Timothy: Preparing for The Holy Eucharist within the Community when Communication is Non-verbal

AbstractPersons with intellectual disabilities are still regularly refused access to the Eucharist, as illustrated in an article in the Washington Post. Although Pope Francis and several Bishops’ Conferences and the new Directory for Catechesis (n°269–272) have made it clear that Catholics with disabilities have a right to participate in the sacraments as all other members of the ecclesial community, many church leaders still refrain from allowing persons with profound intellectual disabilities to access the Eucharist. This article investigates the experience of a pastoral team that prepared First Communion of a young boy with profound intellectual disabilities. The experience raised practical theological, pedagogical and pastoral ecclesial issues to be solved. These issues structure the article.

Although the encyclical of Pope Francis Fratelli tutti does not speak directly about ecumenism, the category of fraternity developed in it can and should apply in the ecumenical movement, especially in the grassroots contacts of Christians from different Churches. Top-down ecumenism, i.e. doctrinal dialogues and meetings of Church leaders, by themselves – although necessary – are not able to bring about an effective reconciliation of Christians living in different Churches and Ecclesial Communities. The hermeneutical key proposed by Pope Francis in the form of the category of the fraternity has a wider application than ecumenical relations. The article examines the determinants of this category and its possible application to the ecumenical movement. An example of the successful application of the idea of fraternity in the activities of the International Ecumenical Fellowship is also given.

Today's youth ministry is a ministry that has very different challenges and struggles than the youth ministry in the previous decade. The need for leaders in the service of young people today is needed so that youth services can be strong. Through a qualitative review of the literature using a practical theological research method that will discuss the role of church leaders in the leadership of youth ministry today. The purpose of this research is expected to open new understanding for church leaders to build and guide young people to become leaders for youth ministry. The benefit of this research is that the presence of young people in the church is well served to grow prospective young leaders who bring glory to the name of the Lord Jesus. Found several things that must be done by church leaders in building and guiding young people to be leaders in youth ministry are: First, as a spiritual guide. Second, as a pilot model followed. Third, the personal example of having the love of Jesus Christ and loving others. Fourth, inspire young people to give dedication to Jesus Christ and Fifth, to encourage spiritual growth and character. Pelayanan kaum muda pada masa kini merupakan pelayanan yang memiliki tantangan dan pergumulan yang amat berbeda dibandingkan pelayanan kaum muda dalam dekade sebelumnya. Kebutuhan terhadap para pemimpin dalam pelayanan kaum muda masa kini sangat dibutuhkan agar pelayanan anak muda dapat menjadi kuat. Melalui kajian kualitatif literatur menggunakan metode penelitian teologi praktika yang akan membahas peran pemimpin gereja dalam kepemimpinan pelayanan kaum muda masa kini. Tujuan penelitian ini diharapkan membuka pengertian baru bagi para pemimpin gereja untuk membangun dan membimbing kaum muda untuk menjadi para pemimpin bagi pelayanan kaum muda. Manfaat penelitian ini adalah agar keberadaan kaum muda di gereja terlayani dengan baik sehingga menumbuhkan calon pemimpin kaum muda yang membawa kemuliaan bagi nama Tuhan Yesus. Didapati beberapa hal yang harus dilakukan para pemimpin gereja dalam membangun dan membimbing para kaum muda menjadi pemimpin dalam pelayanan kaum muda adalah : Pertama, sebagai pembimbing rohani. Kedua, sebagai model percontohan yang diiikuti. Ketiga, contoh pribadi yang memiliki kasih Yesus Kristus dan mengasihi sesama. Keempat, menginspirasi kaum muda dalam memberi dedikasi kepada Yesus Kristus dan kelima, pendorong pertumbuhan rohani dan karakter.

During the past 30 years the Catholic bishops of the United States have captured the national headlines with their statements on nuclear disarmament and economic justice, their struggles to address sexual abuse by clergy, their concerns about abortion and religious freedom, and their defense of refugees and immigrants. The nearly 200 bishops leading local dioceses, though, are a varied mix of Church leaders. In 2016 all of the bishops were surveyed with an eye to better understanding who are the bishops as individuals (their background, education, and experiences), what are their day-to-day activities, their challenges and satisfactions as Church leaders, how they manage their dioceses, and how they speak out on public issues. The data are enriched by frequent quotes and anecdotes from the interviewed bishops. During the past 25 years the Church has gone from Pope John Paul II to Benedict XVI to Pope Francis, and the Catholic Church in the United States, along with its bishops, are dramatically different. The bishops of the United States have had their leadership tested by the sex abuse scandals, the movement of Catholics from the Northeast and Midwest to the South and West, and the arrival of more Catholic immigrants than they have seen in a century along with the ongoing decline in the number of priests and sisters serving the Catholic community. This book provides a unique and comprehensive view of who the bishops are, where they are from, and how they are leading the Church in the United States in the era of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of embracing the universal call to be “missionary disciples.” In calling for the 2018 Synod of Bishops on the theme of young people, he highlighted the need for church leaders to renew their understanding of and approach to young people as they discern how to embrace their call to be missionary disciples. The final document of the synod reveals that many church leaders still do not understand the pope’s vision or the reality of young adults. To overcome this interpretative bias, church leaders must reconstitute their worldview and embrace the decolonial option.

Abstract This article reports the findings of a practical Theological Action Research project in a Church of England diocese in the UK, using photo elicitation. This image-based approach resulted in findings that echoed existing diocesan strategies, but also highlighted other issues that may otherwise have remained implicit, specifically the mode of mission and concerns regarding growth and survival. The visual data itself is analysed, revealing that the images do not always function as direct signifiers, but instead were generating creative, intuited responses. From the data, four mirrors were developed to reflect back to the groups their responses. This approach enabled local strategies to emerge from within espoused theologies, but also to make explicit their coherence or departure from the normative missiologies of the diocese. Finally, the authors suggest that the exposure of church leaders within training to qualitative research methodologies is releasing a new kind of leadership to emerge.

The literature recognizes the important role of the Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) in the treatment of communication and swallowing disorders in children with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). However there is also a need to emphasize the importance of specialist SLP input across the lifespan of people with ID, and to recognize the specific, ongoing and changing communication and swallowing needs of adults with ID as they get older.
