclusion: While economic evidence in IgAN remains sparse, management of ESRD is a major cost driver. IgAN is a rare disease where disease progression causes increasing patient burden, underscoring the need for therapies that prevent kidney function decline and HRQoL deterioration while reducing mortality.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> The aim of this study was to review the literature about the relationship between gingivitis and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). <strong>Material and methods:</strong> Relevant databases were searched for articles in English, which had been published from October 1990 to February 2014. Two independent examiners selected relevant papers, by initially assessing the abstracts and subsequently the full-text articles. Selected studies were grouped based on clinical and OHRQoL instruments and submitted to qualitative analyses. <strong>Results:</strong> Out of 184 references, twelve were eligible for synthesis. All studies were cross-sectional and reported data from the following five different countries: Chile (n=2), India (n=1), Brazil (n=3), Thailand (n=5) and Sudan (n=1). The number and age of subjects included ranged from 53 to 9133 and from eight to 106 years, respectively. The following six OHRQoL instruments were used: Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), OHIP-14, Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ), Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP), Child-OIDP and Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). The different methods to evaluate the presence of gingivitis were: necrotizing ulcerative gingival lesions (n=2), Gingival Index (n=2), Community Periodontal Index (n=7) and gingival bleeding after tooth brushing (n=1). <strong>Conclusion:</strong> This literature review suggests that gingivitis is associated with impairment of OHRQoL. </p>
