An exact analytical model of frequency-variable piezoelectric stack transducers is proposed, and their dynamic characteristics are studied in this article. Based on the linear piezoelasticity theory, the dynamic analytical solution is first derived, and then its correctness is validated by comparing it with the results of a special example in the previous literature and the ones of the experimental study. The effects of the tuning resistance and the layer number of the active element on the dynamic characteristics are discussed. Numerical results show that tuning the resistance and the layer number of the active element can enable the multi-frequency characteristics of the piezoelectric stack transducers. A proper layer number of the active element can minimize the short-circuited resonance frequency and the open-circuited anti-resonance frequency. These findings provide guidelines to design and optimize the piezoelectric stack transducers, which have promising potential in developing the multi-frequency Langevin transducers for some underwater sound and ultrasonic applications, such as ultrasonic cleaning, ultrasonic chemistry, and sonar radiators.

Time has fast become one of the most important factors in global trading. While little can be done to reduce the travel time of ships, significant effort can be put into improving the efficiency of container terminal. This paper presents a simple analytical model (SAM) for predicting container dwell times and determining equipment utilization. The paper exemplifies the operations of the Port of Suva and presents an analysis of its operations. To improve the current performance, a cooperative control schema is proposed. It is shown in this paper that the prediction model and performance measures are a useful tool for container terminal planners.

AbstractIn modern warfare earth penetrating weapons are often used to defeat enemy’s hardened and deeply buried targets such as aircraft shelters and bunkers. A dual warhead system (DWS) is one of such weapons composed of a forward shaped charge (FSC) and a following through warhead (FTW). In this paper, an analytical model is first proposed to analyze the penetration of an FTW into concrete targets with pre-drilled holes and a DWS is then optimized in order to achieve its best penetration performance. The effects of various parameters on the performance of a dual warhead system penetrating a concrete target are delineated. It transpires that the present model predictions are in good agreement with available experimental data and that the results obtained may be useful for designing such weapon systems.
