Abstract A new type all optical vibration and acceleration sensor using the combination of micromachined Si cantilever and optical fiber is proposed, and its fundamental characteristics are demonstrated. The light emitted from bulb-lens set into the V-groove is reflected at the reflector formed on the Si cantilever and then recoupled into the bulb-lens. Several sensors with different length (0.64–6.0 mm long) of the Si cantilever are fabricated to compare the theoretical resonance frequency fr obtained from the simple model and experimental ones. They had good agreement. From the sensing principle the sensing frequency range of the vibration is suitable below the fr of the Si cantilever of the sensor.

The state of the wheel surface after dressing is important for processing of a surface to the nano-order level. A laser dresser was developed using ultraviolet (UV) laser light, which imparts no mechanical damage to the resin bond. One feature of this system is that UV laser energy is transmitted by a special optical fiber for UV light, and is transmitted only to the resin bond. Using this newly developed laser dresser, it was possible to ablate the resin bond to a depth of over 2 microns using a fiber with a core diameter of 200 microns.

Nowadays, as a new type of optical fiber devices, with flexible structure characteristic and steady frequency-selecting performance among the key support device areas of optic fiber technology, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is rapidly developed as an very important basic device. Therefore, the study of phase mask plate which will be good for the mass production of the optical fiber gratings is becoming a central issue. The appearance of phase mask plate technology makes the industrialized production of fiber optical gratings with a stable wavelength possible. This paper based on the optical fiber gratings written online is mainly about the study of related servo control system. By the design of the servo control system of phase mask plate, we will get the ideal purposes that phase mask plate is precisely positioned, torque of plate is increased and the time of picking any plate is undifferentiated.

Plastic optical fiber (POF) is a new type of sensing material. Compared with traditional quartz optical fiber, it has the advantages of good tenacity, low cost, easy processing, and high sensitivity. A new type of POF-Fatigue sensor (nPOF-Fs) is designed by using POF, which is based on the changes the luminous flux. The change in the relative displacement of the two ends of the fiber is obtained through the change in the luminous flux in the POF, which is later converted into an electrical signal by the photoelectric conversion device. By collecting and analyzing the signals, accurate measurement of the dynamic response of the workpiece is achieved. Combined with the signal processing algorithm that can detect and monitor the crack expansion of steel structures under cyclic loading based on the RMS envelope and Hilbert transform filters, the fatigue crack can be monitored in real-time. The results obtained by nPOF-Fs are fundamentally coincide with the results acquired by the COD sensor. In view of the higher cost of monitoring with the COD sensor, the use of a POF sensor combined with a signal processing algorithm in monitoring the occurrence and expansion of fatigue cracks has great potential in the field of structural monitoring.
