Organic coatings are widely employed in the corrosion protection of most metal surfaces, particularly steel. They provide a barrier against corrosive species present in the environment, due to their high resistance to oxygen, water and ions transport. This study focuses on the evaluation of corrosion protection performance of epoxy paint on the carbon steel surface in chloride environment (3% NaCl) by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The electrochemical behavior of painted surface was estimated by EIS parameters that contained paint film resistance, paint film capacitance and double layer capacitance. On the basis of calculation using EIS spectrums it was observed that pore resistance (Rpore) decreased with the appearance of doubled layer capacitance (Cdl) due to the electrolyte penetration through the film. This was further confirmed by the decrease of diffusion resistance (Rd) which was also the indicator of the deterioration of paint film protectiveness. Microscopic analyses have shown that oxidation dominates the corroded surfaces.

On the diesel engine’s test bed, this paper has studied the parameters regarding the diesel engine’s rotational speed, the piston ring’s width and wearing capacity and so on, and their relation with the output signal of the magnetoresistive sensor under the reverse drawing of the diesel engine. The research discovered that the piston ring’s wear and the magnetoresistive sensor’s output have the corresponding relationship. And on the oil tanker with the 6RTA52U diesel engine, the influence of the diesel engine’s operating parameters and the load situations to the magnetoresistive sensor’s output is surveyed under four kinds of different operating modes. The test result and the research conclusion provide the technical foundation for the online Wear monitoring of the large-scale marine diesel engine’s piston ring.

Fuzzy logic is a technique that attempts to systematically and mathematically emulate human reasoning. This paper investigates the feasibility of applying fuzzy logic to transportation and shipbuilding market modeling, analysis and forecasting. Fuzzy systems called fuzzy decision modelers (FDMs) are developed based on fuzzy logic techniques to model the crude oil tanker freight rate market, the tanker new order market and the tanker scrapping market. Our results show that the FDMs are able to model and forecast these economic systems very well. In addition, the FDMs also provide valuable insights into market mechanisms and market participants' decision-making patterns. The FDMs are mathematical model-free, nonlinear systems capable of capturing complicated relationships among economic variables. The FDMs are easy to develop and easy to interpret. These advantages of fuzzy systems suggest that fuzzy logic techniques are a promising alternative in shipping and shipbuilding market modeling, analysis and forecasting.

A methodology for risk analysis applicable to shipping in arctic waters is introduced. This methodology uses the Bowtie relationship to represent an accident causes and consequences. It is further used to quantify the probability of a ship accident and also the related accident consequences during navigation in arctic waters. Detailed fault trees for three possible ship accident scenarios in arctic transits are developed and represented as bowties. Factors related to cold and harsh conditions and their effects on grounding, foundering, and collision are considered as part of this study. To illustrate the application of the methodology, it is applied to a case of an oil-tanker navigating on the Northern Sea Route (NSR). The methodology is implemented in a Markov Chain Monte Carlo framework to assess the uncertainties arisen from historical data and expert judgments involved in the risk analysis.

The minimal ballast water crude oil tanker has the design of a trapezoidal-shape inclined bilge entirely instead of the regular U-shaped tanker, also known as the trapezoidal tanker, which reduces the amount of the ballast water. This type of ship does not only reduce the cost on ballast water management, but also is beneficial to the environment for reducing the risk of water pollution. Since it is a new design, there are no applicable specifications for the assessment of structural strength at present. In order to find out characteristics of the yielding and buckling strength of this type of ship, the strength of a conventional tanker and a trapezoidal tanker are calculated by a finite element method and then compared with a variety of cases. It can be seen that the trapezoidal tanker has lots of advantages in strength and lighting weight.
