The search for environmental preservation and conservation of natural resources gives rise to new concepts and viable technical solutions on the path to sustainable development. In this context, this study’s main objective is to analyse the influence of recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) on the development of pervious concrete, whose use as a floor covering represents an excellent device to mitigate the urban soil sealing phenomena. For this, mechanical and hydraulic tests were carried out, in addition to microstructural analyses and the assessment of its environmental performance. The results obtained were compared to reference studies also involving the incorporation of recycled aggregates. A pilot-scale case study was conducted, involving a parking space lined with pervious concrete moulded “in situ”. In laboratory tests, permeability coefficients and mechanical strengths compatible with the literature and above the normative limit for light traffic were found. The case study demonstrated higher permeability than in the laboratory, but the flexural strength was lower, being indicated only for pedestrian traffic. The environmental assessment showed that the RCA represents a positive contribution to the environmental performance of pervious concrete. Still, attention should be given to the recycled aggregate transport distance between the concrete plant and the RCA treatment plant.

Recycling of bituminous aggregates in cement concrete has been selected for the present study to determine suitability of recycled material in road construction. This will help in achieving economy in road construction as well as saving on environment degradation in term of reduced mining and less pollution. Construction and maintenance of roads and highways involve millions of tonnes of aggregate. Considering the scarcity of fresh aggregate, replacement of part of the fresh aggregate with recycled aggregate is considered in the present study. Construction of the road is quite cost intensive. Material alone cost more than 60% of the total construction cost, out of which aggregate cost component, is approximately 30%. We can use recycled aggregate in place of fresh aggregate in construction of road and provide economy to the project. For making best use of recycled aggregates, it is essential to study the suitability of the same in various pavement components. In the present study recycled aggregate are used in Granular Sub Base (GSB) and Wet Mix Macadam (WMM).

This research investigates the efficiency of using Flax Fibers reinforced bio-sourced polymer by comparison to traditional system based on Carbone Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Polymer in order to confine recycled aggregates concrete. Four concrete formulations have been formulated by incorporating recycled aggregates from demolition waste (0%, 30%, 50% and 100%). An air-entraining agent was added to the formulations to achieve the level of 4% occluded air. The main objective is to discuss and to evaluate the effectiveness of confining them using bio-sourced composite by comparison to traditional ones. To hit this target, the developed approaches are both experimental and analytical. The first part is experimental and aimed to characterize the mechanical behavior of the materials: the composites used in the confining process the unconfined concrete (effect of incorporating recycled aggregates on the overall mechanical characteristics). We establish that bio-sourced composites are efficient in strengthening recycled aggregates concrete especially if they are air-entrained. The second part of this work is dedicated to analytical modeling of mechanical behavior of confined concrete with composite under compression based on Mander’s model. The input parameters of the model were modified to consider the rate of recycled aggregates incorporation. Comparison between experimental results and the modified Mandel’s Model is satisfactory.

The application of failure criteria are difficult partly because they are too various and must be validated by biaxial tests, which are expensive to be achieved. In this work, an analytical modeling based on a software program has been elaborated for application of the most general failure criteria and prediction of successive failure. Finally, the results obtained by this analytical modeling show a good correlation with those carried out by experimental study.
