Advances in science and technology have influenced designing activity in architecture throughout its history. Observing the fundamental changes to architectural designing due to the substantial influences of the advent of the computing era, we now witness our design environment gradually changing from conventional pencil and paper to digital multi-media. Although designing is considered to be a unique human activity, there has always been a great dependency on design aid tools. One of the greatest aids to architectural design, amongst the many conventional and widely accepted computational tools, is the computer-aided object modeling and rendering tool, commonly known as a CAD package. But even though conventional modeling tools have provided designers with fast and precise object handling capabilities that were not available in the pencil-and-paper age, they normally show weaknesses and limitations in covering the whole design process.In any kind of design activity, the design worked on has to be represented in some way. For a human designer, designs are for example represented using models, drawings, or verbal descriptions. If a computer is used for design work, designs are usually represented by groups of pixels (paintbrush programs), lines and shapes (general-purpose CAD programs) or higher-level objects like ‘walls’ and ‘rooms’ (purpose-specific CAD programs).A human designer usually has a large number of representations available, and can use the representation most suitable for what he or she is working on. Humans can also introduce new representations and thereby represent objects that are not part of the world they experience with their sensory organs, for example vector representations of four and five dimensional objects. In design computing on the other hand, the representation or representations used have to be explicitly defined. Many different representations have been suggested, often optimized for specific design domains or design methods, but each individual computational design system has only one or very few different representations available.Whatever the choice of the representation, it is likely to influence the outcome of the design process. In any representation, some designs may be more difficult to represent than others, and some designs may not be representable at all.The same applies if the design process is implemented in a computer program. If a design cannot be represented with a given representation, it cannot be the outcome of a design process using this representation. As is the case for human designers, it is also possible that the representation influences a computational design process such that it is easier for the program to find some designs than others. Depending on the design process used, this might make those designs a more likely outcome of the design process. This is for example the case with stochastic optimization processes, like evolutionary systems and simulated annealing. In these cases, the representation is likely to introduce a bias into the design process.The selection of the representation is therefore of high importance in the development of a computational design system. Obviously, while choosing the representation the programmer has to ensure that all or as many as possible potentially ‘interesting’ designs can be represented. But it is also generally desirable to minimize the bias introduced by the representation. In contrast to the user-provided design criteria, the bias caused by the representation influences the outcome of the design process in an implicit way which is not obvious to the user, and is difficult to predict and control.The idea developed in this research is that it is possible to turn the bias caused by the representation into a virtue, by deliberately choosing or modifying the representation to influence the design process in a certain desired way. The resulting ‘focusing’ of the search process is connected to the idea of ‘expansion of search spaces’, a notion used in some definitions of computational creativity. Both ‘focusing’ and ‘expansion of search space’ will be explored in this research.

Today’s design environment has become more distributed and professional. Efficient design management can greatly improve the ability of a company’s competition. To increase efficiency of a design process coordination of Computer-Aided Design and Analysis tools are very important, especially for large complicated systems. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a requirement driven system. Design process usually involves fulfillment of requirements from top-end customer. Adopting requirement driven mechanisms will provide more convenience for design coordination automation and help us find the most resource saving solutions for specific product design. A CORBA framework is discussed to facilitate the implementation of methodologies for requirement driven design coordination. System architecture and modules for the framework are introduced to support a requirement publishing and responding service. Distribution of the tasks is determined by “stigmergy” algorithm, which makes the decision using the performance history of each team and designers. An example of a coffeemaker product design based on the framework, is presented to demonstrate the application of new design system.

PurposeThis research investigates the means of tacit knowledge (TK) communication between the designer and the computer in architectural design. Despite the integration of state-of-the-art computational technologies in different design phases, this integration happens within a limited scope, focusing mainly on tangible aspects of the design process, such as technical systems and visual representations. This lets architectural design miss the wider scope technology provides, where it can help in developing the computational design process through incorporating new intangible knowledge domains that were usually neglected, such as tacit knowledge, and through incorporating more design entities that were not included in the design process before.Design/methodology/approachThe study conducts an interdisciplinary analytical review of the literature to achieve two main research goals. The first goal investigates TK communication between human beings and the second understands approaches of TK communication between humans and computers. For each goal, three phases were implemented; an initial research phase, where main keywords are identified, a sampling and selection of literature phase and an analysis of literature phase.FindingsThrough interlinking findings from different disciplines, the study presents a theoretical framework for TK communication. The framework provides architects with an approach to construct and transfer TK while using the computer in a computational design environment, presenting an individual and a social set of conditions and factors revealed from the review of the analyzed literature. The framework particularly emphasizes the significance of a human–computer symbiotic relationship for the process of TK communication to take place.Originality/valueThis paper presents a novel interdisciplinary reading into the literature of fields beyond architectural design, incorporating intangible knowledge domains into the computational design process and expanding the capabilities of computational design tools to allow for the transfer of intangible design attributes between different design entities, particularly tacit design knowledge.

Abstract Shape modeling plays a vital role in the design process but often it is the most tedious task in the whole design cycle. In recent years the Computer Aided Design (CAD) industry has evolved through a number of advances and developments in design methodology. However, modeling in these CAD systems requires expertise and in-depth understanding of the modeling process, user interface and the CAD system itself, resulting in increased design cycle time. To overcome these problems a new methodology and a system called “Detailed Virtual Design System” (DVDS) has been developed for detailed shape modeling in a multi-modal, multi-sensory Virtual Environment (VE). This system provides an intuitive and natural way of designing using hand motions, gestures and voice commands. Due to the lack of effective collaborative design, visualization and analysis tools, designers spend a considerable amount of time and effort in the group discussion during design process. To enable multiple designers to effectively and efficiently collaborate in a design environment, framework of a collaborative virtual environment, called “Virtual Environment to Virtual Environment” (V2V), has been discussed. This framework allows same site and remote site multi-modal, multi-sensory immersive interface between designers.

Digital industrial design system combines the digital technology and industrial design process,and integrates the sub-systems of digital modeling, digital assemble, digital evaluation, digital manufacture, and digital information exchange. In order to let the industrial design work process and the design data flowing fluently around such sub-systems, Product Data Management (PDM) system is introduced here as the basic integration platform of the sub-systems to let the design process flow and design data flow working well. The product digital industrial design platform basic functions and its system structure is analyzed, and a general model and function frame of product data management system oriented to digital industrial design is presented in this paper to solve its characteristic data composition, integrative method of application software and industrial design flow in the process of the digital industrial design. Results about the working process integrative model, control process model, product class definition model, and the logical structure of the digital industrial design platform with the PDM system are also established. An application results for certain product development show that such digital industry design system can make the helps for the design work efficiency and the follow-up engineering design accuracy.

Using rhetorical genre theory, the authors theorize the engineering design process as a type of embodied genre enacted through typified performances of bodies engaged with discourses, texts, and objects in genre-rich spaces of design activity. The authors illustrate this through an analysis of ethnographic data from an engineering design course to show how a genred repertoire of embodied routines is demonstrated for students and later taken up as part of their design work. A greater appreciation of the interconnection between genre and design as well as the role of typification in producing embodied genres can potentially transform how writing studies conceive of and teach both design processes and genres in technical and professional communication settings.

In order to realize information sharing and interchange of complex product multidisciplinary collaborative design (MCD) design process and resources. The Process integrated system control of product multidisciplinary collaborative design was analyzed firstly in this paper, then design process of complex product for supporting multidisciplinary collaborative was introduced, a detailed description is given of the organization structure and modeling process of MCD-oriented Integration of Product Design Meta-model ; and concrete implement process of process integrated system control method was introduced to effectively realize information sharing and interchange between product design process and resources.

Art of animation as an analysis of movement is based on the theory that the vision remains on the eye after the disappearance of the actual image, and this scientific theory is the same that the film industry was built upon. Recently, various techniques and ideas have entered the print design process as a means of expressing a phenomenon subject to the human will to change and elevate our aesthetic awareness and feelings, which rise in various forms of designs that reveal themselves in design work and are embodied in animation films. The design artwork falls within a group of intertwined elements fused with each other, reflecting the peculiarity of this work, as it is innovation and creating new and interesting things, so that the design is suitable for the desired purpose and beautifully. Perhaps the simplest type of optical illusion that can clarify to us the idea of the impression of the existence of an image that does not actually exist is represented in the decree paper. Abstract This paper presents a summary of research into the development and implementation of a domain independent, computer-based model for the conceptual design of complex mechanical systems (Ouellette, 1992). The creation of such a design model includes the integration of four major concepts: (1) The use of a graphical display for visualizing the conceptual design attributes; (2) The proper representation of the complex data and diverse knowledge required to design the system; (3) The integration of quality design methods into the conceptual design; and (4) The modeling of the conceptual design process as a mapping between functions and forms. Using the design of an automobile as a case study, a design environment was created which consisted of a distributed problem solving paradigm and a parametric graphical display. The requirements of the design problem with respect to data representation and design processing were evaluated and a process model was specified. The resulting vehicle design system consists of a tight integration between a blackboard system and a parametric design system. The completed system allows a designer to view graphical representations of the candidate conceptual designs that the blackboard system generates.

Abstract A Framework of computational design method and model is proposed for layout and geometry design of complicated mechanical systems, which is named “configuration network and its viewing control”. In the method, a design object is represented with a set of declarative relationships among various elements of a system, that is, configurations, which is gradually extended from schematic structure to exact layout and geometry through design process. Since a whole of such configurations forms a too complicated network to compute all together, how to view subparts is controlled based on levels of granularity and width of scope range. Such a configuration network is made to grow and refined through embodying geometry and layout corresponding to a focused subpart with a numerical optimization procedure. The framework has also an ability to flexibly integrate with engineering analysis. Moreover, a design system is implemented with an object-oriented programming technique, and it is applied to a design problem of air conditioner units in order to show the validity and effectiveness of the framework.

This paper presents the impeller design system developed at Dresser-Rand using Bezier polynomials in cylindrical coordinates. A discussion of the basic techniques utilized in the code is presented as are sample graphic outputs generated to aid the user in the design process. The paper also describes some of the output options and how results may be interfaced with other analytical, drafting, and manufacturing software. Comments are included regarding the increased productivity, accuracy, and quality which resulted directly from use of this code and its support routines.
