The following paper deals with the mythological story about Apollo’s fight against a she-snake at Pytho, where he eventually builds a sanctuary – the Delphic Oracle. First, it is attempted to decipher the terms Pytho, Delphi and Omphalos. A symbolism revolving around an underlying theme of birth is considered. Then, the stories about Apollo and about Kadmos, as well as a motif in Pherecydes’ theogony, and the Anatolian Illuyanka Myth are being presented as subjects of a comparative analysis. This leads to the proposal that all four narratives have a common origin in Western Anatolia or Pre-Greek Hellas.

The article provides a comparative analysis of epic formulas from the Shor epic with similar constructions from the Yakut olonkho formed on the basis of rhythmic and syntactic parallelism. The relevance of the study is due to the need to identify the degree of interconnection between the Yakut olonkho and the Shor epic at the level of epic formulas, which still remains outside the field of view of researchers. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that when sampling material from the Yakut epic, the author is not limited to examples from the same olonkho text, but uses a more varied approach and involves formulas from several texts. In the analysis of epic formulas, the main focus is on keywords, as well as on the general context of the peripheral components of stable constructions. As a result of the study, it is established that the analyzed examples are universals in which the uniformity of the structure and the commonality of the content are viewed. According to the author of the article, these universals are the result of a common origin and culture of peoples. It is concluded that the patterns of rhythmic-syntactic parallelism are preserved due to the stability of epic formulas and indicate a genetic relationship between the Yakut olonkho and the Shor epic.

ABSTRACTClustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) in combination with associated sequences (cas) constitute the CRISPR-Cas immune system, which uptakes DNA from invasive genetic elements as novel “spacers” that provide a genetic record of immunization events. We investigated the potential of CRISPR-based genotyping ofLactobacillus buchneri, a species relevant for commercial silage, bioethanol, and vegetable fermentations. Upon investigating the occurrence and diversity of CRISPR-Cas systems inLactobacillus buchnerigenomes, we observed a ubiquitous occurrence of CRISPR arrays containing a 36-nucleotide (nt) type II-A CRISPR locus adjacent to fourcasgenes, including the universalcas1andcas2genes and the type II signature genecas9. Comparative analysis of CRISPR spacer content in 26L. buchneripickle fermentation isolates associated with spoilage revealed 10 unique locus genotypes that contained between 9 and 29 variable spacers. We observed a set of conserved spacers at the ancestral end, reflecting a common origin, as well as leader-end polymorphisms, reflecting recent divergence. Some of these spacers showed perfect identity with phage sequences, and many spacers showed homology toLactobacillusplasmid sequences. Following a comparative analysis of sequences immediately flanking protospacers that matched CRISPR spacers, we identified a novel putative protospacer-adjacent motif (PAM), 5′-AAAA-3′. Overall, these findings suggest that type II-A CRISPR-Cas systems are valuable for genotyping ofL. buchneri.

The paper presents legal comparative analysis of the Roman societas and the contemporary civil law partnership in Polish and German law. The author analyses the origins and essence of a civil law partnership, then describes similarities and differences of internal and external relations between the partners of a civil law partnership. The analyzed sources are: the Institutes of Gaius, the Digest of Justinian, and Polish and German Civil Codes. The author stresses that the structure of the contemporary civil law partnership in Polish and German legal systems is still very similar to the Roman societas, mainly because of its common origin.

The discovery of a hitherto unknown map of Alanya dating from the early seventeenth century enables a comparison to be made between the very detailed fortifications that it depicts and those that are standing today. Such a comparative analysis should permit some inferences about the form of the Seljuk and early Ottoman fortifications that are now ruinous. The Italian military provenance of the map gives an opportunity to illuminate briefly the depredations of the Medici navy in southern and western Anatolia. Most historians have been reluctant to use maps as evidence, the few who have done so have often fallen into the pit of misinterpretation that the former, and perhaps wiser, have avoided: but the study of the history of cartography is gradually emerging from the exclusively archaeological stage, in which it has been delving for over a century, and the corpus of information about maps has now grown to the point where no historian can afford to ignore their value as evidence, provided that he is able to evaluate them accurately. It is in evaluation that the historian of cartography owes a duty to his fellow historians.
