The desire for transgender futures has grown exponentially in recent years, but many of these futures are traps, concealing a demand to assume normative and neoliberal priorities in exchange for citizenship and belonging. This article argues that some of these traps might be undone through autistic disruption. Dwelling with the life writing and memoir of individuals both autistic and trans, it suggests that, by choice or by circumstance, autistic-trans narratives defy the chrononormative mandate of the able-minded future. By claiming autism and gender nonconformity as mutually inclusive, foregrounding alternative sensorealities, and interrupting the incitement to get better, this article argues that cripping trans time through autistic disruption offers what Gossett, Stanley, and Burton call a “trap door”: a route of escape from the normate trans future and a way for autistic life to insist on its own continuation and survivance.

Morality and gender are intersecting realms of human thought and behavior. Reasoning and action at their intersection (e.g., views of women’s rights legislation) carry important consequences for societies, communities, and individual lives. In this chapter, the authors argue that children’s developing views of morality and gender reciprocally shape one another in important and underexplored ways. The chapter begins with a brief history of psychological theory and research at the intersection of morality and gender and suggests reasons for the historical failure to view gender attitudes through moral lenses. The authors then describe reasons for expecting morality to play an important role in shaping children’s developing gender attitudes and, reciprocally, for gender attitudes to play an important role in shaping children’s developing moral values. The authors next illustrate the importance and relevance of these ideas by discussing two topics at the center of contentious debate in the United States concerning ethical policy and practice: treatment of gender nonconformity and gender-segregated schooling. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future research.

In this book, GerShun Avilez argues that queerness, here meaning same-sex desire and gender nonconformity, introduces the threat of injury and that artists throughout the Black diaspora use queer desire to negotiate spaces of injury. The space of injury does not necessarily pertain to a particular architecture or location; it concerns the perception and engagement of a body. Black queer bodies are perceived as social threats, and this perception results in threats (physical, psychological, socioeconomic) against these bodies. The space of injury describes the potential threat to queer bodies that lingers throughout the social world. Attending to such threats and challenging them constitute defining elements in Black queer artists’ work. In each of the two parts to the book, the author examines how perceptions of the Black queer body in different environments create uncertainty for that body and make it a contested space because of racial and sexual meaning. Part 1 focuses on movement through public space (through streets and across borders) and on how state-backed interruptions seek to inhibit queer bodies. Part 2 explores movement through institutional spaces (prisons and hospitals), which seek to expose the queer body to make it vulnerable to control. Ultimately, the book insists that desire and artistic production function as means to queer freedom when actual policies and legislation fail to ensure civic rights and social mobility.

Japan does not have a cultural history of strong stigma against homosexuality and gender nonconformity in the ways that are true in West, but there is growing evidence that homophobia and transphobia do exist. In this chapter, the history of LGBT issues in Japan is overviewed, focusing mainly on the experiences of gay men and lesbians. Lately, more LGBT-related research has focused on studies on persons with gender identity disorder (GID) due to the approval of gender reassignment surgery as a treatment for GID. Many studies showed that sexual minority youth reported suicidal wishes or behavior because of bullying experiences, feelings of isolation, physical dysphoria, or internal homophobia or transphobia. Moreover, most teachers reported that they did not include any material on LGBT issues in classroom, thus highlighting an urgent need to educate school teachers on these issues.

Our understanding of gender is evolving from a binary system to a continuum whereby gender is fluid, multifaceted, and individually defined or expressed. Businesses, through owners, employees, and customers, as well as company policies and practices, play a role in the acceptance and inclusion of gender nonconforming individuals. One group with a responsibility in relation to gender inclusion is the business education system—undergraduate and graduate business programs that deliver business curriculum, shape business practices, research business issues, and produce business leaders. The purpose of this study is to examine the peer-reviewed literature to identify if and how the interpretation of genders, one that includes gender nonconforming individuals, exists in business education research. While 17 articles were found that cover topics within this general area, an overall lack of academic literature examining business education and gender nonconformity may leave business educators ill-equipped to include gender nonconforming individuals and topics in their classrooms. This work may inform business educators regarding the status of business education in relation to the evolving understanding of gender and identify areas for future work to help ensure that business educators are equipped with the knowledge to enable full gender inclusion in the business classroom.
