This paper questions the nature of the communicative event that takes place in online contexts between doctors and web-users, showing computer-mediated linguistic norms and discussing the nature of the participants’ roles. Based on an analysis of 1005 posts occurring between doctors and the users of health service websites, I analyse how doctor–patient communication is affected by the medium and how health professionals overcome issues concerning the virtual medical visit. Results suggest that (a) online medical answers offer a different service from that expected by users, as doctors cannot always fulfill patient requests, and (b) net consultations use aspects of traditional doctor–patient exchange and yet present a language and a style that are affected by the computer-mediated environment. Additionally, it seems that this new form leads to a different model of doctor–patient relationship. The findings are intended to provide new insights into web-based discourse in doctor–patient communication and to demonstrate the emergence of a new style in medical communication.

Overlapping and interconnected, interdisciplinary and heterogeneous, amorphous and multi-layered, and deep and broad as it is, countless topics on ecoliterature make ecocriticism a comprehensive catchall term that proposes to look at a text--be it social, cultural, political, religious, or scientific--from naturalist perspectives and moves us from “the community of literature to the larger biospheric community which […] we belong to even as we are destroying it” (William Rueckert). As I was in the middle of writing and researching for this article, I was struck by a piece of nature writing by an eleven year old sixth grader born to his (South Asian and American) mixed parents, both affiliated with Johns Hopkins and already proud to belong to the extended family of a Nobel Laureate in Physics. The young boy, Rizwan Thorne-Lyman, wrote, as his science story project, an incredibly beautiful essay, “A Day in the Life of the Amazon Rainforest.” Reading about the rainforest was one of his interests, I was told. In describing the day-long activities of birds and animals among the tall trees and small plants, the 2 pp.-long narrative actually captures the eternally continuing natural cycle of the Amazon. The budding naturalist’s neat classification of the wild life into producers (leafy fruit and flowering plants and trees), consumers (caimans/crocodiles, leafcutter ants, capuchin monkey), predators (macaws, harpy eagles, jaguars, green anaconda), decomposers (worms, fungi and bacteria), parasites (phorid flies) and scavengers (millipedes) was found to be unforgettably impressive. Also the organization of the essay into the Amazon’s mutually benefitting and organically functioning flora and fauna during the day--sunrise, midday, and sunset--was unmistakably striking. I congratulated him as an aspiring environmentalist specializing in rain forest. I encouraged him that he should try to get his essay published in a popular magazine like Reader’s Digest (published did he get in no time indeed![i]) and that he should also read about (and visit) Borneo in Southeast Asia, home to other great biodiverse rainforests of the world. I called him “soft names” as a future Greenpeace and Environmental Protection leader and theorist, a soon-to-be close friend of Al Gore’s. The promising boy’s understanding, however short, of the Amazon ecology and ecosystem and the biological phenomena of its living organisms was really amazing. Chris Milan, Managing Director of Southeastern Region at Tribridge, Inc., was drumming away at the annual “Connect” conference with the company band called “The Bridge.” He enjoyed seeing everyone dancing, laughing, and jamming out to the music and making new friends with coworkers. Tribridge had quickly grown over fifteen years to more than 600 employees with most deployed to customer sites around the U.S. and Canada. The annual conference was a cultural staple designed to re-connect the company with employees and employees with each other. But how much longer could they continue to rely on a once a year event to keep the company together on both social and cultural levels? Chris reflected on a recent executive team meeting where the leaders asked themselves, “How can we keep all of these people, from all over the globe, feeling connected with each other?” The leadership was familiar with and had been discussing ways to keep the company connected through the deployment of an Enterprise Social Network (ESN)--sort of a Facebook for employees. They had been told that an ESN would allow for local employees and remote employees to connect more efficiently to help create an overall cohesive work environment. In theory, it would be a much less expensive approach than flying everyone in to Tampa. And, it was supposed to create a continuous--not just once a year--flow of interactions through an online environment. Plus, wasn’t everyone already familiar with the tool? After all, nearly everyone was on Facebook. Why not set up an ESN and they could join that too? At the same time, the decision to proceed wasn’t easy. There were many factors Milan and the leadership had to consider. Email, Instant Messaging (IM), phone calls and SharePoint were Tribridge’s current forms of communication and connectivity. Would connecting through an ESN replace those platforms? Would it be “in addition to” them? Also, Tribridge was a “Microsoft shop” using Office 365. Office 365 included the ESN platform called Yammer. Would using Yammer be more efficient than email for communication? Would it be as effective as a party for connectivity? Could it share and propagate a culture with a distributed workforce? Since Yammer seemed to be the inevitable choice at Tribridge, maybe the real questions would revolve around how to implement another system in the already busy world that was Tribridge.

The concept of self-regulated learning (SRL) hasn’t been researched enough in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) and hence this study represents an important milestone in understanding this concept in this context. The conducted research was initiated with the presupposition that SRL had a positive impact on satisfaction and academic performance of students. In order to prove the goals of the research, two main hypotheses were formulated. The results of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) have shown that the statements within SRL are grouped into five factors: goal-setting, metacognition, environment structuring, computer self-efficacy and social dimension. Multiple regression analysis proved that 4 of 5 factors have a positive impact on satisfaction and academic performance of students. Only goal-setting yielded no significance on the two aforementioned variables, while remaining four factors showed a significant influence on students’ satisfaction and academic performance.

This chapterdraws attention to a new category of jurisdiction, what we may term ‘scope of jurisdiction’, or ‘scope of remedial jurisdiction’, and explains why this category of jurisdiction is particularly important in the online environment. It thenprovides a coherent framework for how we ought to approach this type of jurisdiction. In doing so, it draws upon experiences from recent cases; in particular, the Google Spain (González) case and the Google Canada (Equustek) case, both of which provide important insights into current practices regarding territoriality in private international law, and perhaps to a lesser extent public international law (as traditionally distinguished).

Interaction is seen by many English language teachers and scholars as an essential part of face-to-face English language classrooms. Teachers require specific competencies to effectively use interaction as a tool for mediating and assisting learning. These can be referred to as classroom interactional competence (CIC). However, the situation created by the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic which began in early 2020, and the recent advancement in technologies have led to teachers conducting synchronous online lessons through video-conferencing software. The online environment is distinctly different from the face-to-face classroom and teachers require new and additional skills to effectively utilise interaction online in real time. This exploratory study used an online mixed-method survey of 75 university level English language teachers who had engaged in synchronous online teaching due to COVID-19, to explore the competencies that teachers need to use interaction as a tool to mediate and assist language learning in synchronous online lessons. Teachers were found to require three competencies, in addition to their CIC – technological competencies, online environment management competencies, and online teacher interactional competencies – which together constitute e-CIC. The findings provide greater insights into the needs of teachers required to teach synchronously online and will be of interest to teachers and teacher educators.
