Among the available soft active materials, Dielectric elastomers (DEs) possess the capability of achieving the large actuation strain under the application of high electric field. The material behavior of such elastomers is affected significantly by the change in temperature. This paper reports a 3-D finite element framework based on the coupled nonlinear theory of thermo-electro-elasticity for investigating the thermal effects on the electromechanical performance of inhomogeneously deforming dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). The material behavior of the actuator is modeled using the neo-Hookean model of hyperelasticity with temperature dependent shear modulus. An in-house computational code is developed to implement the coupled finite element framework. Firstly, the accuracy of the developed FE code is verified by simulating the temperature effects on the actuation response and pull-in instability of the benchmark homogeneously deforming planar DE actuator. Further, the influence of temperature on the electromechanical responses of complex bi-layered bending actuator and buckling pump actuator involving inhomogeneous deformation is investigated. The numerical framework and the associated inferences can find their potential use in addressing the effect of temperature in the design of electro-active polymer based actuators.

To meet critical requirements on flexible electronic devices, multifunctionalized flexible sensors with excellent electromechanical performance and temperature perception are required. Herein, lignin-reinforced thermoresponsive poly(ionic liquid) hydrogel is prepared through an ultrasound-assisted synthesized method. Benefitting from the electrostatic interaction between lignin and ionic liquid, the hydrogel displays high stretchability (over 1425%), excellent toughness (over 132 kPa), and impressive stress loading-unloading cyclic stability. The hydrogel strain sensor presents excellent electromechanical performance with a high gauge factor (1.37) and rapid response rate (198 ms), which lays the foundation for human body movement detection and smart input. Moreover, owing to the thermal-sensitive feature of poly(ionic liquid), the as-prepared hydrogel displays remarkable thermal response sensitivity (0.217°C-1) in body temperature range and low limit of detection, which can be applied as a body shell temperature indicator. Particularly, the hydrogel can detect dual stimuli of strain and temperature and identify each signal individually, showing the specific application in human-machine interaction and artificial intelligence. By integrating the hydrogel strain sensor into a wireless sensation system, remote motion capture and gesture identification is realized in real-time.

Aging is the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of mortality worldwide among aging populations. Cisd2 is a prolongevity gene that mediates lifespan in mammals. Previously, our investigations revealed that a persistently high level of Cisd2 expression in mice is able to prevent age-associated cardiac dysfunction. This study was designed to apply a genetic approach that induces cardiac-specific Cisd2 overexpression (Cisd2 icOE) at a late-life stage, namely a time point immediately preceding the onset of old age, and evaluate the translational potential of this approach. Several discoveries are pinpointed. Firstly, Cisd2 is downregulated in the aging heart. This decrease in Cisd2 leads to cardiac dysfunction and impairs electromechanical performance. Intriguingly, Cisd2 icOE prevents an exacerbation of age-associated electromechanical dysfunction. Secondly, Cisd2 icOE ameliorates cardiac fibrosis and improves the integrity of the intercalated discs, thereby reversing various structural abnormalities. Finally, Cisd2 icOE reverses the transcriptomic profile of the aging heart, changing it from an older-age pattern to a younger pattern. Intriguingly, Cisd2 icOE modulates a number of aging-related pathways, namely the sirtuin signaling, autophagy, and senescence pathways, to bring about rejuvenation of the heart as it enters old age. Our findings highlight Cisd2 as a novel molecular target for developing therapies targeting cardiac aging.

As printed electronics is evolving toward applications in biosensing and wearables, the need for novel routes to fabricate flat, lightweight, stretchable conductors is increasing in importance but still represents a challenge, limiting the actual adoption of ultrathin wearable devices in real scenarios. A suitable strategy for creating soft yet robust and stretchable interconnections in the aforementioned technological applications is to use print-related techniques to pattern conductors on top of elastomer substrates. In this study, some thin elastomeric sheets—two forms of medical grade thermoplastic polyurethanes and a medical grade silicone—are considered as suitable substrates. Their mechanical, surface, and moisture barrier properties—relevant for their application in soft and wearable electronics—are first investigated. Various approaches are tested to pattern conductors, based on screen printing of 1) conducting polymer [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)] or 2) stretchable Ag ink and 3) laser scribing of laser-induced graphene (LIG). The electromechanical properties of these materials are investigated by means of tensile testing and concurrent electrical measurements up to a maximum strain of 100%. Performance of the different stretchable conductors is compared and rationalized, evidencing the differences in onset and propagation of failure. LIG conductors embedded into MPU have shown the best compromise in terms of electromechanical performance for the envisioned application. LIG/MPU showed full recovery of initial resistance after multiple stretching up to 30% strain and recovery of functionality even after 100% stretch. These have been then used in a proof-of-concept application as connectors for a wearable tattoo biosensor, providing a stable and lightweight connection for external wiring.

In this work, we improved the electromechanical properties, electrostrictive behavior and energy-harvesting performance of poly(vinylidenefluoridene-hexafluoropropylene) P(VDF-HFP)/zinc oxide (ZnO) composite nanofibers. The main factor in increasing their electromechanical performance and harvesting power based on electrostrictive behavior is an improved coefficient with a modified crystallinity phase and tuning the polarizability of material. These blends were fabricated by using a simple electrospinning method with varied ZnO contents (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%). The effects of the ZnO nanoparticle size and content on the phase transformation, dielectric permittivity, strain response and vibration energy harvesting were investigated. The characteristics of these structures were evaluated utilizing SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR and DMA. The electrical properties of the fabrication samples were examined by LCR meter as a function of the concentration of the ZnO and frequency. The strain response from the electric field was observed by the photonic displacement apparatus and lock-in amplifier along the thickness direction at a low frequency of 1 Hz. Moreover, the energy conversion behavior was determined by an energy-harvesting setup measuring the current induced in the composite nanofibers. The results showed that the ZnO nanoparticles’ component effectively achieves a strain response and the energy-harvesting capabilities of these P(VDF-HFP)/ZnO composites nanofibers. The electrostriction coefficient tended to increase with a higher ZnO content and an increasing dielectric constant. The generated current increased with the ZnO content when the external electric field was applied at a vibration of 20 Hz. Consequently, the ZnO nanoparticles dispersed into electrostrictive P(VDF-HFP) nanofibers, which offer a large power density and excellent efficiency of energy harvesting.

This work reports on a novel magnetorheological polymer gel with carbon nanotubes and carbonyl iron particles mixed into the physical cross-linked polymer gel matrix. The resulting composites show unusual nonlinear magneto-electro-mechanical responses. Because of the low matrix viscosity, effective conductive paths formed by the CNTs were mobile and high-performance sensing characteristics were observed. In particular, due to the transient and mutable physical cross-linked bonds in the polymer gel, the electromechanical behavior acted in a rate-dependent manner. External stimulus at a high rate significantly enhanced the electrical resistance response during mechanical deformation. Meanwhile, the rheological properties were regulated by the external magnetic field when magnetic particles were added. This dual enhancement mechanism further contributes to the active control of electromechanical performance. These polymer composites could be adopted as electromechanical sensitive sensors to measure impact and vibration under different frequencies. There is great potential for this magnetorheological polymer gel in the application of intelligent vibration controls.
