Objetivo: Describir la variedad de nochebuena Ximena en base a directrices de la UPOV y evaluar su comportamiento con un productor cooperante en el estado de Morelos.Diseño/metodología/aproximación: La variedad se generó mediante los métodos genotécnicos de hibridación, selección recurrente y uso de la técnica de injerto. La descripción varietal se realizó en base al documento de la Unión para la Protección de las Obtenciones Vegetales (UPOV). El diseño experimental utilizado fue un completamente al azar con 10 repeticiones. Se registraron caracteres vegetativos y de bráctea de la planta. La información se estudió mediante análisis de varianza y prueba de comparación de medias Tukey (P? 0.05).Resultados: Ximena presenta porte alto, de amplitud grande con ramificación intermedia. La hoja de forma oval, larga y ancha con peciolo de longitud media. Brácteas de forma elíptica, color rojo, sin torsión y rugosidad entre los nervios. La anchura de la cima es media, glándulas del ciatio de color amarillo de tamaño medio sin alguna deformación. La respuesta de Ximena fue estadísticamente similar a los dos testigos en diámetro del tallo, número de entrenudos, ancho de hoja, longitud de peciolo de hoja y bráctea. En cambio, fue superior estadísticamente en longitud de bráctea, amplitud de dosel de bráctea y diámetro de ciatio.Limitaciones del estudio/implicaciones: La variedad se mantiene como planta madre, a partir de la cual se van a establecer cultivos comerciales. Por lo que, requiere adecuada nutrición y condiciones que no permitan su diferenciación floral.Hallazgos/conclusiones: El comportamiento y arquetipo de Ximena fue comparable a la de variedades comerciales, posee características estéticas que demanda el mercado, puede ser competitiva y se considera candidata para diversificar la oferta de plantas de nochebuena en la temporada de navidad.

Photoperiod and Temperature Influence on Flower Initiation and Development for Euphorbia pulcherrima Grown Under Florida Conditions

Four poinsettia cultivars were grown in glass greenhouses in Gainesville, Fla., in the Fall 1997 to evaluate differences in floral initiation and subsequent development. Three means of regulating photoperiod were 1) natural days 2) long-day lighting to 6 Oct. and then natural days (lights out) 3) long-day lighting to 6 Oct., and then short-day conditions by black cloth for 15 h (black cloth). At 2-day intervals, sample meristems were collected and examined for initiation of reproductive development. Average minimum and maximum temperatures during the first two weeks of October were 22 and 29 °C, respectively, with an average temperature of 25.3 °C. The overall average temperature was 23.2 °C from planting to anthesis. Differences in anthesis dates among cultivars were primarily due to time to initiation vs. rate of development. Under natural days, `Lilo' initiated first on 8 Oct. and `Freedom', `Peterstar', and `Success', followed by 6, 8, and 18 days, respectively. Lights out resulted in `Lilo' initiating 17 Oct., followed by `Freedom', `Peterstar', and `Success' initiating 7, 12, and 15 days later, respectively. Differences between cultivars in time of initiation was reduced under black cloth, where `Lilo' initiated 14 Oct., followed by `Freedom' 2 days later, and `Peterstar' and `Success' 7 days afterward. Initiation was positively correlated to visible bud and anthesis. First color was positively correlated to initiation and visible bud, with the exception of `Lilo'. Growth room studies conducted using various high temperatures and photoperiods indicated similar trends.

AbstractThe CRISPR/Cas9 system is a remarkably promising tool for targeted gene mutagenesis, and becoming ever more popular for modification of ornamental plants. In this study we performed the knockout of flavonoid 3′-hydroxylase (F3′H) with application of CRISPR/Cas9 in the red flowering poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) cultivar ‘Christmas Eve’, in order to obtain plants with orange bract colour, which accumulate prevalently pelargonidin. F3′H is an enzyme that is necessary for formation of cyanidin type anthocyanins, which are responsible for the red colour of poinsettia bracts. Even though F3′H was not completely inactivated, the bract colour of transgenic plants changed from vivid red (RHS 45B) to vivid reddish orange (RHS 33A), and cyanidin levels decreased significantly compared with the wild type. In the genetically modified plants, an increased ratio of pelargonidin to cyanidin was observed. By cloning and expression of mutated proteins, the lack of F3′H activity was confirmed. This confirms that a loss of function mutation in the poinsettia F3′H gene is sufficient for obtaining poinsettia with orange bract colour. This is the first report of successful use of CRISPR/Cas9 for genome editing in poinsettia.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the growth retardant Cycocel application in the growth and development of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) ‘Freedom Red’.  Cycocel was applied by spraying plant shoots at the concentrations of 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 ppm. The increase in cycocel concentrations reduced plant height, leaf size, internodal length, plant spread and the number of flowering plants. All cycocel concentrations resulted in an ideal potted plant height. The optimum spray concentration of Cycocel used to obtain compact and uniformly flowering plants under tropical West Java environment was 1000 ppm.

En México, Euphorbia strigosa se ha identificado como una especie con potencial ornamental, por su coloración y su porte pequeño (35 cm, se considera una versión enana de Euphorbia pulcherrima). La dificultad en la conservación de E. strigosa se encuentra en la gran variabilidad de sus semillas en función de las condiciones ambientales y genotípicas donde la especie crece. Por lo tanto, el objetivo del presente estudio fue describir las semillas de E. strigosa, de plantas silvestres del Estado de Nayarit, México (2013-2014). Se midieron variables grupales de peso de 1000 y 100 semillas, así como el número de semillas en 1 g y en 10 mL. Además, una muestra de 130 semillas de cada año se les evaluó individualmente variables físicas. Las semillas se clasifican en función de tres grados de luminosidad del color café (claro, medio y oscuro) y cuatro rangos de peso (3,0-8,0; 8,1-13,0: 13.1-18.0 y > 18,1 mg). Basado en la clasificación de los factores: año de colecta, luminosidad del color café y el peso, se formaron 22 subgrupos. En cada subgrupo se evaluó el porcentaje de germinación. Se presentaron diferencias significativas en todas las características evaluadas, lo que indica la diversidad morfogenética de las semillas colectadas.

Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotzsch `V-14 Glory') grown as single-pinched plants and received constant fertigation of Hoagland solution with N at 210 mg·L-1 of 100% NO3-N or 60% NO3-N : 40% NH4-N; P at 7.8 and 23 mg·L-1; and leaching fractions (LFs) of 0, 0.2, or 0.4. The P at 23 mg·L-1 used in this study was about half the P concentration typically provided from a 20N-4.4P-16.6K fertilizer at 200 mg·L-1 N fertigation. The total P applied via fertigation ranged from 51 mg at the 0 LF to 360 mg at the 0.4 LF. The leachate P concentration ranged from 0.2 to 46 mg·L-1. With P at 7.8 mg·L-1, the percentage of total P recovered in the leachate was 6% to 7%. At 23 mg·L-1 P fertigation, however, the total P recovered in the leachate with 60% NO3-N treatment was 2-times greater than with 100% NO3-N treatment. This result is attributed to a lower substrate pH, which resulted from NH4-N uptake and nitrification processes with 60% NO3-N fertigation. The P concentration in the recently matured leaves with 7.8 mg·L-1 P fertigation was in the normal range of 0.3% to 0.6%. Fertigation P can be reduced by up to 80% and still be sufficient for producing quality poinsettias. Reducing the fertigation P concentration is beneficial because it reduces P leaching, reduces fertilizer costs, and reduces luxury consumption.
