Abstract An attempt to provide a procedure for the assessment of the efficiency of various regional systems for the purposes of spatial analysis is presented in this paper. Functional regions as well as approximated functional regions and the existing administrative regions in the Czech Republic are evaluated, as examples of regional systems to be compared and assessed. Functional regions and approximated functional regions are defined according to the adjusted third variant of the CURDS regionalisation algorithm, using the latest knowledge on the operation of the constraint function. The comparisons of individual regional systems are based on LISA maps and particularly on the assessment of regional variability, including the measures of internal homogeneity and external variability in the regional systems.

Abstract The definition of functional meso regions for the territory of the Czech Republic is articulated in this article. Functional regions reflect horizontal interactions in space and are presented as a useful tool for various types of geographical analyses, and also for spatial planning, economic policy designs, etc. This paper attempts to add to the discussion on the need to delineate areal units at different hierarchical levels, and to understand the functional flows and spatial behaviours of the population in a given space. Three agglomerative methods are applied in the paper (the CURDS regionalisation algorithm, Intramax, and cluster analysis), and they have not been used previously in Czech geography for the delineation of functional meso regions. Existing functional regions at the micro-level, based on daily travel-to-work flows from the 2001 census, have served as the building blocks. The analyses have produced five regional systems at the meso level, based on daily labour commuting movements of the population. Basic statistics and a characterisation of these systems are provided in this paper.

Using a wide scale of indicators (economic, social and demographic) and different statistical methods for measuring variability (coefficient of variation, Gini's coefficient, Theil's index and standard deviation) this article tries to describe the evolution of regional variability during the 1990s in the Czech Republic in the context of long-term trends. Special attention is paid to a comparison of the variability figures in the 1990s with those in the 1920s and 1930s. An evaluation of the suitability of different indexes used in measuring regional variability is also made. The analysis proves that contemporary regional differentiation in the Czech Republic is not exceptional from the long-term perspective. The article also discusses the influence of the vertical and horizontal position of the regions on the success of their development in this respect. A brief international comparison at the end shows the position of Czech regional disparities within the group of EU countries.

Abstract The issue of defining functional regions in the Czech Republic is presented in this paper, which contributes to both theoretical discussions (e.g. the modifiable areal unit problem) and practical applications (e.g. spatial administration, regional planning). A multistage agglomerative approach to functional regional taxonomy is applied, which has been used in Czech geographical research for the first time only recently. The regionalisation algorithm provided four optional solutions for this issue, based on the analysis of daily travel-to-work flows from the 2001 census. The resulting regions correspond to the micro-regional level and two additional tiers were identified at this level. The basic statistics for all variants are presented.

The acceleration of urbanization in developed countries in the 20thcentury has become during last 50 years a global phenomenon bringing many challenges. Relations between city and its surroundings have been consequently evolved by many essential changes. In post-socialistic countries the development of urbanization was affected by specific factors which influence – on the basis of historical memory – creating of functional regions. The subject of this paper is to discuss that the formal or informal institutionalization of metropolitan areas in the Czech Republic (covering the delimitation of metropolitan area or a consequent anchoring of metropolitan areas in the process of spatial planning), may be advantageous even from an economic point of view for all stakeholders.

The article focuses at problems of size differentiation of Czech municipalities with special regard to small municipalities. The question of "size" and regional variability of size differentiation is discussed. The difference between political and economic aspects in search for optimal size of municipalities is stressed. The concept of a two-tier organization of local administration is formulated in the conclusion.
