Abstract. Connecting the social cognitive approach of human agency by Bandura (1997) and activity theory by Leontiev (1978) , this paper proposes a new theoretical framework for analyzing and understanding employee participation in organizational decision-making. Focusing on the social cognitive concepts of self-reactiveness, self-reflectiveness, intentionality, and forethought, commonalities, complementarities, and differences between both theories are explained. Efficacy in agency is conceived as a cognitive foundation of work motivation, whereas the mediation of societal requirements and resources through practical activity is conceptualized as an ecological approach to motivation. Additionally, we discuss to which degree collective objectifications can be understood as material indicators of employees’ collective efficacy. By way of example, we explore whether an integrated application of concepts from both theories promotes a clearer understanding of mechanisms connected to the practice of employee participation.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, agricultural land-use intensification and decline in freshwater ecosystem integrity pose complex challenges for science and society. Despite riparian management programmes across the country, there is frustration over a lack in widespread uptake, upfront financial costs, possible loss in income, obstructive legislation and delays in ecological recovery. Thus, social, economic and institutional barriers exist when implementing and assessing agricultural freshwater restoration. Partnerships are essential to overcome such barriers by identifying and promoting co-benefits that result in amplifying individual efforts among stakeholder groups into coordinated, large-scale change. Here, we describe how initial progress by a sole farming family at the Silverstream in the Canterbury region, South Island, New Zealand, was used as a catalyst for change by the Canterbury Waterway Rehabilitation Experiment, a university-led restoration research project. Partners included farmers, researchers, government, industry, treaty partners (Indigenous rights-holders) and practitioners. Local capacity and capability was strengthened with practitioner groups, schools and the wider community. With partnerships in place, co-benefits included lowered costs involved with large-scale actions (e.g., earth moving), reduced pressure on individual farmers to undertake large-scale change (e.g., increased participation and engagement), while also legitimising the social contracts for farmers, scientists, government and industry to engage in farming and freshwater management. We describe contributions and benefits generated from the project and describe iterative actions that together built trust, leveraged and aligned opportunities. These actions were scaled from a single farm to multiple catchments nationally.

Background: Recognizing and promoting the factors that affect the self-management behaviors of diabetes leads to a reduction in the number of patients and an improvement in the quality of care. The ecological approach focuses on the nature of people's interactions with their physical and socio-cultural environments. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of self-management behaviors with a comprehensive approach in these patients. Methods: The Keywords were investigated in the relevant national and international databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, and Scientific Information Database, Magiran, and Iran Medex to obtain the articles published from 2009 to 2019. The search and article selection strategy was developed based on the Prisma checklist and was carried out in three steps. Results: Most studies have shown that personal factors had the highest prediction power for the self-management of diabetes. Then, the interpersonal factors, society and policy-making factors, and group and organization factors were most frequently reported predictors of self-management behaviors in diabetic patients. Conclusion: Self-management of diabetes is necessary for controlling it because 95% of care is done by the patient. When designing self-management interventions, factors based on the individual level that increasing self-management behaviors should be taken into account.
