Matching is integral part of all web services tasks. The effective implementation of the process of matching services with a search query, or with each other, ensures successful resolving of the problems of service discovery, building the best coverage of the search query and a complex composite service that implements the business task. All web services have own characteristics, solve different problems, use different methods, but they all also have a certain set of characteristics: functional and process models, formal description language, communication protocol, a common set of element types, such as identifiers, service messages, parameters and etc. This allows to classify services in a certain way, the analysis of these characteristics permits to define the elements and aspects of the comparison process. Today there is a huge number of services, and their number is constantly growing, and the process of services discovery is very complex and multifaceted. It should take into account the structural, syntactic, but, first of all, the semantic suitability of services, to ensure their comparative analysis according to the maximum possible number of characteristics that are significant for matching. It should be step-by-step process and it has be designed in such a way that each step reduces the set of candidates, leaving services with a greater degree of compliance. This requires algorithms that return quantitative estimates for each step, each type of matching, and algorithms that effectively generalize these estimates to define the final values of the proximity of services and the request. These researches are devoted to problems of using the descriptive logics formalisms for web services matching by their contexts, which, as a rule, contain information about the services purposes, the area of use, business functions, etc. That is, it is information representing the semantics of the service, but in text form, that is not convenient for automated processing. There are many studies that try to solve this problem by applying standard text analysis methods to contextual service descriptions. This study proposes an ontological approach to matching web services by context. It is determined the extension of the previously proposed the top-level service DL ontology. It also involves the use of a special ontology of the general textual service description, a fragment of the taxonomy of which is presented in the paper. This ontology should cover all important semantic aspects of contextual descriptions. It have not only promote to determining the matching a service and a request, but it also have to allow semantically categorizing the available services: by subject area, implemented functions, etc.

To tackle the semantic issues of Web services, this paper proposes a comprehensive semantic service description framework – CbSSDF and a two-step service discovery mechanism based on CbSSDF—to help service users to easily locate their required services. The authors give a detailed explanation of CbSSDF, and then evaluate the framework by comparing it with OWL-S to examine how the proposed framework can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service discovery and composition. The evaluation is carried out by analysing the different proposed solutions based on these two frameworks for achieving a series of tasks in a scenario.

Organizations in all sectors of business and government are pursuing service-oriented architecture (SOA) initiatives in response to their need for increased business agility. This is particularly true for mobile telecommunications companies. That is why mobile telecom operators need to research new and innovative sources of revenue. Innovation is not an easy task. It requires embracing a new way of doing business, where new technologies are fundamental. SOA architecture and Web services technology are proposed by IT industry as the best solution to create a network of partnership and new services, but despite software producer claims, interoperability issues arise with service composition. Such a problem can be significantly reduced by adopting a semantic approach in service description and service discovery. Our research is focused on new methods and tools for building high personalized, virtual e-business services. A new service provisioning architecture based on Web services has been conceived, taking into account issues related to end-user mobility. The following pages deal with a proposal for creating real localized, personalized virtual environments using Web services and domain ontologies. In particular, to overcome interoperability issues that could arise from a lack of uniformity in service descriptions, we propose a way for controlling and enforcing annotation policies based on a Service Registration Authority. It allows services to be advertised according to guidelines and domain rules. Furthermore, this solution enables enhanced service/component discovery and validation, helping software engineers to build services by composing building blocks and provision/deliver a set of personalized services.

An algorithm based on information retrieval that applies the lexical database WordNet together with a linear discriminant function is proposed. It calculates the degree of similarity between words and their relative importance to support the development of distributed applications based on web services. The algorithm uses the semantic information contained in the Web Service Description Language specifications and ranks web services based on their similarity to the one the developer is searching for. It is applied to a set of 48 real web services in five categories, then compared them to four other algorithms based on information retrieval, showing an averaged improvement over all data between 0.6% and 1.9% in precision and 0.7% and 3.1% in recall for the top 15 ranked web services. The objective was to reduce the burden and time spent searching web services during the development of distributed applications, and it can be used as an alternative to current web service discovery systems such as brokers in the Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) platform.

Web mining is the application of data mining techniques to discover patterns from the Web. Web services defines set of standards like WSDL(Web Service Description Language), SOAP(Simple Object Access Protocol) and UDDI(Universal Description Discovery and Integration) to support service description, discovery and invocation in a uniform interchangeable format between heterogeneous applications. Due to huge number of Web services and short content of WSDL description, the identification of correct Web services becomes a time consuming process and retrieves a vast amount of irrelevant Web services. This emerges the need for the efficient Web service mining framework for Web service discovery. Discovery involves matching, assessment and selection. Various complex relationships may provide incompatibility in delivering and identifying efficient Web services. As a result the web service requester did not attain the exact useful services. A research has emerged to develop method to improve the accuracy of Web service discovery to match the best services. In the discovery of Web services there are two approaches are available namely Semantic based approach and Syntactic based approach. Semantic based approach gives high accuracy than Syntactic approach but it takes high processing time. Syntactic based approach has high flexibility. Thus, this paper presents a survey of semantic based and syntactic based approaches of Web service discovery system and it proposed a novel approach which has better accuracy and good flexibility than existing one. Finally, it compares the existing approaches in web service discovery.

Information retrieval-based Web service discovery approach suffers from the semantic sparsity problem caused by lacking of statistical information when the Web services are described in short texts. To handle this problem, external information is often utilized to improve the discovery performance. Inspired by this, we propose a novel Web service discovery approach based on a neural topic model and leveraging Web service labels. More specifically, words in Web services are mapped into continuous embeddings, and labels are integrated by a neural topic model simultaneously for embodying external semantics of the Web service description. Based on the topic model, the services are interpreted into hierarchical models for building a service querying and ranking model. Extensive experiments on several datasets demonstrated that the proposed approach achieves improved performance in terms of F-measure. The results also suggest that leveraging external information is useful for semantic sparse Web service discovery.

The growing number of the Web Services available on the Web without explicit associated semantic descriptions raises a new and challenging research problem: How to discover efficiently the relevant Web Services that fulfill the user expectations. However, many services that are relevant to a specific user service request may not be considered during the service discovery process. In this paper, the authors address the issue of the Web Service discovery given nonexplicit service description semantics that match a specific service request. Their approach is based on a captured user goal from an HTML form and the traceability and involves semantic-based service categorization, semantic discovery and selection of the best Web Service. Furthermore, the authors' proposal employs ontology matching algorithms to match a specific goal to an existing Web Service. An experimental test of the proposed framework related to the Medical Analysis domain is reported, showing the impact of the proposal in decreasing the time and the effort of the discovery process as a whole.

A Web service is an interface that describes a collection of operations that are network accessible through standardized XML (extensible markup language) messaging specifications such as SOAP, WSDL (Web service description language), and UDDI to provide open, XML-based mechanisms for application interoperability, service description, and service discovery (Kim & Jain, 2005). They are self-contained, modular units of application logic that provide business functionality to other applications via an Internet connection (Srivastava & Koehler, 2003). Although Web services are a relatively new concept, they provide a solution to the set of serious problems that have plagued enterprise systems using a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Web services address a similar set of problems that middleware technologies such as CORBA, RPC, COM, and RMI address by providing a tightly coupled and vendor-driven proprietary environment for implementing SOA.
