As the demand for over-the-top and online streaming services exponentially increases, many techniques for Quality of Experience (QoE) provisioning have been studied. Users can take actions (e.g., skipping) while streaming a video. Therefore, we should consider the viewing pattern of users rather than the network condition or video quality. In this context, we propose a proactive content-loading algorithm for improving per-user personalized preferences using multinomial softmax classification. Based on experimental results, the proposed algorithm has a personalized per-user content waiting time that is significantly lower than that of competing algorithms.

With the advanced development of IT, people are spending an increasing amount of time in the cyberspace and perceive psychological ownership of intangible objects (e.g., e-books, avatars, online movie streaming services), which they come to regard as “theirs”. This study focuses on users’ psychological ownership of OTT (over the top) services, which have recently received much attention, and investigates how service providers can present recommendation information more effectively when recommending content to users. This study, based on psychological ownership theory, specifically attempts to verify which method of recommending information is effective in correlation to the level of psychological ownership that a user feels about an online service. Additionally, this study presents this effect in terms of psychological distance, which we argue is the underlying mechanism of psychological ownership. Watcha, one of South Korea’s OTT services, was employed as the experimental subject in this study, and a scenario-based test was conducted. In conclusion, this study found that for users with high psychological ownership of online services, a recommendation information message based on objective and concrete information about a movie was more effective, whereas for users with low psychological ownership, abstractly expressed messages were more effective. Furthermore, by applying a moderated mediation model, this study confirmed that psychological distance mediated the results stated above.

AbstractThe next generation of mobile networks, widely known as 5G, was designed to respond to the next 10 years’ communication challenges. 5G will be an essential structure on which all types of electronic communications will rely. Built on the emerging 5G technology, we developed a vertical solution for blended learning environments within a Portuguese national project scope. The project aims to propose an integrated demonstration of a set of products capable of being part and providing services in the future 5G networks framework. To this end, we adopted a bottom-up approach to design and develop a product named 5GOpenclasses, where we leveraged FIWARE middleware to manage all entities. This paper presents the architecture, technological platform, associated data structures, and end-user applications of 5GOpenclasses. We also present the design of innovative location-based service for blended learning environments. This paper is the first step of the proposed product towards its quantitative evaluation when running Over-the-Top on both 4G and 5G networks. Although successful unit tests were carried out in what concerns the functional outcome, the integration tests for quantitative results depend on the availability of other project components.

To provide high-quality streaming services in device-to-device (D2D) communications, performance parameters such as encoding rate, decoding rate, and flow rate should be detected and monitored. The proposed algorithm provides a method to detect time streaming for traffic flows in D2D communications, and a sequence to detect rate imbalance. This paper proposes a new FS-CDA (flow sensing-based congestion detecting algorithm) to prevent high congestion rates and assist an optimized D2D streaming service in 5G-based wireless mobile networks. The proposed algorithm detects and controls flow imbalance for streaming segments during D2D communications, and it includes operations such as transmission rate monitoring, rate adjustment functions, and underflow and overflow sensing for these operations. The paper aims to effectively control traffic flow rates caused by adjacent channel bandwidth, high bit rate error, and heterogeneous radio interference, and to enhance the performance of D2D streaming services by performing such operations. The proposed algorithm for D2D streaming services is measured by deriving the individual weight of certain versions of a streaming flow. Based on the given operations, the simulation results indicated that the proposed algorithm has better performance with respect to average congestion control ratio, PSNR, and average throughput than other methods.
