In recent years, data has shown that there has been significant growth in Asian American Pacific Islander-owned (AAPI) enterprises. Driven by demographic changes, related in large part to the history of immigration policy, the AAPI population has been growing, and this has been accompanied by AAPI innovators and entrepreneurs leaving greater marks on American society and the U.S. economy. This growth, however, is not without risks and threats. The legacy of being “othered” by mainstream society means that AAPI success in business and in the corporate landscape can be met with resentment and criticism. This article explores the history of AAPI entrepreneurship and current trends. It also examines the challenges that the community may continue to face and offers recommendations on how to ensure continued growth and expanded opportunities for AAPIs in business.

Between 1908 and 1909 and in 1912, Vancouver-based journalist Shohei Osada published a two-part series entitled “Exploration of Devil Caves” in a local Japanese language newspaper, detailing the lives of Japanese migrants involved in the sex trade in Canada. The series showcases the presence of underground networks that extended across the continent and the Pacific, or what I call the “transpacific underground.” Many characters in Osada’s series are transient migrants, who did not settle in any one specific nation but continued moving on across multiple borders seeking new opportunities, or sometimes, last resort for survival. By reading Osada’s writing closely, this article develops the notion of the transpacific underground as method to engage the history of migrant sex workers and understand it from a carceral space of migration regulated by multiple imperial and colonial forces, gendered nationalist ideologies, and human trafficking, making migrant women’s movements forced but also transgressive and open-ended.

The Japanese language was greatly influenced by changes of the society andpolitics under the Meiji 明治 Restoration. In this period three new sets oflanguage material became available: stenographic records, audio materialsand newspapers, as well as magazines. The Japanese stenography is basedon English stenography, and its actual implementation began from 1883. Thestenographic records are speeches, lectures, minutes and records of rakugo落語 and kōdan 講談. In the research of the history of Japanese language, stenographic records of rakugo, kōdan and speeches are often used. The rakugo and kōdan materials are large in extent, about 4000 items are known;however, the quantity of speeches and other stenographic records are unknown; therefore, a bibliographic research is necessary in this respect.

The article emphasizes that the History of Ukrainian Culture is a component of the humanitarian cycle of disciplines; that a successful use of region-related history materials in the course of its teaching is ensured due to their cross-curricular nature; these materials increase learning motivation. It is noted that the discipline “History of Ukrainian Culture” combines the study of culture history and current trends of socio-cultural development of society in the context of globalization and modernization. It is aimed at developing students’ intention to get involved into the native culture, to respect a person as the main value, regardless of nationality, religion, place of residence. The development regularities of the Ukrainian culture in the context of socio-historical circumstances as well as the panorama of national and world cultural processes and their main stages, specific phenomena of the national Ukrainian culture are the object of the course studies. The experience has shown that appealing to the origins and current state of Ukrainian culture, especially taking into consideration the regional component, arouses keen interest of education seekers. The acquired knowledge remains in memory, performs educational function, arouses further interest in learning the history, culture and traditions of the native land. One can say without any exaggeration that knowledge of the culture history of your own people, your country, and your native land enhances personality, forms values, and cultivates dignity in man. It is assumed that the use of region-related history materials at lectures and seminars makes it possible to talk more convincingly, illustratively, vividly about the major milestones in the history of both national and world culture, contributes to the patriotic upbringing of students. At present, the issues related to scientific and methodological substantiation of the use of the region-oriented materials in teaching the History of Ukrainian culture in order to generate the culture of patriotism seem to be topical.

YouTube is more than cute pet videos and aspiring musicians. Fully understanding YouTube and how it influences, reproduces, and changes our culture begins with accepting the role of media technologies inside and outside of YouTube. The history of the Internet and its core technologies provides one foundational proposition in this book. Two other propositions, regarding YouTube's reliance on Internet-based technology and historically relevant communication theories, specifically Cultural Studies and Medium Theory, are discussed, as well. In consideration of important historical and theoretical perspectives, YouTube is transformed in our minds from a simple user-generated content repository to a cultural change agent. The tools and technology associated with the Internet, richly integrated and manifest in YouTube, allow us to change the world around us. Understanding the function and design of Internet-specific technology and how we experience social networking can contextualize current trends and influences in our daily online experience. Essential to our understanding and ultimately our power over the technology that we create (in this case, YouTube) is informed through understanding the technologies presented as part of our shared history. Finally, grasping the technological concepts and terminology reveals a deeper perspective on our cultural and participatory experience with the Internet and YouTube far beyond cute pet videos.
