Whole-body vibration exercise (WBVE), a nonimpact, viable and safe type of exercise, has been reported to be useful in the physical rehabilitation of obesity. Aim of the study was to compare the acute effects of WBVE with a session of walking and running (AER) on cardiovascular, neuromotor and musculoskeletal parameters in obese subjects. Sixteen adult obese subjects performed 3 tests (WBVE at 30 and 45 Hz, AER) randomly in different days. An increase in heart rate was recorded after AER and 45 Hz WBVE (p < 0.001), while only AER increased systolic ( p = 0.003) and diastolic blood pressure ( p = 0.004) and ratings of perceived exertion ( p < 0.001). All 3 exercises determined lactate increase [AER p < 0.001, 45 Hz ( p = 0.04), 30 Hz ( p = 0.03) WBVE] and sit-and-reach (AER p = 0.002, 45 and 30 Hz WBVE p < 0.001) and fingertip-to-floor improvements (AER p = 0.003, 30 and 45 Hz WBVE p < 0.001), while only 30 Hz WBVE determined improvement in stair climbing test ( p < 0.05). Considering the lack of effects of 30 Hz WBVE on the cardiovascular system and fatigue and its positive effect on flexibility and muscle power, this procedure can be considered an appropriate exercise protocol for the obese population.

Musculoskeletal and neuromotor fitness (MSMF) is reduced in obesity. Physical exercise (including whole-body vibration exercise [WBVE]) is reported to improve components related to MSMF. The aim of the study is to evaluate the acute effects of WBVE and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), alone and in combination, on the cardiorespiratory and MSMF in obese adolescents. Eight obese adolescents performed 3 tests (WBVE, MVC, and MVC + WBVE) in different days and randomly. The outcome measures were diastolic blood pressure (DBP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), handgrip strength (HS), one-leg standing balance (OLSB) test, sit-and-reach (SR) test, stair climbing test (time: T SCT and power: P SCT), and sit-to-stand test (time: T STSand power: P STS). No significant changes were observed in SBP, DBP, MAP, and SpO2 after the 3 tests, only an HR increase being observed after MVC + WBVE ( P < .01) and MVC alone ( P < .05). No significant differences were found in HS, OLSB, T STS, and P STS after the 3 different sessions. An increase in SR was found after MVC + WBVE, MVC, and WBVE ( P < .01, P < .05, and P < .01, respectively), while a decrease in T SCT ( P < .01) and an increase in P SCT were observed only after WBVE ( P < .01). Taking into account the positive WBVE effects on cardiorespiratory and MSMF, WBVE might represent a nonimpact, viable, and safe exercise suitable for obese patients, which need MSMF improvement without overloading joints.

Introduction: Among chronic diseases, knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a joint disease that causes important progressive alterations in the articular and periarticular structures, including synovial inflammation. Exercise has been suggested as an intervention to KOA individuals, and studies suggest that whole-body vibration (WBV) exercise decreases pain levels and favours the functionality of KOA individuals. Objective: The aim of the present study is to analyze the acute effects of WBV exercise on pain levels, functionality (Timed Up and Go (TUG test), anterior trunk flexion (ATF)), and rating of exertion of elderly obese KOA individuals. Methods: Thirty-seven individuals with KOA were allocated to a WBV exercise group (WBVEG), n = 19 (15 females/4 males), and a control group (CG), n = 18 (15 females/3 males). WBVEG performed one session of WBV exercise (11 min, using 5 Hz, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mm, 0.12, 0.25, and 0.37 g). Three bouts were performed (working time of 3 min and rest time of 1 min) using a side-alternating vibrating platform (VP). The same position was used in CG; however, the VP was turned off and there was equipment coupled to the VP that emitted a sound like the vibrations. The pain level was evaluated using a visual analog scale (VAS). Functionality was evaluated with a TUG test and ATF. The rating of subjectively perceived exertion was measured with the category ratio CR-10 (BORG Scale CR-10), Results: A reduction of pain levels in WBVEG after the intervention (p = 0.001) and intergroups (p = 0.041) was found. A decrease of TUG test time in both groups (p = 0.001) and intergroups (p = 0.045) was found, while no statistical changes were observed in the Borg Scale score. Significant improvements of flexibility in both groups (p = 0.001) and intergroups (p = 0.043) were found. Conclusion: One session of WBV exercise can lead to important improvements in individuals with KOA, possibly triggered by physiological responses. However, more studies are needed, in this clinical context, to confirm these results.

Vibrations produced in oscillating/vibratory platform generate whole body vibration (WBV) exercises, which are important in sports, as well as in treating diseases, promoting rehabilitation, and improving the quality of life. WBV exercises relevantly increase the muscle strength, muscle power, and the bone mineral density, as well as improving the postural control, the balance, and the gait. An important number of publications are found in the PubMed database with the keyword “flexibility” and eight of the analyzed papers involving WBV and flexibility reached a level of evidence II. The biggest distance between the third finger of the hand to the floor (DBTFF) of a patient with metabolic syndrome (MS) was found before the first session and was considered to be 100%. The percentages to the other measurements in the different sessions were determined to be related to the 100%. It is possible to see an immediate improvement after each session with a decrease of the %DBTFF. As the presence of MS is associated with poorer physical performance, a simple and safe protocol using WBV exercises promoted an improvement of the flexibility in a patient with MS.

The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of whole-body vibration exercises (WBVE) in different positions on muscular activity of flexor digitorum superficialis (FD), wrist extensor (ED), and handgrip strength (HG) of healthy men. Fifteen participants have performed 5 test sets each one consisting of HG strength measurement and 1-minute WBVE intervention (frequency: 50 Hz, amplitude: 1.53 mm, synchronous tri-planar oscillating/vibratory platform), that could be control (no exposition to vibration), squat (30 seconds of rest and 30 seconds of WBVE in squat position), or push-up (30 seconds of rest, and 30 seconds of WBVE in push-up position). After testing, participants had 2 minutes of rest and then were encouraged to keep themselves on a pull-up bar for 30 seconds. During all procedures, muscular activity of FD and ED was measured by surface electromyography (EMG). Statistical analysis has revealed that the EMG measured in the FD during the static pull-up bar exercise after SQUAT condition was significantly higher ( P = .004) than the CONTROL and PUSH-UP conditions. Whole-body vibration exercises in squat position increase acutely muscle activation of the FD during isometric exercises of longer duration, while muscle activation of ED and HG strength are not affected by WBVE.
