Introduction: To further understand the effects of L-arginine on both its ability to enhance lactate clearance and increase overall blood flow before, during, and after exhaustive anaerobic exercise. Methods:  Twelve healthy male subjects between the ages of 18-25 first completed an initial visit where baseline data was recorded. Subjects completed three additional visits, in which they ingested either a placebo, two-gram or four-gram dose of L-arginine. Blood flow (BF) and lactate were recorded before ingestion of the treatment, 5 and 15-minutes post-ingestion prior to performing a push-up test to volitional fatigue.  Immediately following the push-up test, BF and lactate were assessed and again 15-minutes post exercise. Results: Blood lactate did not differ across condition (p=0.569).  Lactate clearance was not influenced by L-arginine when analyzing the Area Under Curve.  Blood flow increased with ingestion of the four-gram dose while at rest (the 15-minute mark).  Blood flow was also enhanced in the four-gram dose immediately after exercise at the 25-minute mark.  Conclusions: The data suggests that a four-gram dose of L-arginine plays a more significant role in blood flow than the clearance of lactate after exercise compared to a two-gram dose or placebo.

Abstract Background To compare the effect of alternate part-time patching and pencil push-up training on control ability in patients with intermittent exotropia. Methods Patients (3-7 years of age) with previously untreated intermittent exotropia were randomly assigned to receive alternate part-time patching, pencil push-up training or observation. Control ability was assessed using the Office Control Score. Stereoacuity at 40cm was evaluated with Titmus. Results were compared after 12-weeks follow-up. Results Ninety-two patients (28 in patching, 30 in pencil push-up and 34 in observation group) completed baseline and 12-week follow-up assessments. On the basis of 6-point scale, the mean deviation control was significantly better in patching and pencil push-up group after 12 weeks at distance (P=0.002 and 0.026, respectively). Furthermore, there was greater control changes in patching and pencil push-up groups in comparison with observation group from baseline to 12 weeks (P༜0.001;P=0.003, respectively). After 12 weeks of treatment, stereoacuity and stereoacuity changes were not significantly different between either of the intervention group and control group (P=0.140 and 0.393, respectively). Conclusions Based on the common office control scales, alternate part-time patching and pencil push-up training were effective treatment strategies for intermittent exotropia.

Chronological age is used as a basis for determining and comparing the motor skill levels of football players. However, it is known that there are early maturing and late maturing players in the same age group. The aim of this study is to compare the motor skill levels of football players in the same age group by bio-banding and to investigate the importance of bio-banding on motor skill levels. 81 male football players between the ages of 12-15 participated in the study voluntarily. Gross motor skills of the football players participating in the study were determined with Deutscher Motoric Test (DMT 6-18), which consists of 8 tests, namely, (DMT20m sprint, DMTside jump, DMTflexibility, DMT standing long jump, DMT sit-up, DMTbalance, DMT push-up, DMT6 min running). Bio-banding was used to determine the maturity level of football players. As a result of the study, it was determined that there are football players with different maturity levels in the same chronological age grouping. There was no difference in the comparison of sprint, side jump, flexibility, push-up variables between groups according to bio-banding. There was a significant difference in the comparison of balance, sit-up, standing jump and running variables between groups according to bio-banding. It was determined that it was in favor of prepubertal in the sit-up variable, and in favor of pubertal in the balance and sit-up, running and standing jump variables. As a result, it has been determined that there are football players with different maturation levels in the same age group in the bio-bandinged football players, and this situation affects the motor skill levels. It is recommended to use bio-grouping in addition to chronological age when determining the motor skill levels of athletes in all team sports, especially football players. Extended English summary is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file.

Objective. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes progressive changes in the musculoskeletal system compromising neuromuscular control especially in the hands. Whole-body vibration (WBV) could be an alternative for the rehabilitation in this population. This study investigated the immediate effect of WBV while in the modified push-up position on neural ratio (NR) in a single session during handgrip strength (HS) in women with stable RA. Methods. Twenty-one women with RA (diagnosis of disease: ±8 years, erythrocyte sedimentation rate: ±24.8, age: 54± 11 years, BMI: 28 ± 4   kg ·m-2) received three experimental interventions for five minutes in a randomized and balanced cross-over order: (1) control—seated with hands at rest, (2) sham—push-up position with hands on the vibration platform that remained disconnected, and (3) vibration—push-up position with hands on the vibration platform turned on (45 Hz, 2 mm, 159.73 m·s-2). At the baseline and immediately after the three experimental interventions, the HS, the electromyographic records (EMGrms), and range of motion (ROM) of the dominant hand were measured. The NR, i.e., the ratio between EMGrms of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle and HS, was also determined. The lower NR represented the greater neuromuscular efficiency (NE). Results. The NR was similar at baseline in the three experimental interventions. Despite the nonsignificance of within-interventions ( p = 0.0611 ) and interaction effect ( p = 0.1907 ), WBV exercise reduced the NR compared with the sham and control ( p = 0.0003 , F = 8.86 , η 2 = 0.85 , power = 1.00 ). Conclusion. Acute WBV exercise under the hands promotes neuromuscular modifications during the handgrip of women with stable RA. Thus, acute WBV exercise may be used as a preparatory exercise for the rehabilitation of the hands in this population. This trial is registered with trial registration 2.544.850 (ReBEC-RBR-2n932c).

Selective serratus anterior (SA) strengthening without compensatory movement of the shoulder stabilizers is essential for shoulder stability and functional movement without causing shoulder injury and dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to compare electromyographic (EMG) activity between the SA, upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT), and pectoralis major (PM) during the knee push-up plus (KPUP) and modified Vojta’s 3-point support (MV3PS) exercises. Scapular stabilizer muscle activity (UT, LT, SA, and PM) was investigated during the KPUP and MV3PS exercises in 40 healthy adults (19 males, 21 females) using surface EMG. Muscle activity of the SA was significantly higher during the MV3PS exercise than during the KPUP (p < 0.05). However, muscle activity in the PM was significantly lower during the MV3PS exercise (p < 0.05). In addition, the LT and UT showed less muscle activity during the MV3PS exercise, although the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that the MV3PS exercise better activates the SA than KPUP.

This autoethnographic piece highlights the tensions inherent in my experiences as a second-generation immigrant of Jamaican descent. I draw on my experiences to address how my positionalities as Black, immigrant, and woman push up against the politics of U.S. academic institutions. Specifically, I explore (a) the ways in which I experienced othering in educational institutions as a transnational Black girl/woman and how those experiences informed my career path, (b) how I have navigated tensions related to my minoritized identities as a university professor, and (c) ways that I attempt to resist my displacement through my presence and pedagogy.

BACKGROUND Mobile health apps that promote physical activity are being developed at a rapid rate. App-based interventions have the potential for wide reach and therefore, may be a useful tool in up-scaling physical activity interventions. In larger scale interventions, face-to-face assessments are less cost effective, and researchers often rely on surveys or built-in activity trackers to assess ongoing efficacy/effectiveness of outcomes. While there are valid means of assessing aerobic activity via smartphone apps, there is limited evidence of valid muscular fitness assessments that can be self-administered within mHealth. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the concurrent validity of upper and lower body muscular fitness that have been independently assessed by participants via the ecofit app, and face-to-face assessments conducted by a trained researcher. METHODS This study compared baseline data from the ecofit two-armed randomised controlled trial and self-assessed data collected via the ecofit smartphone app. As part of baseline assessment in a larger community-based physical activity intervention ‘ecofit’, participants undertook the validated 90-degree push-up and the 60-second sit-to-stand test face-to-face with a trained researcher. Those allocated to the intervention group received access to the ecofit app and were instructed to complete the self-assessed fitness tests within 14-days of receiving access to the app. To assess the concurrent validity, the self-assessed push-up and sit-to-stand tests were correlated using Spearman’s correlation coefficient against the research-assessed results. Bland-Altman plots were also used to allow visualisation of the differences between the self- and research-assessed tests. RESULTS Fifty-four participants completed at least one of the two muscular fitness self-assessments within 14-days of receiving the app, of these 24.1% and 100% completed the push-up and the sit-to-stand test respectively. The results found a strong significant correlation for the push-up test (0.83, p <.001) and a moderate significant correlation for the sit-to-stand test (0.63, p <.001). CONCLUSIONS This study provides support for the concurrent validity of self-reported upper and lower body muscular fitness assessments (i.e., the push-up and sit-to-stand tests) in mHealth. While these tests may be a feasible option for large scale physical activity interventions, more research is needed to determine the generalisability of these results. CLINICALTRIAL The ecofit trial is registered with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry (ANZCTR): ACTRN12619000868189.
