This paper presents a time-to-digital converter (TDC) based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) with a tapped delay line (TDL) architecture. This converter employs dual delay lines (DDLs) to enable real-time calibrations, and the proposed DDL-TDC measures the statistical distribution of delays to permit the calibration of nonuniform delay cells in FPGA-based TDC designs. DDLs are also used to set up alternate calibrations, thus enabling environmental effects to be immediately accounted for. Experimental results revealed that relative to a conventional TDL-TDC, the proposed DDL-TDC reduced the maximum differential nonlinearity by 26% and the integral nonlinearity by 30%. A root-mean-squared value of 32 ps was measured by inputting the constant delay source into the proposed DDL-TDC. The proposed scheme also maintained excellent linearity across a range of temperatures.

Using the SIFT algorithm for image mosaicing is the study hotspot in recent years, which is in a wide range of applications. SIFT algorithm of large amount of data and the time-consuming calculation method is not applicable in higher real-time video mosaicing. Firstly using SURF extracts feature points, secondly using the nearest matching method, RANSAC and least-square method solve the homography matrix between images, and finally using normalized covariance related function for obtaining the best effect of the homography matrix. The algorithm not only meets the accuracy requirement of parameter estimation, but also has smaller computation and faster speed than SIFT. It has proved that the algorithm used in this paper has good real-time performance, high accuracy and the ideal effect, which can satisfy the requirement of real-time mosaicking.

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is an attractive technology for imaging biological tissues because it can capture both functional and structural information with satisfactory spatial resolution. Current commercially available PA imaging systems are limited by their bulky size or inflexible user interface. We present a new handheld real-time ultrasound/photoacoustic imaging system (HARP) consisting of a detachable, high-numerical-aperture (NA) fiber bundle-based illumination system integrated with an array-based ultrasound (US) transducer and a data acquisition platform. In this system, different PA probes can be used for different imaging applications by switching the transducers and the corresponding jackets to combine the fiber pads and transducer into a single probe. The intuitive user interface is a completely programmable MATLAB-based platform. In vitro phantom experiments were conducted to test the imaging performance of the developed PA system. Furthermore, we demonstrated (1) in vivo brain vasculature imaging, (2) in vivo imaging of real-time stimulus-evoked cortical hemodynamic changes during forepaw electrical stimulation, and (3) in vivo imaging of real-time cerebral pharmacokinetics in rats using the developed PA system. The overall purpose of this design concept for a customizable US/PA imaging system is to help overcome the diverse challenges faced by medical researchers performing both preclinical and clinical PA studies.
