A series of branched styryl derivatives based on 1,3,5-triazine were studied by nonlinear optical property measurement, degenerated pump-probe, and time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy methods to elucidate the two-photon absorption (TPA) properties and intramolecular interactions between branches. Significant enhancement of the TPA cross-section was observed in multi-branched derivatives. The anisotropy of multi-branched compounds shows faster decay and small residual values, indicating strong intramolecular interactions between branches, which further confirmed the TPA enhancement mechanism.

The reflection of probe infrared femtosecond radiation pulses from a gallium arsenide substrate of the (001) orientation in the presence of more powerful pump pulses of the same radiation with a peak power of up to 1 GW/cm2 was investigated. A Yb3+:KY(WO4)2 laser with a central wavelength of 1 035 nm, a repetition rate of 70 MHz, a pulse duration of 130 fs, and an average power of not more than 0.9 W worked in the GaAs transparency region. The experimental dependence of the recorded signal on the pump radiation intensity is in qualitative agreement with the model dependence for two-photon absorption. The results are important for the correct interpretation of reflectivity kinetics of quantum wells.

We present the results of nonlinear optical pump-probe experiments on photoactive yellow protein (PYP). We are able to completely bleach the 446 nm absorption peak of PYP by one-photon excitation using a cw argon laser. We calculate the corresponding index change and find it to be similar to that of bacteriorhodopsin. We also determine an upper limit to the two photon absorption cross-section of PYP by looking for bleaching of the 446 nm absorption peak under irradiation by femtosecond pulses at 820–910 nm. No TPA signal is observed.
