THE RELATIVE PLACE OF EMPIRICAL AND ANALYTIC METHODS OF GEOPHYSICAL INTERPRETATION

The pioneer in geophysics has, in most cases, used empirical methods on his first jobs in the field. Frequently, such an initial campaign has been successful in that valuable evidence has been obtained as to the position of a new ore‐deposit. Thereupon the method has received recognition so that additional parties have gone into field work; also, analytic methods have then been applied to show why the particular method succeeded in some cases and now far it would be likely to succeed in border‐line problems. After a discussion of the difference between empirical and analytic procedure, the author reviews the history of one geophysical project—the search for iron ore in the Lake Superior region by magnetic methods—describing the empirical efforts and the subsequent analysis. He then suggests that failures on certain other jobs might be less if the analysis be made earlier, and that there will be an economy, if this analysis be made before field work begins.

Male white-rumped munias sing syntactically simpler songs than their domestic counterparts, Bengalese finches. The differences in song structure may reflect differences in natural selection pressures between wild and domestic environments. Deacon (2010) proposed song simplicity of the wild strain could be subject to natural selection. We hypothesized the selection pressure may be species identification. Thus, we compared song variations in relation to ecological factors and dispersal history of white-rumped munias to understand song evolutionary processes. We found geographic variations of song syntactical complexity. The difference of song syntactical complexity did not corresponded to genetic distance, but did to that of the proportion of mixed flocks with sympatric related species. Birds that inhabited the areas with more mixed flocks sang simpler songs. The song complexity might be constrained to intensify distinct conspecific signals from related species. Our field work provided empirical evidence supporting a proposal made by Deacon (2010). Статья посвящена железорудному месторождению, представляющему собой пласт оолитовых (бурожелезняковых) руд железа, который выходит на дневную поверхность на мысе Железный Рог на берегу Таманского полуострова. Мыс имеет протяженность 1,3 км с запада на восток и высоту 55 м над уровнем моря. Склон мыса разбит многочисленными трещинами из-за эрозионного воздействия ветра и морской воды, по которым происходит откалывание оползневых тел. Актуальность работы. Железорудное месторождение на мысе Железный Рог Таманского полуострова известно с конца 19 века, в настоящее время (с 1984 года) ему присвоен статус памятника природы, из-за чего добыча сырья запрещена на всей охраняемой территории, составляющей 19 га. Однако минералогия, палеонтология и особенности геологии данного месторождения изучены недостаточно. Таким образом, представленная статья призвана в какой-то степени восполнить этот пробел. Целью проведенных исследований является выявление особенностей геологического строения, минерагении и генезиса железорудного месторождения на мысе Железный Рог Таманского полуострова. Методы работы. Основу работы составляют образцы, отобранные авторами во время полевых работ на мысе Железный Рог с июня по июль 2021 года. При выполнении работы были описаны 15 образцов, а также идентифицированы палеонтологические находки и определен их примерный возраст. Результаты работ. Установлено, что бурые железняки залегают в толще серых глин железнорогской свиты (N1-2žr) и совпадают с ними по возрасту, что подтверждается палеонтологическими находками. В разрезе были найдены только те минералы, в состав которых входит железо: борнит, вивианит, лимонит, халькопирит. В работе проанализированы структурно-текстурные особенности пласта и вмещающих его пород, а также ассоциации найденных минералов, на основании чего сделаны выводы, что данный пласт железных руд относится к хемогенному осадочному типу месторождений, образованному из коллоидных растворов The article is devoted to an iron ore deposit, which is a layer of oolitic (brown limestone) iron ores, which comes to the surface during the day at Cape Iron Horn on the shore of the Taman Peninsula. The cape has a length of 1.3 km from west to east and a height of 55 m above sea level. The slope of the cape is broken by numerous cracks due to the erosive effects of wind and sea water, along which landslide bodies are chipping away. Relevance.The iron ore deposit at Cape Iron Horn of the Taman Peninsula has been known since the end of the 19th century, currently (since 1984) it has been given the status of a natural monument, which is why the extraction of raw materials is prohibited in the entire protected area of 19 hectares. However, mineralogy, paleontology and features of the geology of this deposit have not been studied enough. Thus, the presented article is intended to fill this gap to some extent. The Aim of the research is to identify the features of the geological structure, mineralogy and genesis of the iron ore deposit at Cape Iron Horn of the Taman Peninsula. Methods. The work is based on samples selected by the authors during field work at Cape Iron Horn from June to July 2021. During the work, 15 samples were described, as well as paleontological finds were identified and their approximate age was determined. Results.It has been established that brown ironstones lie in the thickness of gray clays of the Zheleznogorskaya formation (N1-2žr) and coincide with them in age, which is confirmed by paleontological findings. Only those minerals containing iron were found in the section: bornite, vivianite, limonite, chalcopyrite. The paper analyzes the structural and textural features of the formation and its host rocks, as well as the associations of the minerals found, on the basis of which it is concluded that this iron ore formation belongs to the chemogenic sedimentary type of deposits formed from colloidal solutions

Der deutsche Barockdichter Georg Philipp Harsdörffer skizziert eine Theorie der Emblematik, die vor allem dessen Anwendungsvielfalt hervorhebt. Er hebt dabei besonders den Unterschied zwischen buchinterner und buchexterner Verwendung auf, indem er sich nicht nur für die Aufnahme der Embleme in Büchern, sondern auch auf Geschirr und Tapeten ausspricht. Der Beitrag liest Harsdörffers extensive Überlegungen nicht nur als Beiträge zur Theorie und Geschichte der Embleme als ›Sinn-Bilder‹, sondern auch als Beitrag zur Designgeschichte. German Baroque poet Georg Philipp Harsdörffer delineates a theory of emblematics that clearly sets itself apart from other contemporary theories, especially by its versatility. In particular, the author negates the difference between internal and external usage of emblems in books not only by promoting the incorporation of emblems into printed works but also by supporting their depiction on dishes and tapestries. This article strives to read Harsdörffer’s extensive thoughts on the matter of emblems not simply as another work on the theory and history of emblematics but rather as a contribution to design history as well

Geology of Greenland Survey Bulletin, 176, 60-65. https://doi.org/10.34194/ggub.v176.5063 _______________ The south-east part of the c. 1800 Ma Ketilidian orogen in South Greenland (Allaart, 1976) is dominated by strongly deformed and variably migmatised metasedimentary rocks known as the ‘Psammite and Pelite Zones’ (Chadwick & Garde, 1996); the sediments were mainly derived from the evolving Julianehåb batholith which dominates the central part of the orogen. The main purpose of the present contribution is to outline the deformational history of the Psammite Zone in the region between Lindenow Fjord and Kangerluluk (Fig. 2), investigated in 1994 and 1996 as part of the SUPRASYD project (Garde & Schønwandt, 1995 and references therein; Chadwick et al., in press). The Lindenow Fjord region has high alpine relief and extensive ice and glacier cover, and the fjords are regularly blocked by sea ice. Early studies of this part of the orogen were by boat reconnaissance (Andrews et al., 1971, 1973); extensive helicopter support in the summers of 1992 and 1994 made access to the inner fjord regions and nunataks possible for the first time.A preliminary geological map covering part of the area between Lindenow Fjord and Kangerluluk was published by Swager et al. (1995). Hamilton et al. (1996) have addressed the timing of sedimentation and deformation in the Psammite Zone by means of precise zircon U-Pb geochronology. However, major problems regarding the correlation of individual deformational events and their relationship with the evolution of the Julianehåb batholith were not resolved until the field work in 1996. The SUPRASYD field party in 1996 (Fig. 1) was based at the telestation of Prins Christian Sund some 50 km south of the working area (Fig. 2). In addition to base camp personnel, helicopter crew and the four authors, the party consisted of five geologists and M.Sc. students studying mafic igneous rocks and their mineralisation in selected areas (Stendal et al., 1997), and a geologist investigating rust zones and areas with known gold anomalies.

This chapter introduces the distinction between thin and thick concepts and then performs a number of functions. First, two major accounts of thick concepts—separationism and nonseparationism—are introduced and, in doing so, a novel account of evaluation is indicated. Second, each chapter is outlined as is the general methodology, followed, third, by a brief history of the discussion of thick concepts, referencing Philippa Foot, Hilary Putnam, Gilbert Ryle, and Bernard Williams among others. Fourth, a number of relevant contrasts are introduced, such as the fact–value distinction and the difference between concepts, properties, and terms. Lastly, some interesting and relevant questions are raised that, unfortunately, have to be left aside.

Economic historians usually have to explain to their economist colleagues the difference between economic history, which focuses on facts, and history of economic thought, which focuses on ideas. Our colleagues in finance departments, typically fascinated by episodes in financial history treated by economic historians, are bound to be disappointed in the lack of attention given to the development of ideas in finance by historians of economic thought. Geoffrey Poitras, a professor of finance at Simon Fraser University, makes a valiant effort to remedy these oversights in his collection of vignettes that highlight the sophistication of financial instruments and analysts of financial markets well before the time of Adam Smith. Starting in 1478 with the publication of the Treviso Arithmetic, a typical textbook of commercial arithmetic for Italian merchants, and ending with brief snippets from the Wealth of Nations, Poitras treats the reader to a fascinating potpourri of excerpts from various manuals, brief biographies of pioneers in financial analysis, and historical discursions on foreign-exchange and stock markets.

The article addresses the production of reproducibility as a topic that has become acutely relevant in the recent discussions on the replication crisis in science. It brings the ethnomethodological stance on reproducibility into the discussions, claiming that reproducibility is necessarily produced locally, on the shop floor, with methodological guidelines serving as references to already established practices rather than their origins. The article refers to this argument empirically, analyzing how a group of novice neuroscientists performs a series of measurements in a transcranial magnetic stimulation experiment. Based on ethnography and video analysis, the article traces a history of the local measurement procedure invented by the researchers in order to overcome the experimental uncertainty. The article aims to demonstrate (1) how reproducibility of the local procedure is achieved in the shop floor work of the practitioners and (2) how the procedure becomes normalized and questioned as incorrect in the course of experimental practice. It concludes that the difference between guidelines and practical actions is not problematic per se; what may be problematic is that researchers can be engaged in different working projects described by the same instruction.
