Tristan und Isolde

Tristan und Isolde (1857-59) put this revolutionary optimism of the Ring into question. Prompted in part by his disillusionment with the failed revolution and in part by his enthusiastic reading of Schopenhauer, Wagner now realized that the erotic love that was supposed to provide the foundations of the new post-revolutionary society was singularly unsuited for this role. Eros turned out to be a cruel deity inexorably driving its devotees to transcend the finite daily realm of customary social rights and obligations and ecstatically enter the infinite metaphysical night of nothingness.

In its justly celebrated Book 3, the fast pace of action elsewhere in Apollonius’ Argonautica slows dramatically, such that Medea's erotic infatuation with Jason, and the consequent effects of this infatuation, become the central episode of the entire epic. Indeed, the role that Medea's erôs (erotic love, desire) plays in Book 3 is so great that one scholar has opined that ‘It is not the heroic as such but rather the erotic that becomes the real theme.’ However, it is not just erôs that shapes this book, but also Medea's internal battle with a number of other emotions that erôs engenders: principally grief, fear, and shame. Assessing the impact of each and understanding their interplay is complicated, however, because the text frequently presents them as occurring multifariously, or in quick succession – for example switching from erôs to grief, back to erôs, to fear, back to grief, to pity, and to grief again, all within a few lines (443–71). Accordingly I propose to disaggregate her emotions, looking at each in turn wherever it occurs, before considering how Apollonius presents them as interconnecting, and what such interconnections add to his overall presentation of Medea – especially by contrast to that of Euripides, from an emotional perspective the most important precursor.

Eros is often considered to be a desire or inclination for what is irreducibly other to the self. This view is particularly prominent among philosophers who reject a “fusion” model of erotic love in favor of one that foregrounds the difference between lovers. Drawing from this “difference” model, I argue in this essay that autoeroticism is a genuine form of Eros, even when Eros is understood to involve irreducible alterity. I claim that the autoerotic act is not adequately captured by traditional views of masturbation, where it is seen as distinct from the erotic encounter with another being. Instead, I employ Derrida and Irigaray to argue that the autoerotic act is auto-hetero-erotic, which depends on a view of the self as self-othering and heterogeneous.

This chapter traces the evolution of Wagner’s engagement with Schopenhauer’s philosophy from the 1850s through 1883. It considers Wagner’s three Schopenhauerian operas in relation to the composer’s contemporary writings, suggesting that both music and prose were vehicles through which he sought to extend and correct what he perceived as shortcomings in Schopenhauer’s work. In Tristan und Isolde and related correspondence, Wagner identified a pathway to redemption from suffering born of Schopenhauerian will, attainable through the experience of erotic love. In Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and the essay “Beethoven,” Wagner elaborated Schopenhauer’s theory of dreams to account for the origins of artistic creativity. In Parsifal and a series of essays appended to “Religion and Art,” Wagner extended Schopenhauer’s notion of compassion to include all living beings, identifying vegetarianism as one of its principal tenets and the Eucharist as its cardinal expression in ritual.

The problem of a European Constitution is discussed at a fundamental level. In which way, can we speak about such a Constitution? Thearticle argues against the “postnational souveranism”, legitimating state against citizens. A new kind of citizenship is favoured based on extended social rights. The constitution now proposed contrarily makes the European Central Bank and its neoliberal policy to central and nearly unchangeable institution.

Under the term “Hilfe zur Arbeit” (aid for work) the federal law of social welfare subsumes all kinds of labour disciplining instruments. First, the paper shows the historical connection of welfare and labour disciplining mechanisms in the context of different periods within capitalist development. In a second step, against the background of historical experiences, we will analyse the trends of “Hilfe zur Arbeit” during the past two decades. It will be shown that by the rise of unemployment, the impact of labour disciplining aspects of “Hilfe zur Arbeit” has increased both on the federal and on the municipal level. For this reason the leverage of the liberal paradigm would take place even in the core of social rights.
