Abstract A new severe plastic deformation for manufacturing thin-walled tube made of AZ31 magnesium alloy called TEB(Tube-Extrusion-Bending ) process, which combines direct extrusion with two step bending, has been developed to manufacture tube. The TEB process has been researched by using finite element modeling (FEM) method. The rules of extrusion temperatures and the extrusion forces varying with process parameters have been developed. A TEB process with installed containers and dies has been constructed to perform tests in order to validate the FEM model with different process conditions. And the microstructures evolution have been researched based on effective strains evolution. The results showed that refined and uniform microstructures can be achieved by TEB process. The research results showed that the TEB process would produce the serve plastic deformation and improve the recrystallization of the grains. The comparisons of FEM simulation and experimental results have been made to obtain the relative important principles of TEB process.

Abstract To research the influence mechanisms of expanding angles on extrusion-shearing-expansion(ESE) process of AZ31 magnesium alloy thin-walled tubes, the effects of different expanding angles on microstructures and mechanical properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy during extrusion-shear-expansion process have been investigated by optical microscope(OM),scanning electron microscope (SEM),X-ray diffractometer(XRD).Three expanding angles 130°,140°,150° have been used. The forming loads varying with expanding ratios, and equivalent strains at various expanding angles have been simulated by Deform-3D software. The research results show that the qualities and mechanical properties of the formed tube are satisfactory, and extrusion-shearing-expanding process can refine the grain of AZ31 magnesium alloy thin-walled tubes. The grain sizes decrease with the decrease of expanding angles. When the expanding angle is 140°,the comprehensive mechanical properties are best, and yield strength is 122.3MPa,the tensile strength 288.6MPa,the elongation 15.2%, the texture intense is optimized due to the DRX.The deflections of basal plane for most grains are obvious relative to the extrusion direction(ED).

Abstract Grain refinement has a significant influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys. In this study, a series of Al–Ti–C-xGd (x = 0, 1, 2, 3) master alloys as grain refiners were prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The synthesis mechanism of the Al–Ti–C-xGd master alloy was analyzed. The effects of Al–Ti–C-xGd master alloys on the grain refinement and mechanical properties of AZ31 (Mg-3Al-1Zn-0.4Mn) magnesium alloys were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the Al–Ti–C-xGd alloy contains α-Al, TiAl3, TiC and the core–shell structure TiAl3/Ti2Al20Gd. The refining effect of the prepared Al–Ti–C–Gd master alloy is obviously better than that of Al–Ti–C master alloy. The grain size of AZ31 magnesium alloy was reduced from 323 μm to 72 μm when adding 1 wt.% Al–Ti–C-2Gd master alloy. In the same condition, the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of as-cast alloy were increased from 130 MPa, 7.9% to 207 MPa, 16.6% respectively.

Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) method was used for achieving very fine-grained structure and increased mechanical properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy. The experiments were focused on the, in the initial state, hot extruded alloy. ECAP process was realized at the temperature 250°C and following route Bc. It was found that combination of hot extrusion and ECAP leads to producing of material with significantly fine-grained structure and improves mechanical properties. Alloy structure after the fourth pass of ECAP tool with helix matrix 30° shows a fine-grained structure with average grain size of 2 µm to 3 µm and high disorientation between the grains. More experimental results are discussed in this article.

Abstract Due to demand of strong toughness of thin walled tube, and good secondary forming properties and high-precision dimension, New plastic forming method should be researched to achieve a complete filling, uniform deformation and microstructure evolution during forming process. To obtain the deformation mechanisms of a new composite extrusion for thin walled tube fabricated by tube corrugated equal channel angular extrusion has been researched which is shorten as “TC-ECAE” in this paper. Finite element DEFORMTM-3D software to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of magnesium billet during TC-ECAE process has been employed. Computed parameters including workpiece material characteristics and process conditions have been taken into consideration. The pridictions of strains distributions and damage distributions and effective stress distributions and flow velocities distributions and microstructures evolutions have been explored. The results proved that the TC-ECAE process is a forming method for magnesium alloy tube which is suitable for large scale industrial application. The TC-ECAE process would cause serve plastic deformation and improve the dynamic recrystallization of magnesium alloy during TC-ECAE process.
