Objectives: Aim of this technical note is to show the applicability of cinematic rendering (CR) for a photorealistic 3-dimensional (3D) visualization of maxillofacial structures. The focus is on maxillofacial hard tissue pathologies. Methods: High density maxillofacial pathologies were selected in which CR is applicable. Data from both, CT and cone beam CT (CBCT) were postprocessed using a prototype CR software. Results: CR 3D postprocessing of CT and CBCT imaging data is applicable on high density structures and pathologies such as bones, teeth, and tissue calcifications. Image reconstruction allows for a detailed visualization of surface structures, their plasticity, and 3D configuration. Conclusions: CR allows for the generation of photorealistic 3D reconstructions of high density structures and pathologies. Potential applications for maxillofacial bone and tooth imaging are given and examples for CT and CBCT images are displayed.

Objectives Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was developed for the office-based quick and precise 3D visualization of maxillofacial region. CBCT requires scanning time of less than 10 seconds and provides isotropic 3D image with high resolution. In this study, we examined the potential role of CBCT as a tool for 3-dimensional evaluation of the glottal insufficiency. Methods CBCT was performed in 2 normal controls and in 14 patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (13 cases) or paresis (1 case). Laryngeal CBCT images were taken in the resting state and during phonation. Furthermore, preoperative and postoperative images were evaluated to assess the impact of phonosurgeries in 5 cases. Results CBCT of the vocalizing vocal fold was successfully performed in all the cases, producing clear coronal images. During phonation, no remarkable differences in levels between the paralyzed and normal vocal folds were observed in 10 cases, proving the 2-dimensional glottal gap (2D cases). On the other hand, the levels of paralyzed vocal folds stayed higher during phonation compared to the normal side in 4 cases, proving the 3-dimensional glottal gap (3D cases). 4 of the 2D cases had injection laryngoplasty and 1 of the 3D cases had arytenoid adduction procedure to correct their glottal gaps. Postoperative CBCT images verified the successful correction of these gaps. Conclusions Our study proved the feasibility of CBCT for 3D evaluation of vocalizing larynx. This quick and easy system may have an informative role to suggest the proper phonosurgical procedure for glottic insufficiency.

This study aimed to reveal the correlation between the radiolucency area around the crown of impacted maxillary canines and dentigerous cysts using cone beam CT (CBCT). CBCT data were obtained from patients with impacted maxillary canines. Three points of five areas (tooth cusp area and buccal, lingual, mesial and distal areas of the crown) were randomly selected, and the distance between the point and the surrounding hard tissue was measured respectively. The mean values were recorded as the radiolucency area. These results were compared with the occurrence of dentigerous cysts during surgery. 58 patients with 76 impacted maxillary canines were included. 14 of the 76 impacted canines were accompanied by cysts (18.42%). With the increase in the thickness of the radiolucency area, the incidence of cysts was significantly increased (p < 0.05). No cysts were found in the compacted canines with 0–1 mm thickness of the radiolucency area. The highest incidence (71.43%) was observed in canines with 3–4 mm thickness of the radiolucency area. This study found that the thickness of the radiolucency area around the crown of the maxillary impacted canine was closely related to the occurrence of dentigerous cysts. CBCT can be used to estimate the occurrence possibility of dentigerous cyst and guide surgical operations.

ABSTRACT Imaging plays a key role in the preoperative diagnosis, surgical planning, and postsurgical assessment of the foot, ankle, and knee pathologies. Interpreting diagnostic imaging accurately is crucial for the clinical practice of orthopedic surgeons. Although among the most used imaging modalities, radiographic assessments are amenable to errors for various technical reasons and superposition of bones. Computed tomography (CT) is a conventional imaging procedure that provides high-resolution images, but fails in considering a truly weight-bearing (WB) condition. In an attempt to overcome this limitation, WB cone beam CT technology has being successfully employed in the clinical practice for the past decade. Besides economically viable and safe, the WB cone beam CT considers WB conditions and provides high-quality scans, thus allowing an equitable and correct interpretation. This review aims to address extensive description and discussion on WBCT, including imaging quality; costs; time consumption; and its applicability in common foot, ankle, and knee, conditions. With this technology increasing popularity, and considering the extensive literature on medical research, radiologists and orthopedic surgeons need to understand its potential applications and use it optimally.
