Predicting change-of-direction performance in elite young badminton players: A multiple regression analysis on acceleration- and deceleration-related qualities

The aim of this study was to examine the interrelationships between direct (sprint and change-of-direction [COD] velocities) and indirect measures (COD-deficit [CODD], deceleration deficit [DD], and sprint momentum) of speed-related performances in young badminton players. Thirty young male badminton players (age: 16.8 ± 1.4 years; body-mass: 61.5 ± 7.9 kg; height: 170 ± 5.8 cm) performed a 20-m sprint followed by 505 COD tests, on the same day. A Pearson product moment test was applied to determine the relationships among variables. A multiple regression analysis was used to verify whether the combination of CODD and DD increased the capacity to predict COD performance. Large and significant relationships were observed between COD and linear sprint velocity and sprint momentum ( r ranging from 0.62 to 0.84; P < 0.05). COD velocity revealed a moderate significant ( r  = −0.38) and a small non-significant ( r  = 0.29) relationship with CODD and DD, respectively. The multiple regression model combining CODD and DD explained 44% of the variance in COD performance. In summary, young badminton players who sprint faster are equally faster in COD manoeuvres but present higher levels of CODD and DD. Coaches should be aware that faster badminton players may exhibit greater magnitudes of CODD-DD, thus requiring specific interventions to optimize the transition between high deceleration and (re) acceleration phases.

Today, efforts are underway in a number of areas to conserve the environment and protect natural resource. In the construction industry, many researchers have studied the development of new concrete using recycled aggregate (RA). This research proposes a multiple regression model (MRM) for predicting the compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The compressive strength data of 85 specimens of RAC strengths were used for constructing and evaluating the prediction model. The average error rate of the constructed MRM evaluation is 7.18 percent. This result will be useful for predicting the compressive strength of RAC using multiple regression analysis.

In this study, daily snowmelt was predicted using observed meteorological data and multiple regression analysis. Five observation stations (located in Daegwallyeong, Gwangju, Seosan, Mokpo, and Jeonju) were selected to analyze fresh snow depth from 2000 to 2010. The dependent variable used in the multiple regression analysis was daily snowmelt depth, and the independent variables were fresh snow depth, diurnal temperature range, temperature interception, diurnal humidity range, humidity intercept, and solar radiation. Seventy percent of the total observed data was used to develop a multiple regression model and the regression model was verified using the 30% of remaining data. The adjusted R-squared and Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSE) were used to examine the developed regression model. As a result, the adjusted R-squared was higher than 0.769 (except Daegwallyeong); thus the developed model represented well the daily snowmelt depth. Even Jeonju had an adjusted R-squared of 0.869. Also, the RMSE in all of the five stations was lower than 2.5 cm. The lowest value in Seosan was 1.7 cm. From the two types of verification, the developed multiple regression model was judged to be suitable to predict the daily snowmelt depth. However, multicollinearity should be explained, as rapid increases in temperature and sustained high temperature could not be reflected in the model. Therefore, if the limitations were resolved in further research, the model could be used to predict the amount of daily snowmelt depth more reliably.

In this paper, the author investigates the factors that affect the adoption of e-government in Malaysia. Variables like perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, compatibility, trust and demographic profiles of users are included in this research. Data was collected from 418 respondents, and multiple regression analysis is employed to test the research model. The results show that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, compatibility, trust and age have significant relationships with e-government adoption. The results from this study are useful for Malaysian government in formulating appropriate strategies to improve the adoption of e-government applications in Malaysia.

Generally, manufacturing capability is the important factor in running and developing business. Hence, this research is aimed to identifying the relationships of critical factors and make sure the companies can survive in the northern region of Malaysia. Those identified factors are training and manufacturing capabilities. Through the email survey, a total of 89 companies representing electrical and electronic industries had responded. The hypotheses involved were tested using correlation and regression techniques. The results of the study support all the hypotheses. The multiple regression analysis indicates that there are significant relationships among the factors on each criterion to manufacturing capabilities. While hierarchical multiple regression analysis was carried out to test the role of moderating in the relationship between independent variables with dependent variables. It is believed that results of this study will be beneficial for shareholders and directors of companies to apply these manufacturing capabilities.

The purpose of this study was to establish floating cephalometric norms for the description of the individual skeletal pattern in Czech adults. Floating norms provide a method of analysis that uses the variability of the associations among suitable cephalometric measures, on the basis of the regression model combining both sagittal and vertical skeletal parameters. Harmony box is a simple and useful tool for diagnostics of orthodontic anomalies according to individual cephalometric norms. 118 subjects, 53 male and 65 female, from Czech population were selected. The method of multiple regression analysis was used to determine interdependence among five cephalometric variables of the sample. Linear regression equations with corresponding r2 and standard error of the estimate (SE) were then illustrated as the harmony box. The results construct a harmony box based on correlated cephalometric variables. The multiple regression analysis of the data is graphically illustrated as a harmony schema which divides harmony box in three zones according to the type of the face – prognathic, orthognathic and retrognathic. The cephalometric floating norms describing the individual craniofacial pattern among Czech adults were established based on five correlated variables in the form of a harmony box.

AbstractPeople with tinnitus and/or hyperacusis often experience insomnia. However, it is unclear what factors are most strongly associated with insomnia.To explore factors related to insomnia in patients with tinnitus and/or hyperacusis.This was a retrospective study using multiple-regression analysis.Data were assessed for 444 consecutive patients who sought help concerning their tinnitus and/or hyperacusis from a specialist audiology center in the UK National Health Service. The average age of the patients was 54 years (standard deviation = 15 years).The results of audiological tests and self-report questionnaires were gathered retrospectively from the records of the patients. Multiple-regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between insomnia and other variables.Sixty-nine percent of patients with tinnitus experienced some form of insomnia as measured via the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). A multiple-regression model showed that ISI scores were significantly associated with depression scores measured via the depression subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) (regression coefficient [b] = 0.44, p < 0.001), tinnitus annoyance measured via the visual analog scale (VAS) (b = 0.49, p = 0.001), anxiety measured via the anxiety subscale of the HADS (b = 0.21, p = 0.012), and tinnitus handicap measured via the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (b = 0.07, p < 0.001). The model explained 45% of the variance in ISI scores. VAS scores for tinnitus loudness, hyperacusis-related measures, hearing thresholds, age, and gender were not significantly related to insomnia.The prevalence of insomnia in patients with tinnitus is high. Both tinnitus-related factors and psychological factors are related to the severity of insomnia. Hyperacusis is not significantly associated with insomnia.

Predaceous insect encounter rate was measured in 21 southeast Nebraska alfalfa fields through weekly sweep net sampling during 2002–03. The most frequently encountered predaceous insect families were Coccinellidae (Coleoptera), Nabidae (Hemiptera), and Chrysopidae (Neuroptera). The study used multiple regression analysis to examine the effect of aphid abundance and the surrounding vegetative patch composition on predaceous insect abundance. In 2002, Hippodamia parenthesis Say was encountered more frequently in fields with lower aphid abundances, and Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville, Coccinella septem-punctata L., and Nabis americoferus Carayon were encountered more frequently in fields with higher aphid abundances. In 2003, Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer was encountered more frequently in fields with higher aphid abundance. The remaining two species of coccinellids and Chryoperla spp. did not exhibit significant correlations with aphid abundance in either year. It was determined that in 2002, H. parenthesis was encountered more frequently in alfalfa surrounded by a higher percentage of unfarmed land, and C. maculata, C. septempunctata, N. americoferus, and Chrysoperla spp. were encountered more frequently in alfalfa surrounded by a higher percentage of farmed land. In 2003, N. americoferus was again encountered more frequently in alfalfa fields surrounded by a higher percentage of farmed land. The remaining three coccinellid species collected did not exhibit significant relationships between vegetative patch composition and encounter rate in either year.

Little research has concerned criterion-related validity of heterosocial self-report inventories. 82 undergraduate men responded to the Survey of Heterosocial Interactions, Situation Questionnaire, and Dating and Assertion Questionnaire and also had heterosocial skillfulness rated during an analog interaction. Scores on the interaction survey correlated the highest ( r = .43) with ratings of global skill, and a four-variable regression model accounted for 31% of the ratings' variance. The significant relationships between these inventories and ratings of skill provide some evidence for criterion-related validity of these measures.
