Peri- and postnatal mortality of piglets is reported to be around 20% and genetic improvement in piglet survival has great potential benefits in terms of animal welfare, economics and the environment. The indication of an unfavourable genetic correlation between litter size and survival in particular points to the importance of including piglet survival in those pig breeding programmes that currently only aim to increase litter size. Phenotypically, individual birth weight is closely associated with piglet survival (Roehe and Kalm, 2000). Genetic parameters for piglet survival traits and individual birth weight therefore need to be estimated in order to genetically improve piglet survival efficiency

In recent years there has been an increased interest for breeding lambs resistant to gastrointestinal parasites due to the reduced efficacy of anthelminthics. Furthermore, protein supplementation alleviates the adverse effects of parasitism since more protein is available for the satisfaction of the competing body functions of growth and resistance to parasites. Therefore, differences in dietary protein might result in the expression of genotype x environment interaction. Additionally the estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations obtained from populations kept under different nutritional conditions might differ with implications for the breeding programmes. The aim here is to explore the effect of dietary protein level on the estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations of a population of growing lambs infected with gastrointestinal parasites using a simulation model.

The conservation of okra landraces [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench] in gene banks is essential for the success of their use in breeding programmes. This study evaluated the genetic diversity among okra landraces in Brazil based on morphoagronomic descriptors and AFLP markers. We studied 30 accessions of the vegetable gene bank of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. To this end, 17 morphoagronomic descriptors and five combinations of AFLP primers were used. Genetic parameters were estimated for the quantitative traits and the accessions were grouped by Ward’s method, using the Gower’s and Jaccard’s distance measures, respectively, for the morphoagronomic and molecular data. Polymorphisms were observed for all qualitative traits, while the quantitative traits were significant by deviance analysis. The genetic parameters confirmed the existence of variability among accessions, and high accuracy and heritability indices were found for the traits related to fruit and plant height. Ward’s grouping showed no relationship between the clusters formed with the morphoagronomic and molecular data and the geographical origin of the accessions. No association between morphoagronomic descriptors and AFLP markers was observed. The lack of correlation suggests that both approaches of characterization are important to understand and differentiate the okra accessions.

The common point at which lambs are compared is an important aspect of selection programmes for lamb carcase composition. Terminal sire flocks in the Meat and Livestock Commission's (MLC) Sheepbreeder scheme have an estimated breeding value for lean meat production calculated on their lambs at a fixed age, 20 or 21 weeks depending on the breed. However, lambs sold for slaughter from commercial flocks are killed at a commercially acceptable fat cover. In addition, many of the estimates of genetic parameters used to estimate breeding values for carcase characteristics have been calculated at a fixed weight. Little information is available on the relationship between genetic parameters calculated at these three endpoints or the effect of selecting lambs at one endpoint in breeding programmes and using a second endpoint for the slaughter generation. These issues are investigated in this paper.

AbstractThis paper addresses the inheritance of host resistance to gastro-intestinal nematode parasite infections in commercial Texel lambs, and the rôle of resistance to parasites in breeding programmes. In two flocks of Texel sheep, faecal egg counts following natural parasite challenge were measured on up to three occasions post weaning per lamb over a 4-year period, with 1385 and 287 lambs measured on the two farms. Live weight, and ultrasonically measured fat and muscle depth at weaning were available for each lamb, as were deep pedigrees. Egg counts were moderately to strongly heritable on all occasions, with Nematodirus egg counts more heritable than the Strongyle egg counts. Weighted average heritabilities for Strongyle and Nematodirus egg counts were 0.26 and 0.38, respectively. Within the same category of parasite, genetic correlations across time were positive and strong but somewhat less than unity, as were the correlations between Strongyle and Nematodirus egg counts measured at the same time. Genetic correlations between performance traits and Strongyle egg counts were usually favourable (i.e. negative) but weak, whereas those with Nematodirus egg counts were generally neutral or slightly positive. Whilst Nematodirus resistance may not necessarily be included in a breeding goal, the results suggest that Nematodirus egg counts can be used as an additional genetic indicator of Strongyle egg counts, at little extra cost. Including the epidemiological consequences of decreasing Strongyle egg counts in benefits of increasing parasite resistance, it is suggested that under UK conditions selection goals that place equal emphasis on live weight and log-transformed egg counts will be a robust means of improving growth rate and decreasing parasite larval challenge.

The present study was conducted to compare the genetic variability parameters among selfed lines of population A (PDM 53 x PDM 4441) and population B (HKI 1105 x HKI 323) and also random mated population A (PDM 53 x PDM 4441) and random mated population B (HKI 1105 x HKI 323) using original inbred parents and three commercial checks, HM-4 (National check), CPB 468 and TENDER (Private check). High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for number of cobs per plant, husked cob weight, dehusked cob weight, baby corn yield with and without husk per plant among selfed populations and a similar trend was observed in random mated populations except for ear length and days to 50 % silking. In total the variability observed was more in random mated populations than selfed lines because allelic frequency differences occur in random mated populations and the pool of gametes originating from male and female is different when compared to the pollen source in selfed populations. The frequency of transgressive segregants were more in random mated Population A (PDM 53 x PDM 4441) and the most promising transgressive segregant identified can be used in the further breeding programmes.
