Games are a proven tool for learning at all ages and in many contexts. They increase the attractiveness of learning processes through arousing interest and enhancing motivation, and aid with the development of social skills. Educational games provide teachers with different approaches to teaching. ‘The Game of the Sea’ is an interdisciplinary board game, specifically designed to teach its players about the marine environment, regardless of their age. Through its 68 sections, coloured according to particular topics and organised as a fish shape, players encounter a wide range of questions and activities. Through playing this game, players acquire a broad knowledge of science, the marine environment and its importance, and literature. The game uses an interdisciplinary approach with question cards on a variety of topics (including maths, physics, biology, chemistry, art, etc.). A total of 222 players (111 children, aged 11–15, and 111 adults, aged 18–72) tested the game. These players were enrolled in different formal and non-formal educational contexts and had different educational backgrounds. For a qualitative analysis of game sessions (participant observation), researchers acted as game moderators and, while doing so, made subtle observations of players playing the game. On top of this, the value of the game, as a didactic tool, was evaluated with a test that players took before and after the game. After playing the game, knowledge of the marine environment, increased in both children and adults, with a slightly higher increase in children. Therefore, ‘The Game of the Sea’ is suitable for teaching all ages about the marine environment. Further, this game can impart to its players the importance of the marine environment and the importance of protecting this environment.

Bedding-parallel fibrous calcite veins crop out at two Permian carbonate localities in the Phetchabun area, central Thailand, within the Nam Duk and Khao Khwang Formations. Samples are studied to determine their petrographic, geochemical and isotopic character, depositional and diagenetic associations and controls on the formation of fibrous calcite across the region. Biomarker and non-biomarker parameters are used to interpret organic matter sources in the vein-hosting units, the depositional environment and levels of source rock maturation in order to evaluate source rock potential in the two Formations. Carbon and oxygen isotope values of the veins and the host are determined to discuss the source of carbonates and diagenetic conditions. The petroleum assessment from the Khao Khwang and Nam Duk Formations suggests that both Formations are a petroleum potential source rock with type II/III kerogen deposited in an estuarine environment or a shallow marine environment and a slope-to-basin marine environment or an open marine environment, respectively. The bedding-parallel fibrous calcite veins from the Khao Khwang and Nam Duk Formations are divided into two types: 1) beef and, 2) cone-in-cone veins. The carbon and oxygen isotope compositions from the fibrous calcite veins suggest that the calcite veins could be precipitated from a carbon source generated in the microbial methanogenic zone. The results in this study provide a better understanding of the interrelationship between the bedding-parallel fibrous calcite veins and petroleum source rock potential.

Since the e-Navigation strategy was put forward, various countries and regions in the world have researched e-Navigation test platforms. However, the sources of navigation data are multi-source, and there are still difficulties in the unified acquisition, processing, analysis and application of multi-source data. Users often find it difficult to obtain the required comprehensive navigation information. The purpose of this paper is to use e-Navigation architecture to design and develop maritime data security management platform, strengthen navigation safety guarantee, strengthen Marine environment monitoring, share navigation and safety information, improve the ability of shipping transportation organizations in ports, and protect the marine environment. Therefore, this paper proposes a four-layer system architecture based on Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology, and designs a unified maritime data storage, analysis and management platform, which realizes the intelligent, visualized and modular management of maritime data at shipside and the shore. This platform can provide comprehensive data resource services for ship navigation and support the analysis and mining of maritime big data. This paper expounds on the design, development scheme and demonstration operation scheme of the maritime data security management platform from the system structure and data exchange mode.
