Macrozoobenthic community structure of İğneada region in Turkey (the southwestern Black Sea)

AbstractThe present study deals with macrozoobenthic species on soft substrates in İğneada (Turkish coast of the Black Sea). Benthic samples were collected seasonally at three stations between 2012 and 2013. A total of 155 species belonging to seven taxa (Turbellaria, Nemertea, Nematoda, Oligochaeta, Polychaeta, Crustacea, Phoronida, Mollusca, Hemichordata) were identified. Of these, four species are new records for the Black Sea fauna, 15 species are new to the Turkish coast of the Black Sea; and two species are new to the Turkish Seas. Polychaeta was the most representative taxon in the study area – it was represented by 58 species (39% of the total number of species). In terms of the number of individuals, Mollusca were the dominant taxon in all seasons (82% of the total number of individuals). The most dominant species were

Abstract It is becoming increasingly important to monitor zoobenthic biodiversity in seas that are under industrial and anthropogenic pollution pressure, such as the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea. This study covers crustacean species in the Turkish waters of the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, both of which are closed systems. Sampling was carried out in July–August 2019 and yielded 32 crustacean species from the Black Sea and 77 species from the Marmara Sea. In the Marmara Sea, two species [Kupellonura mediterranea and Leucon (Macrauloleucon) siphonatus] represent new records for the Turkish waters, and 12 species [Cirolana cranchii, Cumella (Cumella) pygmaea, Cyathura carinata, Cymodoce truncata, Eurydice pulchra, Gammaropsis sophiae, Harpinia truncata, Iphinoe serrata, Iphinoe trispinosa, Liocarcinus pusillus, Nebalia strausi and Synchelidium maculatum] are new to the Marmara Sea. The following species: Gammaropsis palmata, Pontocrates arenarius, and Synchelidium haplocheles are new records for the Black Sea. The order Amphipoda dominated in both seas in terms of the number of species and the number of individuals.

This study was carried out to determine the amphipod fauna in Mar Piccolo, Mar Grande and the Gulf of Taranto. Material in this study was obtained from 96 stations at different depths (maximum depth: −50 m) using various methods depending on the substrata. A total of 65 species was determined and 25 species are new records in the seas of Taranto. Microdeutopus gryllotalpa, Ericthonius brasiliensis, Monocorophium insidiosum, Elasmopus rapax, Gammarus aequicauda, Gammarus insensibilis, Leucothoe spinicarpa, Lysianassa costae and Pseudoprotella phasma were the dominant species and have been found in all areas considered. The comparison of the data shows that the area examined presents a high difference regarding biocenotic index. The highest number of species was collected in the Gulf with 1944 individuals, belonging to 58 species and 19 families, followed by Mar Grande with 1448 individuals belonging to 36 species and 11 families; finally Mar Piccolo with 698 individuals, 12 species and 6 families, in the First Inlet and 546 individuals, 18 species and 6 families, in the Second Inlet.

According to a survey of benthos in the Laoting sea area of Hebei Province on May 24th 2019, a total of 40 benthos species were obtained, of which mollusks have the largest number, followed by annelids and arthropods. The dominant species are Sternaspis sculata and Ringicula doliaris. The number of species obtained in this survey is much lower than the historical average. The diversity index is significantly lower than that in the April 2008 survey, and the evenness index and richness index have declined slightly, indicating that the benthic community structure in this sea area tends to be simplistic, stability tends to deteriorate.

Thirteen new records of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus (Rathbun, 1896) have been documented near the Bulgarian Black Sea coast since 2006. This is an evidence for a recent expansion of the species in this part of the Black Sea. This expansion could be explained by the existing of established population in the area and is confirmed by the capturing of an egg-bearing female in the Varna Bay in 2005.

Spatial and temporal distribution of benthic communities around the Strait of Istanbul (Bosphorus) and the effect of lower layer discharge on these communities have been evaluated during studies between FebruaryÐDecember 1999. Mytilus galloprovincialis was the dominant species with fasies at the Black Sea station that is not affected by the strait lower layer current system. On the other hand, another Black Sea station, influenced by the strait lower layer currents, has a similar biota to the strait stations. Species richness and diversity is highest in the strait than other areas. The dominant species is Maera grossimana. However, the station located at the Black Sea exit of the strait has a different biota, and various groups/species appeared to be dominant. Melinna palmata is the dominant species at the Sea of Marmara during the study period. Low dissolved oxygen values of lower layer and soft substratum of sediment resulted in wide distribution of Melinna palmata, adapted to these conditions. The closer stations to the strait in the Sea of Marmara have higher diversity as a result of hydrodynamic processes. On the other hand, coastal stations with low currents and inputs have lower index values, showing the negative effect of discharges and pollution.

Between October 2013 and July 2014, 40 polyclad specimens were collected during the systematic sampling of mussel beds along the coast of the Sinop Peninsula (Western Black Sea). Six species were identified, including a new Cryptocelis species. Cryptocelis sinopae sp. nov. is characterized by possessing a prostatic vesicle lined with a ridged fold in its anterior end and the presence of two secretory glandular folds in the distal dorsal wall of male atrium. Additionally, new records of Echinoplana celerrima Haswell, 1907 and Leptoplana mediterranea (Bock, 1913) are reported for the Black Sea and Turkey; and Leptoplana tremellaris (Müller OF, 1774) and Prosthiostomum siphunculus Delle Chiaje, 1822 for the coast of the Black Sea of Turkey. A short description of the reproductive behaviour of Pleioplana okusi Bulnes, Kalkan and Karahan, 2009 and Cryptocelis sinopae sp. nov. will be also provided.

Seagrass habitats play an important role in maintaining the biodiversity and functions of coastal marine ecosystems of the Black Sea. Еutrophication pressures in the 1970s and 1980s had a severe impact on phytobenthic communities, including deterioration, decrease in geographical and depth distribution and disappearance from certain areas. The state of Zostera spp. habitats in the SW Black Sea has not been studied since the 1970s. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current distribution, structure and overall condition of seagrasses in Burgas Bay, Bulgaria. Historical sites with seagrass meadows were surveyed by SCUBA diving between 2009 and 2014, using destructive sampling and georeferenced digital photogrammetry. Nutrient concentrations in water were measured seasonally at selected sites to study the effects of eutrophication on seagrasses. Seagrass biomass, shoot density, leaf length and leaf area index were measured. Species diversity and biomass of zoobenthic organisms were also determined. Community structure was analyzed with multivariate statistical methods based on photo and destructive samples.The geographical extent of the meadows was mapped in GIS on recent satellite images, then verified by georeferenced photo samples. Results indicate that most of the seagrass meadows reported in the area in the late 1970s are present today. A decrease in the depth limit of the habitat was established in areas under local eutrophication pressures. A clear depth-related change in community structure was observed, where Zostera noltei dominated the 1-3 m depth range, followed by a mixed Z. noltei – Zannichellia palustris - Zostera marina community (3-4 m) , and dominance of Z. marina between 4 and 7 m. Zoobenthic communities within seagrass meadows were dominated by the gastropods Bittium reticulatum and Rissoa sp., the bivalve Loripes lucinalis, and oligochaetes. Abundance and species richness, as well as faunal dominance were significantly higher in seagrass meadows than in adjacent unvegetated sediments. Biometric parameters of Z. noltei showed significant correlations with measured eutrophication pressures (nutrient concentrations, LUSI index, sediment organic matter content). The ecological quality status of selected meadows was evaluated by using a multimeric indicator based on Z. noltei phenology data, which also showed clear correlation with anthropogenic pressures.

<strong>Mangrove gastropod community in Perpat and Bunting Rivers, Belinyu District, Bangka Regency</strong>. Perpat and Bunting in Bangka Regency have an adequate and natural mangrove ecosystems. However, studies on the structure of the gastropod community in this ecosystem is lacking. This study aimed to discover the structure of the gastropod community in the mangrove ecosystem. This study was carried out from October to November 2019 in riverine mangrove area located in Perpat and Bunting Rivers, District Belinyu, Bangka Regency. Samples were taken from 10 x 10 m plot from six observed stations. A total of 578 individuals of gastropoda were collected, comprised of seven families and 14 species. Number of species ranged from 4 to 9, while number of individuals ranged from 35 to 214. <em>Cerithidea quoyii</em> was a dominant species with 270 individuals (47%) and found in all stations. Gastropods community was in labile condition and prone to environmental change. Species composition of gastropods were similar in both rivers with nine identical species. However, epifaunal species were found separately from arboreal species
