This commentary reflects upon my experiences modelling epidemics from a geographical perspective. In particular, I consider different approaches to the modelling of epidemics and other forms of data analysis relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic within a geographical context, especially with respect to the need for ‘just in time’ policy-relevant research.

Abstract In microbiome and genomic studies, the regression of compositional data has been a crucial tool for identifying microbial taxa or genes that are associated with clinical phenotypes. To account for the variation in sequencing depth, the classic log-contrast model is often used where read counts are normalized into compositions. However, zero read counts and the randomness in covariates remain critical issues. In this article, we introduce a surprisingly simple, interpretable, and efficient method for the estimation of compositional data regression through the lens of a novel high-dimensional log-error-in-variable regression model. The proposed method provides both corrections on sequencing data with possible overdispersion and simultaneously avoids any subjective imputation of zero read counts. We provide theoretical justifications with matching upper and lower bounds for the estimation error. The merit of the procedure is illustrated through real data analysis and simulation studies.

This chapter identifies the critical issues that must be addressed to accelerate the digital transition in the chartering market. The maritime industry is one of the pillars of global trade, where change is a constant. Again, shipping is at the cusp of a new era—one driven by data. The authors review the state-of-the-art technology that is useful to automate chartering processes. · The Fourth Industrial Revolution (or Industry 4.0) starts to change the bulk shipping markets leveraging the data flow between industrial processes in the physical and virtual world. · The internet of things accelerates data flow from things in the real world to the virtual world and enables us to control processes in real-time. Machine-to-machine communication, together with artificial intelligence, creates autonomous systems in many areas of production and logistics. Based on the gathered elements, eShip's case study was analyzed, and future steps have been defined for the data analysis in the shipping industry.

Abstract The Aral Sea crisis has gained global notoriety as a human-induced environmental disaster. This paper contextualizes this crisis within a broad geographical framework. Three interpretations of a single photographic image emblematic of the desiccation of the Aral Sea are related to general foci within the academic discipline of geography. These interpretations serve to guide a framing of the Aral Sea crisis within a geographical context. This is presented as a geographical problem, incorporating elements and processes salient to physical geography, human geography, and human-environment interaction. With ecological and societal sustainability in the immediate Aral Sea region still a pressing concern, geographers are well positioned to contribute relevant, research-driven insights.

Internet of Things (IOT) system often consists of thousands of constrained connected devices. Resource-constrained devices one of critical issues in a low- power and lossy network LLNs. RPL is IPv6 routing protocol. It’s designed by IETF to be simple and inter-operable networking protocol to overcome these resource limitations. The RPL carries out Objective Functions (OFs) in the aim of finding the best path. The OFs chooses the best parent nodes aiming to build the route and optimize it. The metrics used to build the OF must be selected in an effective and accurate manner for finding the optimal path and meets all constraints. A survey about node metrics which can be utilized in OFs of RPL is presented, and node metrics calculations are explained then discussed thoroughly. The researcher displays the most relevant research efforts regarding the RPL OFs existing in literature.

In August 2017, there were 7.4 million educated unemployed including vocational graduates. Why are there so many educated unemployed. Are there no vocational high school (SMK) graduates who can become entrepreneurs? The Vocational High School is the right place to develop entrepreneurship education. This study aims to determine the extent of the influence of the Business Center that can increase vocational entrepreneurship readiness. This research was conducted through a literature review and relevant research results and continued through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data analysis technique used is descriptive-qualitative analysis technique. The study found that the Business Center can increase the entrepreneurial readiness of vocational students, which means that increasing the entrepreneurial readiness of vocational students can be done through improving skills through the Business Center.
