Using molecular data (nrDNA ITS, cpDNA psbA-trnH), the systematic position of the genus Palimbia in theUmbelliferae was studied. It was shown that Palimbia is a monophyletic taxon and belongs to the clade Pyramidoptereae.Taxa closely related to Palimbia, such as Carum buriaticum and Schulzia, are very different carpologically, but they arecharacterized by finely dissected leaves, which is a very rare trait for the Siberian Umbelliferae.

Molecular data for the mt 16S rDNA gene fragment of a bathynellacean is here presented for the first time and used to analyze the relationship of the group within the crustacean class Malacostraca (Arthropoda, Bathynellacea). Two contrasting views have classified the bathynelids as being either within the order Syncarida or in a separate super-order Podophallocarida belonging to the infra-class Eonomostraca, a disagreement based mainly on debates over external and internal morphology. The preliminary analyses offered here in question the placement of this Bathynellacea within the Syncarida, and suggest the need for a further study of relationships among the malacostracan groups.

Abstract Hemiplectus muscorum, the type and single representative of its genus, is redescribed on the basis of abundant new material collected in the UK, Canada and the USA using both light and scanning electron microscopy. The phylogenetic relationships of the species are inferred from morphological as well as molecular data. Maximum parsimony, neighbour joining and maximum likelihood analyses of small subunit (SSU) rRNA sequences support a position nested among the Plectidae. This conflicts with our morphological assumptions of character polarity, as it implies that the absence of a valvate bulb in Hemiplectus is a reversal rather than a plesiomorphy. The excretory system of Hemiplectus is described more precisely. Its structure is highly reminiscent of the system in Plectus but differs in the presence of an anterior and posterior pair of pseudocoelomocytes flanking the renette cell. A pair of lateral somatic setae is identified as possible homologues of the 'deirids' in Plectus and Rhabditida. Measurements and descriptions are given of all four juvenile stages.

The systematic position of three Apiaceae-Apioideae taxa, Pinacantha porandica, Ladyginia bucharica and Peucedanum mogoltavicum, from Middle Asia and Afghanistan, is clarified based on nrITS DNA sequence data. In the molecular phylogenetic tree, the monotypic Pinacantha is placed in unresolved position within the Ferulinae. Although there is no morphological information on essential characters, we propose a new position of Pinacantha porandica within the genus Ferula. As a result a new combination Ferula porandica is proposed, with a new section Pinacantha to accommodate it. The attribution of Peucedanum mogoltavicum to Ferula has been confirmed, its correct name being Ferula lithophila. The genus Ladyginia should not be included in Ferula, its closest relatives being Mozaffariania and Glaucosciadium from the Glaucosciadium Clade.

Verbascum is one of the main genera of Scrophulariaceae, but delimitation and phylogenetic relationships of this genus are unclear and have not yet been studied using DNA sequences. Here, using four selected molecular markers (nrDNA ITS and the plastid spacers trnS/G, psbA-trnH and trnY/T), we present a phylogeny of Verbascum and test previous infrageneric taxonomic hypotheses as well as its monophyly with respect to Scrophularia. We additionally discuss morphological variation and the utility of morphological characters as predictors of phylogenetic relationships. Our results show that while molecular data unambiguously support the circumscription of Verbascum inferred from morphology, they prove to be of limited utility in resolving infrageneric relationships, suggesting that Verbascum ‘s high species diversity is due to rapid and recent radiation. Our work provides phylogenetic estimation of the genus Verbascum using molecular data and can serve as a starting point for future investigations of Verbascum and relatives.

Phylogenetic relationships were studied based on morphology and nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcript spacer (nrDNA ITS) sequences in 49 populations of 36 Onobrychis taxa belonging to 5 sections (Dendobrychis, Lophobrychis, Onobrychis, Heliobrychis and Hymenobrychis) naturally grown in Turkey. The morphological data (46 quantitative characters) were standardized and submitted for PCA analysis before the performance of hierarchical clustering analysis. In addition, a 577-bp region of the nrDNA ITS sequences was compared to generate a dendrogram using the neighbor-joining method. According to the obtained results, the Onobrychis genus is clearly divided into the Onobrychis and Sisyrosema subgenera both molecularly and morphologically; however, in terms of molecular data, while the Onobrychis subgenus showed polyphyletic features, the Sisyrosema subgenus had monophyletic features. Additionally, long-wing taxa belonging to Dendobrychis and Onobrychis and O. crista-galli belonging to Lophobrychis located in the same clade in Onobrychis showed polyphyletic features. This finding was confirmed in terms of long-wing taxa as well as morphology and indicated that these three sections were entangled with each other under the Onobrychis subgenus.

The muscid genus Ophyra has long been the subject of debate over its placement within the family. However, a phylogenetic study has never been conducted that would clarify its systematic position. In the present paper, phylogenetic relationships are examined between Ophyra albuquerquei and related muscid genera. The mitochondrial genes Cytochrome Oxidase I and II and tRNA-Leu were used combined with the nuclear genes CAD and Elongation Factor 1 to compose a matrix with 2989 characters (716 parsimonyinformative). These characters were analyzed under parsimony resulting in a single most parsimonious tree. Contrary to some recent classifications, our molecular data suggest the placement of Ophyra albuquerquei within the Muscinae in a separate position from the azeliine genus Hydrotaea.

Descriptions of three known species of Cynura, i.e., C. cerambus, C. klunderi and C. papillata, are given, including SEM micrographs of C. cerambus and a tabular compendium for all species of the genus. The phylogenetic relationships of C. klunderi are inferred from molecular data. Bayesian analyses of small subunit (SSU) of rRNA sequences support a position nested among the Plectidae suggesting the secondary simplification in the morphology of pharyngeal valvular apparatus in Cynura and the ‘return’ from a terrestrial to a marine environment in this genus.

We report chromosome counts for ten taxa of Vincetoxicum sensu stricto (s. str.) (Apocynaceae) from Turkey (of which two are endemic), including the first chromosome counts for V. canescens subsp. pedunculata, V. funebre, V. fuscatum subsp. boissieri, V. parviflorum and V. tmoleum. Two taxa of V. fuscatum proved to be tetraploid (2n=44) and the remaining eight taxa diploid (2n=22). Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nrDNA (ITS) and cpDNA (trnT-trnL) (including 31 newly generated sequences) confirm the position of the Turkish Vincetoxicum in the Vincetoxicum s. str. clade. Vincetoxicum fuscatum, V. parviflorum, V. speciosum, as well as the Turkish endemic V. fuscatum subsp. boissieri, were clearly resolved as species-level clades, whereas the delimitation of the rest of the Turkish taxa was less clear based on molecular data.

Nephridiophagids are poorly known unicellular eukaryotes, previously of uncertain systematic position, that parasitize the Malpighian tubules of insects. Their life cycle includes merogony with multinucleate plasmodia and sporogony leading to small, uninucleate spores. We examined the phylogenetic affiliations of three species of Nephridiophaga, including one new species, Nephridiophaga maderae, from the Madeira cockroach (Leucophaea maderae). In addition to the specific host, the new species differs from those already known by the size of the spores and by the number of spores within the sporogenic plasmodium. The inferred phylogenetic analyses strongly support a placement of the nephridiophagids in the fungal kingdom near its root and with a close, but unresolved, relationship to the chytids (Chytridiomycota). We found evidence for the nephridiophagidean speciation as being strongly coupled to host speciation.

A second discovery of the cockscomb oyster associated shrimp species Lacertopontonia chadi is recorded from Sabah (Malaysia). The material is compared with the type description and paratypic material. The systematic position of the genus is reevaluated on the basis of morphological and molecular data focusing on the genera Conchodytes and Chernocaris. It is concluded that Lacertopontonia and Chernocaris fall within the present definition of Conchodytes and should be regarded as synonyms of the latter.
