ABSTRACTFatigue crack propagation mechanisms of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are not well understood, limiting their use in safety-critical structural applications particularly where complex fatigue loading may occur. Accordingly, the present study examines the effects of variable amplitude fatigue loading associated with block loading and tensile overloads on fatigue crack-growth rates in a Zr-based BMG. Crack growth studies were conducted on compact tension specimens using computer control of the applied stress intensity range, ΔK. Fatigue crack closure loads, which represent the initial contact of mating crack surfaces during the unloading cycle, were continuously monitored during testing. Abrupt drops in ΔK were found to significantly decrease fatigue crack-growth rates far below equilibrium values, arresting growth completely at a ΔK twice the nominal fatigue threshold ΔKTH. Conversely, an abrupt increase in ΔK was found to accelerate fatigue crack-growth rates. The effects of roughness-induced crack closure were assessed and found to be consistent with the suppression or acceleration of growth rates. However, in order to fully explain the observed transient growth rate response, other mechanisms that may be related to the fatigue mechanism itself were also considered. Specifically, the nature of the fatigue crack tip damage zone was also investigated. As BMGs lack distributed plasticity at low temperatures, the plastic zone differs greatly from that seen in ductile crystalline materials, and its role in fatigue crack propagation mechanisms is examined.

ABSTRACTThe endochronic cyclic plasticity with finite element analysis (EndoFEM) is employed to simulate plasticity-induced crack closure phenomenon of Al 2024-T3 CCT specimens under maximum cyclic stress of 80MPa and 0.1 stress ratio (R). Various fatigue crack lengths are generated by a rc dominated-node-released strategy. The suitability of element-mesh planning around crack tip is supported by the real simulations in the decreasing tendencies of crack opening load (Pop) with increased distance behind the crack tip, and the enough elements to reflect the reversed plastic responses at minimum load.EndoFEM results of vertical stress ahead of the crack tip show a typical distribution of small scale yield (SSY) in the realm of fracture mechanics; and Pop/Pmax ratio determined at 1mm behind crack tip is kept constant i.e. Kmax-independent. In these cases, fatigue parameters based on either the far field loading parameter ΔK, the effective ΔK (ΔKeff) with crack closure effect, or the mechanical responses ahead of crack tip (e.g. stress parameter, reversed (plastic) strain at 1mm) are all equivalent and are linearly correlated with the stage II fatigue crack growth (FCP) rate. However, for longer crack length with the ligament bending effect or shorter crack length with the starter notch effect, the Pop/Pmax ratio decreases and changes the SSY stress distribution. This result reduces the usefulness of the above fatigue parameters. As a consequence, a nonlinear correlation of FCP rates with ΔK or ΔKeff are purely empirical. The Kmax-dependent ΔKeff must be considered in the correlation as suggested by the present study of EndoFEM.

Reliable damage tolerant design of airframe structures relies on the accurate life prediction of fatigue cracks propagating from a detectable size to the critical size, which is challenging due to the complex load sequence effect under spectrum loading. This paper aims at gaining a further understanding of the complex influence of the loading history on fatigue damage through a detailed numerical simulation of the near-tip crack behaviour using the crack closure concept. The spectrum loading is broken down into a number of simple yet representative loading scenarios with overload/underload superimposed onto the baseline constant amplitude fatigue loading. Detailed finite element (FE) simulation of the plasticity-induced crack closure (PICC) has been carried out to catch the transient behaviour of PICC and link it to the fatigue damage. The load interaction effect has been analysed with the aim to identify the possible dominant loading cycle which could simplify the fatigue life prediction process in the industry. It is concluded that more reliable damage tolerant design can be achieved if the load sequence effect on fatigue damage can be taken into account more accurately for a structure under spectrum loadings.
