Professional school counselors face the challenge of delivering guidance and counseling services to students while connecting to the educational mission of schools. This article is a summary and evaluation of a small group counseling program that targets academic issues while addressing personal/social issues with elementary-aged children. Results suggest that integrating academic interventions and group counseling improved students’ behavior related to school achievement. Implications for school counselors and application of the ASCA National Model® are briefly discussed.

The study in this article employed a multidimensional (behavioral, emotional, and cognitive) construct of school engagement to examine its relationship to school achievement in mathematics across the five major racial groups. The sample included 115 American Indians, 486 Asians, 1, 551 Blacks, 1, 682 Latinos, and 7, 554 Whites who participated in the Educational Longitudinal Study (2002-2004). Data were analyzed using a multiple regression analysis for each of the five racial groups. Behavioral and cognitive engagement accounted for much more of the variance in math achievement scores than did emotional engagement. Ways in which professional school counselors can promote these kinds of engagement are discussed.

A clinical simulation technique was used to investigate how future school principals view the roles of professional school counselors, particularly as those responsibilities are represented in the ASCA National Model®. The 244 respondents were principals-in-training (i.e., graduate students) officially enrolled in educational administration programs at member institutions of the University Council for Educational Administration. These principals-in-training were able to differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate roles of professional school counselors, and the results generally were independent of their demographic characteristics.

The study in this article provided principals with different types of information about professional school counseling and examined the impact on their perceptions. Results demonstrated that information about the ASCA National Model® influenced principals’ perceptions of the amount of time counselors should allocate to delivery of the guidance curriculum, system support, and responsive services, as well as ratings of the importance of performing inappropriate tasks in meeting the education mission of the school.

This study evaluated the impact of a small group counseling intervention designed for students who underachieve. The results of the study demonstrated significant improvement for ninth- and tenth-grade underachieving students in the areas of organizational skills, time management, and motivation. The author discusses implications and recommendations for school counselors working with underachieving students.

To introduce restorative practices (RP) to the school counseling literature, the authors explicate the hand in glove fit between the RP model for schools and school counselor identity and scope of practice. Drawing from the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) National Model, ASCA’s Ethical Standards for School Counselors, multitiered systems of support (MTSS), and the school counseling literature, the authors make the case for the profession of school counseling to take up RP and integrate the model into school counseling research, theory, and practice.

School counselors are under increasing pressure to evaluate their programs in a manner consistent with teachers and other educators. A small-group counseling intervention was used by a school counselor as part of a three-level program planning initiative that illustrated best research practices to evaluate program outcomes. Forty-nine third-grade students with social skills deficits participated in a 10-week social skills intervention. Results indicated that children participating in the intervention experienced reduced loneliness and social anxiety as well as improved academic achievement. Implications for school counselors conducting evaluations in a practical and time-efficient manner are discussed.

ABSTRAK Remaja merupakan fase penting dalam masa perkembangan terutama mengenai kemampuan dalam mengambil keputusan-keputusan pilihan karir masa depannya. Keputusan karir akan mudah dicapai apabila peserta didik memiliki kematangan karir yang baik. Konseling kelompok merupakan layanan yang dapat membantu peserta didik mengatasi hambatan dalam kematangan karir. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kajian pustaka yang didukung oleh data-data dari beberapa artikel, buku-buku sumber, dan dokumen pendukung lainnya. Guru bimbingan dan konseling dapat menerapkan layanan konseling kelompok untuk mengatasi masalah-masalah karir. Salah satu pendekatan yang dapat digunakan dalam rangka membantu kematangan karir peserta didik dalam konseling kelompok adalah pendekatan yang berfokus untuk mengubah pikiran negative dan keyakinan maladaptive (CBT) yang dimiliki oleh peserta didik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa layanan konseling kelompok dengan pendekatan Cognitive Behavior Theraphy (CBT) secara efektif dapat membantu dalam mengatasi permasalahan karir peserta didik. Kata Kunci: kematangan karir, konseling kelompok, terapi perilaku kognitif ABSTRACT Teenage is an important phase in the developmental period, especially regarding the ability to make decisions about his future career choices. Career decisions will be easily achieved if students have good career maturity. Group counseling is a service that can help students overcome obstacles in career maturity. The research method used is a literature review that is supported by data from several articles, source books, and other supporting documents. Guidance and counseling teachers can apply group counseling services to overcome career problems. One approach that can be used in order to help the career maturity of students in group counseling is an approach that focuses on changing negative thoughts and maladaptive beliefs (CBT) that are owned by students. The results of the study showed that group counseling services with the Cognitive Behavior Theraphy (CBT) approach can be effectively help in solving the career problems of students.
