SummaryPurified humic acid has been covalently bound on activated epoxy silica gel particles. Determination of physical properties and chemical properties was conducted in order to characterize the material at different stages of the preparation. FTIR spectra and the PEC of the surface bound humic acid is very similar to that of humic acid starting material. This shows that the humic acid was not deteriorated during the surface binding process. This humic gel can be used as an analogue for sediment associated humic acid, with the advantage that covalently bound humic acid does not desorb, and thus allows for simple species separation between non-complexed and humic bound metal ions in batch and column experiments.

Product diversification is needed to increase selling and marketing prices. One of them is the African catfish sausage product. Liquid smoke has been used commercially by the food industry. This study aimed to determine the physical and chemical properties of smoked African catfish after adding different concentrations of liquid smoke and immersion duration. The chemical analysis measured the levels of protein, fat, and phenol. The results showed that sausage with a concentration of 20% liquid and soaking for 30 minutes was the best treatment with a protein content of 43.8 ± 0.34%, a fat of 12.33 ± 0.61%, and phenol 292.74 ppm. Determination of the compound using GC-MS found that the most dominant compound in the smokeless sausage was 2-hexanone, 3,3 dimethyl with a relative concentration of 32.42%. The dominant compound in the besttreated sausage was Furan, tetrahydro-2,2-dimethyl- with a relative concentration of 19%. Liquid smoke penetration is clearly visible in the microstructure of smoked sausages, both in the best-treated smoked sausages and commercial sausages. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) magnification of 2.500x shows that the best emulsified smoked sausages have a flatter structure, smaller droplets, and are more refined than smokeless sausages or commercial smoked sausages.

Sonochemical technology is a technology that involves ultrasonic waves in chemical reactions. In this study, humic acid isolated from peat soil has been successfully modified with magnetite (HA-Fe3O4) using sonochemical technology. Characterization of the physical and chemical properties of HA-Fe3O4 was carried out using FTIR, XRD, SEM and VSM. HA-Fe3O4 was used for recovery of gold from simulated gold waste (HAuCl4). FTIR characterization showed that the interaction between HA and Fe3O4 was through hydrogen bonds. The crystal size of HA-Fe3O4 using the Debye-Scherrer equation based on the XRD diffractogram was 12.4 nm. The saturation magnetization value of HA-Fe3O4 obtained was 52.80 emu/g. Adsorption studies at various pH showed that HA-Fe3O4 has been successful in recovering of gold from simulated gold waste. The % recovery of gold was 99%. Gold recovery occurs through the adsorption process followed by reduction of Au (III) to Au(0).

Rostov Region belongs to the highly protected natural territories characterized by the continuous plowing. There territories are the only reserves with the soils preserved in their natural state. However, these areas often lack detailed information about the soils quality and composition. Surveying soils on these territories is crucial for determination of their basic physical and chemical properties. The resulted compilation of soil maps could lay a foundation for creating the Red Book of Soils and the formation of a section in the soil-geographical database of the Russian Federation. Subsequently, such information can be used as a background data for the main types of soils in the region. It will be also valuable during monitoring and justification of conservation measures.
