Epilepsy is a prevalent condition, mainly affecting the nervous system of the human body. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is used to evaluate and examine the seizures caused due to epilepsy. The issue of low precision and poor comprehensiveness is worked upon using dual tree- complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT), rather than discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Here, Logarithmic energy entropy (LogEn) and Shannon entropy (ShanEn) are taken as input features. These features are fed to Linear Support Vector Machine     (L-SVM) Classifier. For LogEn, accuracy of 100% for A-E, 99.34% for AB-E, and 98.67% for AC-E is achieved. While ShanEn combinations give accuracy of 96.67% for AB-E and 95.5% for ABC-E. These results showcase that our methodology is suitable for overcoming the problem and can become an alternate option for clinical diagnosis.

This chapter gives an effective and efficient technique that can detect epilepsy in real time. It is low cost, low power, and real-time devices that can easily detect epilepsy. Along with EEG device, one can upgrade with GSM module to alert the doctors and parents of patients about its occurrence to prevent a sudden fall, which may cause injury and death. The accuracy of this EEG device depends on the quality of feature extraction technique and classification algorithm. In this chapter, support vector machine (SVM) is used as a classifier. Wavelet transform gives feature extraction, which helps to train data and to detect normal or seizure patients. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) decomposes the signals into three decomposition levels. In this detection, mean, median, and non-linear parameter entropy were calculated for every sub-band as key parameters. The extracted features are then applied to SVM classifier for the classification. Better accuracy of classification is obtained using wavelet and SVM classifier.

Dyslexia is referred as learning disability that causes learner having difficulties in decoding, reading and writing words. This disability associates with learning processing region in the human brain. Activities in this region can be examined using electroencephalogram (EEG) which record electrical activity during learning process. This study looks into performance of Support Vector Machine (SVM) using RBF kernel in classifying EEG signal of Normal, Poor and Capable Dyslexic children during writing words and non-words. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) with Daubechies order 2 was employed to extract the power of beta and theta waves of EEG signal. Beta and Theta/Beta ratio form the input features for classifier.  Multiclass one versus one SVM was used in the classification where RBF kernel parameters and box constraint values were varied with the factor of 10 to analyze performance of the classifier. It was found that the best performance of SVM with 91% overall accuracy was obtained when both kernel scale and box constraint are set to one.

This study investigates a novel method for roller bearing fault diagnosis based on local characteristic-scale decomposition (LCD) energy entropy, together with a support vector machine designed using an Artificial Chemical Reaction Optimisation Algorithm, referred to as an ACROA-SVM. First, the original acceleration vibration signals are decomposed into intrinsic scale components (ISCs). Second, the concept of LCD energy entropy is introduced. Third, the energy features extracted from a number of ISCs that contain the most dominant fault information serve as input vectors for the support vector machine classifier. Finally, the ACROA-SVM classifier is proposed to recognize the faulty roller bearing pattern. The analysis of roller bearing signals with inner-race and outer-race faults shows that the diagnostic approach based on the ACROA-SVM and using LCD to extract the energy levels of the various frequency bands as features can identify roller bearing fault patterns accurately and effectively. The proposed method is superior to approaches based on Empirical Mode Decomposition method and requires less time.

The monitoring of power quality (PQ) disturbances in a systematic and automated way is an important issue to prevent detrimental effects on power system. The development of new methods for the automatic recognition of single and hybrid PQ disturbances is at present a major concern. This paper presents a combined approach of wavelet transform based support vector machine (WT-SVM) for the automatic classification of single and hybrid PQ disturbances. The proposed approach is applied by using synthetic models of various single and hybrid PQ signals. The suitable features of the PQ waveforms were first extracted by using discrete wavelet transform. Then SVM classifies the type of PQ disturbances based on these features. The classification performance of the proposed algorithm is also compared with wavelet based radial basis function neural network, probabilistic neural network and feed-forward neural network. The experimental results show that the recognition rate of the proposed WT-SVM based classification system is more accurate and much better than the other classifiers.

The surface appearance is sensitive to change in the manufacturing process and is one of the most important product quality characteristics. The classification of workpiece surface patterns is critical for quality control, because it can provide feedback on the manufacturing process. In this study, a novel classification approach for engineering surfaces is proposed by combining dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) and selective ensemble classifiers called modified matching pursuit optimization with multiclass support vector machines ensemble (MPO-SVME), which adopts support vector machine (SVM) as basic classifiers. The dual-tree wavelet transform is used to decompose three-dimensional (3D) workpiece surfaces, and the features of workpiece surface are extracted from wavelet sub-bands of each level. Then MPO-SVME is developed to classify different workpiece surfaces based on the extracted features and the performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by computing its classification accuracy. The performance of MPO-SVME is validated in case study, and the results demonstrate that MPO-SVME can increase the classification accuracy with only a handful of selected classifiers.
