Increasing evidence suggests that eveningness is associated with increased risk for depression. Eveningness, however, is also associated with poor sleep quality and the unique role of eveningness in depressive symptomatology remains to be elucidated. The goal of the current study, therefore, was to examine the inter-relationships between eveningness, subjective sleep quality and depressive symptoms in healthy participants free of current or previous depression and sleep disorder. Here, 167 healthy participants (mean age 24.16, 129/38 females/males) completed the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Bootstrap mediation analysis for a simple mediation model including rMEQ, PSQI and CES-D was applied. Eveningness was associated with increased depressive symptoms and mediation analysis showed that this relationship was partly mediated by sleep quality. Our results suggest that indicators of depression observed in evening-type individuals cannot be attributed exclusively to disturbed sleep. We suggest that interventions that target both sleep quality and dysfunctionl cognitive styles would be optimal to promote well-being in evening-type individuals.

Irregular sleep patterns are often a major hindrance in the life of undergraduate students, fueled by the undulating lifestyle anomalies and new vulnerabilities that come with college life. Insomnia, slapdash sleep cycles, and daytime dysfunction may affect both physical as well as mental well-being of individuals. India has the largest share of young adults in the world, which also makes it a likely epicenter for increasing sleep disorders. Students are often exposed to a significantly high level of academic burden and turn to options such as pulling all-nighters that further propel these issues. Most students realize the effects of a bad sleep schedule but nonetheless sacrifice it for the promise of better grades ignoring the double-edged sword. This study assesses the association of self-rated subjective sleep quality with habits prevalent among undergraduate students in India and its effect on their academic performance. Based on a modified PSQI questionnaire, the participants’ sleep quality was scored and a large majority of students showed an overall moderately good sleep quality. Insufficient sleep was seen to have an adverse effect on facial appearance, work productivity and enthusiasm for daily chores, among students. Unlike previous reports, the current dataset did not reveal any significant impact of sleep quality on the academic performance of the students. We also analyzed the most prevalent factors that were responsible for disruption of sleep in college goers and probed the major reasons for nighttime phone usage, which revealed social media to be a major contributor. Although the negative impact of sleep deprivation on academic performance has been studied earlier, any differential impact of stream has not been addressed thoroughly. Unlike the common belief of disparity induced due to stream-based academic pressure, our survey analysis showed insignificant contribution of stream leading to differences in sleep quality of students. Although participants’ reported mild disruption in sleep, it was observed across all streams and it did not seem to have an immediate effect on overall sleep quality of undergraduate students.

Objectives: Estimate the associations between cannabis use with expectations of cannabis being a sleep aid, subjective sleep outcomes, and the influence of age on these relationships. Methods: In 152 moderate cannabis users (67% female, mean age = 31.45, SD = 12.96, age range = 21-70) we assessed the influence of cannabis use history and behaviors on expectations of cannabis being a sleep aid and subjective sleep outcomes via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We used moderation analysis to examine the role of age in the relationship between cannabis use and subjective sleep outcomes. Results: Cannabis use along with more frequent cannabis use were associated with increased expectations that cannabis use improves sleep (all β > 0.03, p < 0.04). Frequency of recent cannabis use and reported average THC or CBD concentration were largely not associated with subjective sleep outcomes. However, endorsing current cannabis use was associated with worse subjective sleep quality (β = 1.34, p = 0.02) and increased frequency of consuming edibles was associated with worse subjective sleep efficiency (β = 0.03, p = 0.04), lower sleep duration (β = 0.03, p = 0.01), and higher global PSQI scores (worse overall sleep) (β = 0.10, p = 0.01). Furthermore, age was determined to have a moderating influence on the relationship between increased concentration of CBD and both better sleep duration and sleep quality (both p < 0.03). Conclusion: Cannabis users have higher expectations of cannabis being a sleep aid, but few associations existed between cannabis use and subjective sleep outcomes with the exceptions of endorsing any cannabis use and frequency of edible use. Additionally, age may be an important moderator of the potential positive influence CBD concentration can have on sleep.

The article presents the research of the problem of sleep quality of students. After the theoretical analysis of the problem of healthy sleep among cadets and students it was defined that these categories of population are one of the most sensitive to sleep problems, because of changing their social status, increasing responsibility, requirements and tense schedule. This problem is also relevant because of the current military-political situation. The article presents the results of empirical research, which shows the difference between the components of sleep quality among cadets and students. It has been found that there are significant differences between cadets and students by such components as «subjective sleep quality», «sleep latency», «sleep duration», «use of sleeping medication», «daytime dysfunction», which show higher results at cadets. There are no significant differences between cadets and students according to the calculated index of interoceptive sensitivity. Average rates for cadets and students are close to high. Also, there was revealed connection between interoceptive sensitivity and subjective quality of sleep, which is defined by a weak negative correlation between these two indicators. In addition, there also were found a strong positive correlation between sleep duration and interoceptive sensitivity and a weak negative correlation between sleep disturbance and interoceptive sensitivity. The received results open up the opportunities to further research such as: a more detailed and volume study of sleep quality, an intensification of the study of connection between interoception, indicators of sleep quality and subjective sleep quality on different samples.

Abstract Introduction Sleep health is linked to dietary choices, and skipping breakfast is associated with risk of negative health outcomes in adolescents. However, there is a lack of research on whether dimensions of sleep at night predict adolescents eating breakfast the next day. We investigated within- and between-person associations of multiple aspects of sleep with adolescent breakfast consumption. Methods Data were collected from a subset of the age 15 wave of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n=590). Teens wore an actigraphy device and completed daily surveys for ~1 week (mean=5.9 days). Surveys assessed subjective sleep quality (low–high) and consumption of breakfast (no/yes). Mixed models assessed whether actigraphy-measured sleep timing (onset, midpoint, and offset) and subjective sleep quality predicted odds of breakfast consumption in both within- and between-person models. A curvilinear association between sleep duration and breakfast consumption was also assessed. Irregularity of sleep duration and timing were tested as additional predictors, calculated as SD per person (in between-person models only). Analyses included random intercepts for participants and covariates: school day, boredom, loneliness, happiness, depressive symptoms, sex, race/ethnicity, body mass index, and household income. Results Within-person analyses revealed a significant curvilinear association between sleep duration and breakfast consumption, such that on nights when teens slept shorter or longer than their average, they had lower odds of eating breakfast the next day (p=.005). Additionally, on nights when teens had a later sleep midpoint or offset than their usual, they tended to skip breakfast the next day (both p&lt;.05). Between-person models showed that teens who on average had later sleep timing (onset, midpoint, and offset) and who reported lower sleep quality had lower odds of eating breakfast (all p&lt;.04). Lastly, teens with greater irregularity of sleep duration and sleep timing (midpoint and offset) had lower odds of eating breakfast (all p&lt;.009). Conclusion Findings indicate that multiple dimensions of adolescent sleep health, including long and short sleep duration, later sleep timing, and poorer sleep quality, are associated with lower odds of eating breakfast.
