AbstractClimate change, global energy demand, and greenhouse emissions from energy (formerly CO2 emissions from fuel combustion) have emerged as the most serious threats to humans, particularly in densely populated cities. As a result, there are calls to reconnect with nature and draw inspiration from its mechanisms as well as to use clean renewable energy resources. Thus, this paper presents a biomimicry approach—a strategy for achieving ecological balance—to biofuel using algae in a building facade, and considers a case study building in Giza city as an example of a populated city in Egypt for retrofitting its skin with a nature-inspired solution. Using mathematical calculation, energy load analysis, and interviews with interested specialists, architects, and building occupants about this technology, then compared the performance of the case study commercial building facade with the proposed algae facade for energy generate. The results indicate that electrical energy consumption can be reduced by 45 to 50%, and carbon emissions could be reduced. In addition, other benefits for the building environment and societal acceptance were revealed. The study concluded that using algae as an element of the building skin in densely populated cities as a biomimicry architecture strategy contributes to an innovative environmental approach.

The foremost issues of the twenty-first century are the ever-increasing challenging demand of electrical energy and controlling the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Along with these issues and with limited energy resources, it is imperative to look for non-conventional methods of power generation like from renewable energy resources. Microgrid has emerged as a new field that can meet the energy demand with a special emphasis on good power quality, reliability, and security. A major concern with the use of renewable energy resources is their intermittent nature which makes their integration and operation a challengeable task. Energy storage devices like batteries can be used to overcome the problem of intermittent nature of renewable energy resources. This chapter focusses on different aspects of renewable energy resources in detail. It analyzes the effectiveness of the proposed topology of the microgrid for health clinic load profile with the help of PVSYST software.

Despite of being one of the richest countries in energy resources Pakistan is facing a huge short fall of electrical energy as energy demand is increasing rapidly but increase in generation capability is much slow. Currently Pakistan is using a huge amount of non-renewable energy resources to produce electricity which is not only expensive but also affecting the environment due to by-products of this process. This is a common trend throughout the world to use renewable resources of energy as it is economical and nature friendly. This paper gives an overview of currently used methods for power generation in Pakistan and a gives a brief detail on how and in which areas of the country power generation can be done using renewable resources of energy. Cost of installing the system is also one of the most important factors but will not be discussed here because purpose of this paper is only to help the reader to know about different renewable resources of energy. Numerous types of wind turbines i.e. Bonus 300/33.4, NEG/Micon 1000/60, Vestas 600/42 and Whisper 0.9/2.13 have been statistically analyzed, for the energy they could ideally produce, under the same atmospheric conditions. The coasts of Karachi are proposed to be among the ideal, most suitable sites, for the erection of wind farms, in Pakistan. Wind-Data for the year 2003 (previously acquired through anemometers) is processed in “MATLAB” to implement the “Curve Fitting techniques” adjusting the “k” and “c”, the shape and scale parameters, respectively, of the “Weibull Distribution” so that the refined Wind-Data curves resemble the ones made by the Raw-Data, minus the anomalies. Furthermore, the refined data is then extracted to be populated in the spreadsheets for mathematical/statistical calculations

Stable and sustainable economic development—including that of renewable energy resources (RES)—requires institutional support of an environment that would enable market operations, and support them in case they are ineffective. Innovation brokers, including structured technology transfer networks, play a key role in promoting, disseminating, and liaising between the parties in the RES sector. The aim of the paper is to present the structure of events used to promote RES in Europe by the Enterprise Europe Network in the years 2017–2018; to verify whether the type of promotion instrument used is significantly related to the location of the events organized; to research whether the selection of the supporting partner is determined by the organized event’s geographical location. The analysis is carried out by means of an empirical study of the network of innovation brokers, i.e., the Enterprise Europe Network. Additionally, the available data are analyzed in terms of the type of the partner supporting individual events. It has been shown that there is a significant variation in the structure of the types of events for individual regions of Europe. This could mean that the organizers’ decisions as to the type of events organized in particular regions of Europe are deliberate and in some way adjusted to the region in which they take place.

Biofuels are an important energy source, currently providing about 10% of the world energy demand, including 2% of global electricity generation and the same share of total liquid fuel consumption. Wood fuel in Russia is one of the most affordable and most important type of renewable energy resources. In this paper we study the possible changes in energy potential of Russia's forest resources as a result of changes in the atmosphere and climate. The estimates of the global dioxide concentrations dynamics and mean annual air temperature change over the Russian territory for the period up to 2050 are developed using the MPEI models of the carbon cycle and regional climate. The calculations show that the change of net primary productivity of forests of Russia as a result of the CO2 abundance increase in the atmosphere, as well as of the increase of the air temperature and rainfall will enhance available energy resources of wood fuel by mid-century by more than 9 million tons of coal equivalent (Mtce).
