Studies were carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Seethampeta in Andhra Pradesh during the kharif season for three consecutive years starting from 2017 to 2019 on the population dynamics of insect pests occurring in paddy and also to assess the influence of weather parameters on insect pests. The insect pests observed in the light trap catches were, Yellow stem borer, Gall midge, Leaf folder, Green leafhopper, Plant hopper (BPH/WBPH) and Grasshoppers. The light trap catches of rice insect pests were recorded at weekly interval during 32nd Standard Meteorological Week (SMW) to 52nd Standard Meteorological Week (SMW) and the data were correlated with the weather parameters. The results revealed that more number of adults of Yellow stem borer were noticed during the year 2019 from 45th to 48th SMW and the correlation studies revealed that that maximum temperature, minimum and maximum relative humidities had significant positive influence and regression value of R2 (743, 638 and 726 during 2017, 2018 & 2019). The population of gall midge was negligible during the year 2017 and 2018. Whereas, in 2019 peak was notice during 38th SMW (15 No’s) maximum relative humidity has positive relation with increase in the gall midge population. Leaf folder adults were trapped more in the light traps during the year 2019 with peak catches of 11.00 No’s on 42nd SMW and were positively correlated with maximum temperature, minimum and maximum relative humidities. Similarly, leafhopper, brown leaf hopper, grass hoppers were positively correlated with the relative humidity.

A study on the effect of weather parameters on the the population dynamics of Spodoptera litura (S.litura) in soybean and cotton during kharif season using six years pest data (pheromone trap catches) at Niphad and Rahuri in Maharashtra showed that rainfall two weeks prior, Tmax and Tmin during the week of incidence signifiantly contributed towards the occurrence of S.litura in soybean. Maximum temperature and morning humidity during the week and one week prior were found to be favourable for the incidence of S. litura in cotton. Temperature (maximum: 26-27°C & minimum: 21-22°C), morning relative humidity (above 90%) and rainfall during one week prior were found to be congenial weather parameters for the outbreak of the pest in soybean. Similarly, maximum temperature around 32-33°C, minimum temperature around 22-23°C, morning relative humidity around 90 per cent, sunshine hours about 4 hrs day-1 and rainfall during the previous 2 weeks favoured heavy incidence of S.litura in cotton crop during flowering to boll formation stages. It is also shown how the incidence of S.litura in soybean and cotton can be predicted well in advance using the observed relationship of the pest with weather parameters as well as weather forecast.

A study was carried out to find out the effect of various weather parameters on the occurrence of major defoliators in soybean crop. Semilooper larval population was recorded late July/early August and their peak activity observed during 33-34, 33-36 and 37-39 standard weeks, in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. Among the weather factors, morning relative humidity showed significant (r=0.954) and positively, highly influence on the larval population per mrl whereas evening humidity (r=-0.644) and sunshine hrs (r=-0.367) negatively and significantly influence the larval population per mrl. The various weather parameters significantly caused 92 per cent variations in larval population per mrl. The moth catches of Spodoptera litura increased from late-August to late-September and this trend was almost similar in different kharif seasons observed. Larval population of S. litura positively correlated with pheromone trap catches during 2014.

The flight activity of aphid pests of wheat potato lettuce and squash is currently monitored in New Zealand using 75 m suction traps However there has been little research comparing aphid suction trap catches with crop infestation levels The relationship between the average number of aphids (Rhopalosiphum padi) sampled from wheat plants and the average number of aphids caught in weekly 75 m suction trap samples was examined A significant positive relationship indicated that numbers of aphids caught in suction traps reflected the numbers of aphids infesting wheat fields In another experiment potato aphid flights (mostly Myzus persicae) caught in a 75 m suction trap were compared with a nearby windvane trap Aphid numbers in both traps reflected similar trends However the suction trap caught approximately 10 times more aphids than the windvane trap Thus 75 m suction traps provide a useful tool for assessing aphid infestation levels in crops

The flight activities of adult sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, and leafhoppers were monitored by plastic cup traps at Boğalı, Taşçı, Hacıali, Doğankent and Balcalı in the Çukurova Plain, Turkey, in 2001 and 2003. Activity of B. tabaci, expressed as numbers of adults caught in traps, was low from May to early July in both years. Numbers of B. tabaci caught at Tasçı were higher than at Boğalı from 10 July and 21 August in 2001. Its numbers were also higher at Doğankent than at Hacıali and Balcalı during August of 2003. The numbers of leafhopper adults caught fluctuated greatly in both years. Numbers remained low until late June, followed by gradual increases in July and August at Boğalı and Taşçı in 2001. In contrast, numbers of adults caught were higher at Hacıali, Doğankent and Balcalı from May through July in 2003, followed by lower catches during the remainder of the season. Daily minimum temperatures in July and August were positively correlated with higher trap catches of both B. tabaci and leafhoppers.

Pregnancy is associated with several physical and psychosocial challenges that influence women’s health and wellbeing. However, prenatal mental health has received little attention. Therefore, this study examined the prevalence and correlates of prenatal depression, anxiety and current suicidal behaviors among pregnant women in the Volta Region of Ghana. Two hundred and fourteen (n = 214) pregnant women recruited from two hospitals responded to the hospital depression and anxiety scale (HADS), the insomnia severity index, and a set of psycho-behavioral, socioenvironmental and demographic characteristic questions. Chi-squared, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were used for data analysis. Prevalence of prenatal depression, anxiety and current suicidal behaviors was 50.5%, 35.5% and 3.3%, respectively. After controlling for other variables, average monthly income, insomnia, non-nutritious food consumption (pica), and body image satisfaction were significantly associated with depression. Marital status, insomnia, lifetime suicidal behavior and partner support were significantly associated with anxiety. Current partner abuse was the only factor significantly associated with current suicidal behavior. The high prevalence rates of anxiety and depression among pregnant women and intimate partner violence remain important maternal health issues in the region. Therefore, brief mental health screening and counseling services should be integrated into prenatal healthcare services.
