Background: Korean medicine treatment was assessed in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) according to subgroups of: sex, age, cause of knee OA, body mass index, hospitalization period, history, OA compartment, phenotype, and comorbidity. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 122 inpatients who were admitted to the Hospital of Korean Medicine for Korean medicine treatment of knee pain, and were diagnosed with knee OA based on magnetic resonance imaging findings. Analysis of patient subgroups (sex, age, cause of knee OA, body mass index, hospitalization period, history, OA compartment, phenotype, and comorbidity) was carried out and treatments including acupuncture, cupping, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine, chuna therapy, medicinal steaming therapy, manual therapy, and extracorporeal shock wave therapy were listed. The numeric rating scale (NRS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and 5-level EuroQol- 5 Dimension (EQ-5D-5L) scores were measured before and after treatment to assess the effects of treatment on pain and quality of life. Results: Seventeen males and 105 females were included in this study. Most patients were in their 60s. In the total study population, NRS, WOMAC, and EQ-5D-5L scores were improved statistically significant when comparing before and after treatment. The NRS and WOMAC scores improved statistically significant in the medial, patellofemoral, medial + patellofemoral, medial + lateral + patellofemoral compartment. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatment significantly reduced pain, stiffness, and physical dysfunction, and improved the quality of life of patients with knee OA, suggesting that it may be an effective alternative to the current conservative treatments.

Abstract Objective: This study investigated the effect of hypermobility on pain, joint stiffness, physical function, and quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Design: Sixty-four patients diagnosed with bilateral knee osteoarthritis were included; 42 patients in Group 1 were those with hypermobility and 22 patients in Group 2. There were 40 women and 2 men in Group 1, and 16 women and six men in Group 2 were those without hypermobility. The age, sex, and body mass index of all patients recorded. The WOMAC and SF-36 tests performed on the patients.Results: The average ages were 51.40±5.42 and 53.36±4.31, respectively, and there was no statistically significant difference. The body mass index was high in the hypermobility group, and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.028). Pain and stiffness were higher in the hypermobility group than in the non-hypermobility group in the WOMAC subgroups and total scores (p=0.030, p=0.002, p=0.047). The non-hypermobility group had better SF-36 social function and pain scale scores. The difference was statistically significant (p=0.016, p=0.004).Conclusions: Hypermobility aggravates the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. Hypermobility evaluated in all patients diagnosed with knee OA. A more intense and long-term rehabilitation program should be determined for these patients to prevent injuries and improve proprioception.

Current research shows that individuals with intellectual disabilities do not engage in enough physical activity to acquire health benefits. However, cooperative learning has been shown to be an effective tool for inclusion and for improving healthy physical habits. The aim of this study is to contrast an explanatory model which incorporates quality of life, active time in cooperative activities, body mass index and age, as well as to analyze, using multi-group structural equations, the existing associations according to the sex of subjects with intellectual disabilities. The convenience sampling used allowed the collection of data from a total of 156 subjects in Granada (Spain), aged between 18–55 years. In terms of gender, the sample was homogeneous, representing 52.6% (n = 82) for women and 47.4% (n = 74) for men. The active time during the cooperative learning was recorded with the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 activity band, for the quality of life scale (GENCAT) was used, and the body mass index was calculated through its standardized equation. Age was directly associated with body mass index in both sexes. Likewise, age was positively related to the active time of women. Quality of life was directly associated with active time and body mass index was inversely related to active time. This study shows the importance of active time during work and cooperative learning in individuals with intellectual disabilities, as it is associated with an improvement in the quality of life and a reduction in the problems of sedentarism, overweight, and obesity.
