Population dynamics of major defoliators (semiloopers and tobacco caterpillar) in soybean crop

A study was carried out to find out the effect of various weather parameters on the occurrence of major defoliators in soybean crop. Semilooper larval population was recorded late July/early August and their peak activity observed during 33-34, 33-36 and 37-39 standard weeks, in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. Among the weather factors, morning relative humidity showed significant (r=0.954) and positively, highly influence on the larval population per mrl whereas evening humidity (r=-0.644) and sunshine hrs (r=-0.367) negatively and significantly influence the larval population per mrl. The various weather parameters significantly caused 92 per cent variations in larval population per mrl. The moth catches of Spodoptera litura increased from late-August to late-September and this trend was almost similar in different kharif seasons observed. Larval population of S. litura positively correlated with pheromone trap catches during 2014.

A study on the effect of weather parameters on the the population dynamics of Spodoptera litura (S.litura) in soybean and cotton during kharif season using six years pest data (pheromone trap catches) at Niphad and Rahuri in Maharashtra showed that rainfall two weeks prior, Tmax and Tmin during the week of incidence signifiantly contributed towards the occurrence of S.litura in soybean. Maximum temperature and morning humidity during the week and one week prior were found to be favourable for the incidence of S. litura in cotton. Temperature (maximum: 26-27°C & minimum: 21-22°C), morning relative humidity (above 90%) and rainfall during one week prior were found to be congenial weather parameters for the outbreak of the pest in soybean. Similarly, maximum temperature around 32-33°C, minimum temperature around 22-23°C, morning relative humidity around 90 per cent, sunshine hours about 4 hrs day-1 and rainfall during the previous 2 weeks favoured heavy incidence of S.litura in cotton crop during flowering to boll formation stages. It is also shown how the incidence of S.litura in soybean and cotton can be predicted well in advance using the observed relationship of the pest with weather parameters as well as weather forecast.

In order to study the influence of weather factors on the abundance and population dynamics of Spodoptera litura F. and Pieris brassicae L. on cabbage, a field experiment was conducted. Larval population of S. litura ranged from 0.56 to 1.57 larvae/plant during 8 January to 12 February 2014 crop season while the highest peak was on 5 February 2014 (1.57 larvae/plant) at 29.5 0C temperature. In case of Pieris brassicae, larval population ranged from 0.58 to1.98 larvae/plant and the highest peak of P. brassicae was also on 5 February. The highest peak was on 5 February 2014 at 96% and 38% relative humidity of both maximum and minimum categories and the highest peak of P. brassicae was on 5 February. There was a strong positive correlation (r = 0.824 and r = 0.920) between population of Spodoptera litura and temperature (maximum and minimum). On the other hand, there was a negative correlation (r = -0.439) between population of S. litura and maximum relative humidity and a strong negative correlation (r = - 0.716) between population of S. litura and minimum relative humidity. The population of Pieris brassicae was positively correlated (r = 0.899 and r = 0.956) with maximum and minimum temperatures. There was a negative correlation (r = -0.443) between population of P. brassicae and maximum relative humidity and a strong negative correlation (r = - 0.645) between population of P. brassicae and minimum relative humidity.SAARC J. The field experiment was carried out at Polasa Farm, Regional agricultural research station Jagtial during the Kharif, 2014-15 and 2015-16. Study about pre dominant lepidopteran insect –pests in soybean crop noticed that the tobacco cut worm, (Spodptera exigua Hubner), green semi looper(Crysodexis acuta Walker), and tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura Fab) along with stemfly, (Melanagromyza obtusa Zehnter) as non lepidopteran pest were noticed at various growth stages of cropgrowth. The peak activity of stem fly (37.84%) was observed during 37th standard week per meter row) for the year 2014 and for the year 2015 to a maximum infestation of 35.70 per cent during 30th std.week. The peak activity of caterpillar pests i.e., S. litura (7.6 larvae per meter row) for the year 2014 was observed during 34th std.week and for the year 2015 (12.4 per meter row during 36th std.week and C. acuta (0.7 larvae per meter row) during 36th std. week for the year 2014 and for the year 2015 (2.20 larvae/mrl on 37th std week. S. exigua (1.6 larvae per meter row) for both the years 2014 and 2015 was observed during 32th std.week Among the natural enemies, one predators namely, spiders (Oxyopes sp. was observed to prey on the insect pests.The biocontrol agent’s one species, lynx spider, Oxyopes sp. population recorded on the crop during Kharif , 2014 ranged from 0.15 to 0.40 /mrl and 0.15 to 0.60/ mrl during Kharif, 2015.

The biodiversity of insects visiting cabbage and population dynamics of diamondback moth was studies on Golden acre variety of cabbage. The experiment was conducted at experimental plot of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, Morabadi, Ranchi, during October to January, 2018-19. During the experiment, Bihar hairy caterpillar, Diamondback moth, Cabbage aphid, Cabbage maggot, Cabbage butterfly, Tobacco caterpillar, Ladybird beetle, Rice bug, Cricket and Spider were noticed. The population of diamondback moth was positively correlated with maximum, minimum, average temperature and maximum relative humidity and negatively correlated with minimum RH, wind speed; rainfall. The highest larval population of was recorded during 1st week of January (1st Standard Meteorological Week, SMW).

Present investigations were carried out during Kharif season of 2013-14 and 2014-15 at the Agricultural Research Farm, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi to monitor the population of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) by using pheromone traps and to start appropriate control measures in time. The maximum numbers of moth catches were recorded during 44th (16.8 pheromone trap-1) and 45th (19.5 pheromone trap-1) standard week in all the modules during Kharif 2013 and 2014. Relationship between pheromone trap catches and egg population was found significant and positively correlated in all modules except M3 during 2013. In the succeeding year 2014, the correlation between pheromone trap catches and egg population was positive and significant only in case of M5. The correlation between pheromone trap catches and larval population was positive in all modules but significant in case of M1 during 2013. In the succeeding year 2014, the correlation between pheromone trap catches and larval population was positive in all modules but significant only in M5.
