The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the language learning strategies of freshman students and their learning styles. This study is a descriptive research and employs a relational screening model. Participants of the study were 328 freshman students majoring in different fields at Necmettin Erbakan University Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education in Turkey. Data were collected via Turkish version of “Strategy Inventory of Language Learning (SILL)”, originally developed by Oxford (1990) and adapted into Turkish by Cesur and Fer (2007) and “Big 16 Learning Modality Inventory” by Şimşek (2002). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and the Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The research results revealed that learning styles have a significant effect on language learning strategy use. The results and implications of the study are discussed and suggestions for future research are offered.

Proficiency in English language depends on the knowledge of its vocabulary possessed by the second and foreign language learners and even the native speakers. Though developing the vocabulary is vital, it poses several problems, especially, to non-native students of English. Students with a low vocabulary knowledge show weak academic performance in different courses related to the language skills, linguistics, literature, and translation at the university level of education. This study, in particular, aims to investigate the problems faced by English majors in learning the vocabulary at Prince Stattam bin Abdulaziz University (PSAU) in Saudi Arabia. It also puts forward some vocabulary-learning strategies to minimize the potential problems. The data consist of the responses of 100 student-participants (undergraduates) randomly picked up from five different levels (four, five, six, seven, and eight) of 4-Year BA English Program at PSAU. This quantitative study uses an online questionnaire, as an instrument, to collect the data. The results reveal that the English majors at PSAU face several problems in learning the vocabulary such as knowing the meanings of new words, pronouncing new words, using new words correctly, memorizing and spelling new vocabulary and so on. To its contribution, this study emphasizes the importance of learning the English vocabulary, draws students’ attention towards it, highlights the problems encountered by students, and raises their awareness of the vocabulary. Future research may explore teachers’ perspectives on students’ vocabulary-learning problems and instructional methods implemented to teach the vocabulary in English language classrooms.

Resumo: A Ecologia é uma ciência que possui diferentes definições, sendo as mais utilizadas as de Haeckel e Krebs, contrastantes do ponto de vista temporal e conceitual. Por isso propomos: i) registrar as definições de Ecologia presentes nos livros didáticos utilizados na Universidade Estadual do Ceará, Faculdade de Educação de Itapipoca UECE/FACEDI e nas escolas do ensino básico de Itapipoca-Ceará e ii) acessar as representações do termo Ecologia partilhada pelos discentes de Biologia da FACEDI que já cursaram as disciplinas de Ecologia e aqueles que ainda não as cursaram. Com uma abordagem quanti-qualitativa descritiva documental, analisamos 35 livros, 15 universitários e 20 livros do ensino básico. Para verificar quais conceitos são compreendidos pelos licenciandos utilizamos um questionário, respondido por 97 estudantes universitários e analisado pelo método de análise conteúdo. Registramos que a maioria dos livros (27) trazia apenas a definição de Haeckel e utilizavam o termo Ecologia como sinônimo de Ciências Ambientais; apenas sete livros traziam as duas definições e um trazia apenas o conceito de Krebs. Esses dados demonstram que a definição de Krebs é menos difundida do que a de Haeckel, e isso se soma a uma limitação conceitual ao considerar Ecologia como sinônimo de Ciências Ambientais, embora ambas tenham escopo distintos. Registramos também que as percepções de Ecologia partilhada pelos alunos estão mais próximas da definição de Haeckel. Concluímos que a inconsistência conceitual amplamente difundida nos livros didáticos é também partilhada pelos alunos, especialmente aqueles que ainda não cursaram as disciplinas de Ecologia.Palavras-Chave: Ensino de Ecologia. Krebs.  REPRESENTATIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF ECOLOGY: ANALYSIS OF DIDACTIC BOOKS AND CONCEPTION OF STUDENTS OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES Abstract: Ecology is a science that has different definitions the most used are those of Haeckel and Krebs, contrasting from a temporal and conceptual point of view. Therefore, we propose to: i) record the definitions of ecology present in the textbooks used at the State University of Ceara, the Faculty of Education of Itapipoca UECE/FACEDI and at the primary schools of Itapipoca-Ceara and ii) access the representations of the term Shared Ecology by the FACEDI Biology students who have already studied Ecology and those who have not yet studied them. With a descriptive quantitative-qualitative approach, we analyzed 35 books, 15 university students and 20 books of basic education. To verify which concepts are understood by the licensees we use a questionnaire, answered by 97 university students and analyzed by the content analysis method. We note that most of the books (27) contained only Haeckel's definition and used the term Ecology as synonymous with Environmental Sciences; Only seven books had the two definitions and only one contains only Krebs. These data demonstrate that the definition of Krebs is less widespread than that of Haeckel, and this adds to a conceptual limitation when considering Ecology as synonymous with Environmental Sciences, although both have a different scope. We also note that the perceptions of Ecology shared by students are closer to Haeckel's definition. We conclude that the conceptual inconsistency widely diffused in textbooks is also shared by the students, especially those who have not yet studied the subjects of Ecology.Keywords: Teaching Ecology. Research Highlights The study proposed two focus studies and results indicated there is a conformity between Brain Based Learning (BBL) and students' intrapersonal intelligence toward characteristics of junior high school mathematics learning. Implementation of Brain Based Learning (BBL) and intrapersonal intelligence in junior high school mathematics learning can improve student’s learning outcomes.   Research Objectives This research aims to knowing activities of junior high school mathematics learning and to knowing conformity of characteristics between Brain Based Learning (BBL) and intrapersonal intelligence with junior high school mathematics learning. BBL as a learning strategies and intrapersonal intelligence as an internal factors of students must be the main consideration in learning activities, including in this case mathematics learning. Learning is more directed at construction than instruction, which has implications for the role of teachers and students (Reigeluth and Carr-Chellman, 2009). Learning strategies concept is a various types of plans used by the teacher to achieve goals (Silver et al., 2012). In simple terms, this view states that learning strategies are ways to do something in achieving goals. Learning mathematics is learning about the concepts and structure of mathematics and looking for relationships between the two on the material being studied (Bruner, 2009). In the learning activities, learning materials must be adapted to the abilities and cognitive structures of students. Learning material must be related to the concepts that are already owned so that new ideas can be fully absorbed by students (Ausubel, 2012). Learning activities must be gradual, sequential and always based on past learning experiences.   Methodology This type of research is qualitative descriptive. The approach used is qualitative with descriptive methods and literature studies. Data collection uses documentation studies, observations, and interviews with teachers and students. Data collection was conducted in junior high school of SMP Assahil Lampung Timur in the 2018/2019 academic year. The mathematics teachers and students were included in this study as a respondents. In this study the data analysis used was quantitative descriptive and qualitative descriptive analysis. Quantitative descriptive analysis is used to present and analyze data relating to mathematics learning outcomes over the past three years. Qualitative descriptive analysis is used to interpret and analyze data regarding the learning process of mathematics that has taken place.   Results The study indicate that mathematics teachers have only used expository learning strategies in learning activities. The expository learning strategy is a form of teacher-centered learning approach. Mathematical learning outcomes are not satisfactory. The Mathematics learning is a learning process that involves active students building mathematical knowledge (Cobb, 2013). In mathematics learning there is a process of developing students' creativity to improve their abilities and beliefs in building knowledge and mastering good mathematics subject matter. The Characteristics of Brain Based Learning (BBL) emphasizes students to play an active role in building the concepts learned (Ulger, 2018). The steps in the BBL learning strategy include creating a learning environment that challenges students' thinking skills (regulated immersion), creates a relaxed learning environment, and creates actual and meaningful learning situations for students (active processing). Intrapersonal intelligence is self-knowledge as intelligence that involves self-awareness or self-sensitivity, thought processes, realizing changes that occur in oneself, involving skills of cooperation and communication both verbally and nonverbally (Alder, 2001). The characteristics of intrapersonal intelligence consist of three main aspects that can be used as benchmarks, namely recognizing oneself, knowing one's own desires, and knowing what is necessary for oneself.   Findings The results of data analysis, it was found that the learning activities that had taken place so far only used expository learning strategies. The teacher does not apply learning strategies that are in accordance with the internal factors of students in learning mathematics. The literature review show that there is a match between the characteristics of junior high school mathematics material, the characteristics of BBL learning strategies and the characteristics of intrapersonal intelligence. This study aims at examining the relationship between Turkish teacher candidates’ metacognitive learning strategies and critical listening attitudes as well as determining whether theircritical listening attitudes and the use of metacognitive learning strategies vary with gender, age, year in college, and grade point average (GPA). Accordingly, a correlational survey design was used. The sample of the study consists of 191 Turkish teacher candidates studying at the Turkish teacher education program of Amasya University, Faculty of Education. The Metacognitive Learning Strategies Determining Scale developed by Gündoğan Çöğenli & Güven (Bilişüstü…) and the Critical Listening Attitude Scale developed by Taşkın were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed using statistical package software SPSS 22.0. T-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis were performed. A positive correlation was determined between Turkish teacher candidates’ critical listening behaviors and the use of metacognitive learning strategies.We believe that the findings of this study will contribute to determining critical listening attitudes.
