This study examined whether particular recovery activities after work have a positive or negative effect on employee recovery from work (i.e., cognitive, emotional, and physical detachment) and sleep quality. We used a two-wave panel study of 230 health care employees which enabled looking at both short-term and long-term effects (i.e., two-year time interval). Gender, age, marital status, children at home, education level, management position, and working hours were used as control variables. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that work-related off-job activities were negatively associated with cognitive and emotional detachment in both the short and long run, whereas low-effort off-job activities were positively related to cognitive detachment in the short run. Moreover, household/care off-job activities were positively related to sleep quality in the long run, whereas physical off-job activities were negatively associated with sleep quality in the long run. The long-term findings existed beyond the strong effects of baseline detachment and sleep quality. This study highlights the importance of off-job recovery activities for health care employees’ detachment from work and sleep quality. Practical implications and avenues for further research are discussed.

Abstract Background To evaluate the impact of pre-competition sleep quality on the mood and performance of elite air-rifle shooters. Methods This study included 23 elite air-rifle shooters who participated in an air-rifle shooting-competition from April 2019 to October 2019. Sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and wake-up time after sleep onset were monitored using actigraphy. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index and Profile of Mood State were used to assess sleep quality. Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 was used to evaluate mood state. Results The average time to fall asleep, sleep time, sleep efficiency, and subjective sleep quality were 20.6 ± 14.9 min, 7.0 ± 0.8 h, 85.9 ± 5.3%, and 5.2 ± 2.2, respectively. Sleep quality decreased as the competition progressed. Pre-competition sleep time in female athletes was significantly higher than that on the competition day (P = 0.05). Pre-competition sleep latency was significantly longer in women than in men (P = 0.021). During training and pre-competition, the tension, fatigue, depression, and emotional disturbance were significantly lower in athletes with good sleep quality than in athletes with poor sleep quality. Athletes with good sleep quality had significantly more energy. The PSQI total score was positively correlated with positive emotion, TMD, cognitive anxiety, and somatic anxiety POMS scores, and negatively correlated with energy and self-confidence scores. Race scores and depression and somatic anxiety scores were negatively correlated. Conclusion Poor sleep quality negatively impacted the mood of athletes; however, sleep indices and competition performance of athletes during competitions were not significantly correlated.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the early and sustained effects of tinnitus educational counseling on chronic primary tinnitus and related problems. A descriptive longitudinal cohort study was conducted with 159 adult patients suffering from chronic primary tinnitus and sleep problems. All patients received tinnitus educational counseling, sleep adjustment, and vegan dietary advice. At short-term assessment within 3 months and long-term follow-up at 6–26 months, perceived changes in tinnitus were assessed with the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and the Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire (TEQ), respectively. In TEQ, the volume of subjective tinnitus was scored according to realistic environments in which tinnitus could be heard. Sleep quality was assessed with questionnaires developed in our laboratory. Most of the subjects showed significant early improvement in their THI scores (96/159, 60.38%; from 46.11 ± 22.74 to 31.94 ± 20.41,t= 11.16,p< 0.001, Cohen’sd= 0.66). Tinnitus volume (39/159, 24.53%, from 2,2 to 2,1,z= -3.56,p< 0.001) and sleep quality (68/159, 42.77%; from 7.13 ± 3.11 to 6.31 ± 2.75,t= 3.73,p< 0.001, Cohen’sd= 0.28) were also improved. Long-term follow-up TEQ results indicated that tinnitus loudness, the impact of tinnitus on sleep, concentration, and emotional state were all improved since the prior consultation (p= 0.001, 0.026, 0.012, and <0.001). Short-term improvement of tinnitus severity correlated directly with improvement of sleep quality (odds ratio (OR) = 0.30, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.14–0.64,p= 0.002), initial THI score (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.04,p= 0.006), compliance with sleep advice (OR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.02–5.05,p= 0.044), and nervous disposition (OR = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.25–6.30,p= 0.013). A future randomized controlled trial would be carried out to examine the effect of sole tinnitus educational counseling.

<p><strong>Background:</strong> Memory is a place where information is stored from the learning process or experience. There are several types of memory , one of them is short term memory. Declining sleep quality is directly proportional to the decrease in short-term memory. Poor sleep quality is often associated with medical student due to exams or vast amount of tasks. Therefore, researcher wants to see whether there is significant correlation between sleep quality and short-term memory function in students.</p><p><strong>Aim:</strong> To assess the association of the quality of sleep towards short term memory function of medical student of Pelita Harapan University.</p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> This study was conducted with a cross-sectional method, with taking sample using the method of a simple random sample. A total of 90 respondents at University of Pelita Harapan were taken. Data collected sorted out according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Quality of sleep assessed with PSQI questionnaire while short-term memory assessed by Digit span backward test. Results processed with SPSS version 24 and tested with Chi Square.</p><p><strong>Results</strong>: Data analyzed by Chi square test showed there are 33 students (58.9%) have poor sleep quality and short term memory function. There are also significant association between the quality of sleep and short term memory function (p value = 0.026)</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> There is significant association between the quality of sleep and short term memory function of medical students of Pelita Harapan University.</p>

Previous studies have shown that perennial <i>Chan</i> training leads to improvements in brain functioning. However, few studies have investigated the effects of short-term <i>Huatou Chan</i> training. The current study explored the effects of a three-day <i>Huatou Chan </i>training on physical and emotional health, as well as brain state. Seventy healthy subjects were recruited and divided into two groups: the <i>Huatou Chan</i> group and the Control group. The <i>Huatou Chan </i>group received a 3-day <i>Huatou Chan</i> training, while the Control group waited for three days. Both groups completed a 6-min Brain State Index recording, the SCL-90, the Brief Profile of Mood State, the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, and the Index of Well-being, prior to and after the training or waiting period. Results showed that short-term <i>Huatou Chan </i>training had significant benefits on physical and emotional health (somatization, obsessive-compulsive, depression, hostility, and psychoticism), negative emotions (tension-anxiety, depression-dejection, anger-hostility, fatigue-inertia, and confusion-bewilderment), well-being, and attitude towards life. In addition, short-term <i>Chan</i> training can significantly improve brain state, as shown by the index of depression, anxiety, alerting, intelligence, and sleep disorder. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide direct evidence for the benefits of short-term intensive <i>Huatou</i> <i>Chan</i> training on physical and mental health.

Abstract: An Elderly is someone who has reached the age of 60 years or more. The number of elderly in Indonesia in 2020 has reached 28.7 million. This number continues to increase every year. The elderly will naturally experience changes both physically and mentally which can reduce their quality of life. The quality of sleep and cognitive function in the elderly also changes due to aging factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of yoga exercises on sleep quality and cognitive function in the elderly. This research is a literature review. This study studied topics related to the effect of yoga exercises on sleep quality and cognitive function in the elderly from previous studies. The literature reviewed consists of 15 literature with 8 literature discussing the effect of yoga exercises on sleep quality in the elderly and 7 other literature discussed the effect of yoga exercise on cognitive function in the elderly. The results of this study indicate that yoga exercises that are carried out regularly both in the long and short term can improve the quality of sleep in the elderly and maintain cognitive function in the elderly. It can also prevent dementia and Alzheimer's disease in the elderly.Keywords: yoga exercise, sleep quality, cognitive function, elderly  Abstrak: Lansia merupakan seseorang yang sudah mencapai usia 60 tahun atau lebih. Jumlah lansia di Indonesia pada tahun 2020 mencapai 28,7 juta jiwa. Angka ini terus meningkat tiap tahunnya. Lansia secara alamiah akan mengalami perubahan baik secara fisik dan mental yang dapat menurunkan kualitas hidupnya. Kualitas tidur dan fungsi kognitif pada lansia juga mengalami perubahan akibat faktor penuaan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh senam yoga terhadap kualitas tidur dan fungsi kognitif pada lansia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian yang sifatnya literature review. Penelitian ini mempelajari topik-topik terkait pengaruh senam yoga terhadap kualitas tidur dan fungsi kognitif pada lansia dari penelitian-penelitiam sebelumnya. Literatur yang diulas dan dipelajari sebanyak 15 literatur dengan 8 literatur membahas pengaruh senam yoga terhadap kualitas tidur pada lansia dan 7 literatur lainnya mengulas pengaruh senam yoga terhadap fungsi kognitif pada lansia. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa senam yoga yang dilakukan secara rutin baik dalam jangka panjang maupun pendek dapat memperbaiki dan meningkatkan kualitas tidur lansia. Senam yoga juga dapat mempertahankan fungsi kognitif lansia dan mencegah lansia dari penyakit demensia dan alzheimer.Kata kunci : senam yoga, kualitas tidur, fungsi kognitif, lansia

The purpose of this study was to investigate acute Zembrin® (Sceletium tortuosum) supplementation on muscle soreness, markers of muscle damage, mood, and exercise performance following unaccustomed resistance exercise. Untrained females (n = 16) were divided into two groups with a different three-day treatment regimen: (1) placebo (PL) and (2) Zembrin® (ZEM). During the initial visit, baseline perceived soreness, range of motion (ROM), mood state (profile of mood states (POMS) questionnaire), and plasma lactate dehydrogenase concentrations (LDH) were measured followed by the performance of an eccentric bicep curl protocol with their non-dominant arm. The total repetitions and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded throughout the exercise. The participants then supplemented with the corresponding treatment immediately following, the subsequent day, and 30 min prior to completing a 48 h follow-up visit. For the 48 h visit, all procedures were repeated and comparisons were drawn for perceived soreness, ROM, LDH, mood scores, total repetitions, and RPE. The findings indicate that short-term ZEM supplementation resulted in lower perceived soreness (p = 0.020) and a greater preservation of ROM (p = 0.028) at 48 h versus the PL group. Mood worsened from the baseline to 48 h regardless of the treatment (p = 0.043) but the decrements were exacerbated in the PL group compared with the ZEM group (p < 0.001). LDH levels (p = 0.019) and RPE (p = 0.008) were higher and total repetitions were lower (p < 0.001) at 48 h irrespective of the treatment. Although short-term dietary enrichment with ZEM did not alter the exercise performance or biomarkers of muscle damage, the current results suggest ZEM supplementation may be effective in reducing the markers of soreness and preserve mood following unaccustomed eccentric exercise.
