A clinical and pathological study of inherited glaucoma in New Zealand white rabbits

The eyes of 7 rabbits with clinical megaloglobus, selected from a large colony, were studied with slit-lamp microscopy, gonioscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy and tonometry. Selected light and scanning electron microscopy was also performed. There were 11 glaucomatous eyes among the 7 rabbits: gonioscopy demonstrated open iridocorneal angles with absence of pectinate fibres. Incomplete cleavage of the iridocorneal angles in glaucomatous eyes was noted histologically. Because of the similarity of the iridocorneal angles of glaucomatous rabbit eyes with those of human eyes with congenital glaucoma, these rabbits may serve as an experimental model in the understanding and management of certain types of human glaucoma.

Tracy and Doremus have demonstrated chemical bonding between bone and hydroxylapatite with transmission electron microscopy. Now researchers ponder how to improve upon this bond in turn improving the life expectancy and biocompatibility of implantable orthopedic devices.This report focuses on a study of the- chemical influences on the interfacial integrity and strength. Pure hydroxylapatite (HAP), magnesium doped HAP, strontium doped HAP, bioglass and medical grade titanium cylinders were implanted into the tibial cortices of New Zealand white rabbits. After 12 weeks, the implants were retrieved for a scanning electron microscopy study coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy.Following sacrifice and careful retrieval, the samples were dehydrated through a graduated series starting with 50% ethanol and continuing through 60, 70, 80, 90, 95, and 100% ethanol over a period of two days. The samples were embedded in LR White. Again a graduated series was used with solutions of 50, 75 and 100% LR White diluted in ethanol.

In this paper, we report the relation between fabric characteristics and animal model cornea modifications associated with extended use of fluoro-siloxanyl styrene rigid gas permeable contact lens. Siloxanyl styrene and fluoromethacrylate rigid gas permeable contact lens is a newly designed optical medical device used in orthokeratology with an FDA approval of continuous wear for up to 30 days. To assess the influence on the cornea an animal model was used and histological data were collected. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed on the used lenses. Our conclusions concedes that with respects of the material, doctor’s slit lamp lens observation on regular basis should be considered as surface debris and lens scratches can influence the cornea in extended wear. Purpose.Retinal redetachment of silicone oil-filled eyes continues to be a frustrating condition that typically requires retinectomy. We proposed radial retinotomy as a potentially less invasive surgery. Here, we preliminarily explored its feasibility, efficacy, and safety.Methods.Totally 9 eyes of 9 consecutive patients were included in a prospective noncomparative trial. A series of retinotomies were created by endodiathermy in a radial pattern to relax the foreshortened retina. The eye was refilled with fresh silicone oil. The treated eyes were examined via visual acuity (VA) tests, tonometry, slit-lamp microscopy, and fundus photography during a 6-month observation period.Results.The procedure was completed in an average of 28 minutes from silicone oil removal to fresh silicone oil placement. Fundus photography demonstrated that 7 of the 9 eyes (78%) exhibited retinal reattachment. On average, VA was significantly improved within the first 2 weeks (P=0.02) and remained stable for the following 6 months. The change in intraocular pressure was not significant (P=0.76), and no adverse event was observed (0%).Conclusion.Radial retinotomies with endodiathermy were shown to be feasible, effective, and safe in selected cases of inferior contracted retina without vitreous base fibrosis over a 6-month observation period.
