Background: Dioctophymosis is caused by Dioctophyma renale, a parasite known as the giant kidney worm, that can parasitize the kidneys of domestic and wild animals. There are also reports of its occurrence in humans, thus revealing its zoonotic potential. In most cases, parasitized animals are asymptomatic. This parasite can cause atrophy or destroy the renal parenchyma, although ectopic locations may occur. The diagnosis is made through ultrasonography, based on the presence of eggs in the urine, visualization of the parasite, or during necropsy. Therefore, the aim of this work was to report the case of a young dog infected with D. renale and subjected to nephrectomy in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.Case: A 6-month-old bitch with a clinical suspicion of hydronephrosis in the right kidney was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of Anhanguera-Uniderp University in the city of Campo Grande, MS. A physical examination of the patient revealed an alteration in the urinary system.  An abdominal ultrasound, urinalysis, complete blood count (CBC) tests and biochemical profile were ordered. The erythrogram indicated erythrocytosis resulting from dehydration and loss of body fluids, while enzyme levels (creatinine, urea, alanine aminotransferase [ALT] and albumin) were within normal limits. The abdominal ultrasound showed the presence of a cylindrical and rounded structure characteristic of a nematode and in the right kidney, and loss of renal parenchyma typical of D. renale infection. A urinalysis then revealed the presence of helminth eggs, confirming the diagnosis. The owner was informed about the need for nephrectomy of the affected right kidney, which showed destruction of the renal parenchyma. One adult female and one adult male parasite were removed from inside the kidney, measuring approximately 50 cm and 35 cm in length. The patient was successfully treated, kept in hospital for observation, and returned two weeks later for reassessment of her renal function and removal of stitches. Discussion: Dioctophymosis is often diagnosed based on ultrasound and urine tests. These tests proved sufficient to diagnose parasitism by D. renale. However, the infection is usually discovered during necropsy.  D. renale is popularly known as the giant kidney worm, as it can reach up to 100 cm in length. In the present case, the female parasite was 50 cm long and the male was 35 cm. The patient presented parasitism very young, at just 6 months of age. The parasitic infection of the animal was attributed to the ingestion of water or food contaminated with an intermediate host, the aquatic annelid Lumbriculus variegatus. It is suggested that the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the infective stage of the parasite may have occurred at 2 months of age or younger, since the prepatent period is approximately 6 months. The parasite was found only in the patient’s right kidney. Hydronephrosis was reported in the patient and was caused by obstruction of the internal urethral ostium by the adult nematode. In this case, the recommended surgical treatment was nephrectomy, to which the patient was subjected, leading to successful recovery. This case occurred in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, where there are no records of parasitism by D. renale in domestic dogs, unlike other states in Brazil. We therefore emphasize the importance of new studies on D. renale, given the lack of clear records describing the parasite’s epidemiological data, biological cycle and diagnosis, which may hinder the prevention and control of this zoonotic disease.Keywords: canine dioctophymosis, helminth, nematoid, giant kidney worm, hydronephrosis.Descritores: dioctofimose canina, helminto, nematoide, verme gigante renal, hidronefrose.

Information on alkaline coordination nitrates of rare-earth elements of the cerium subgroup - precursors of promising modern multifunctional materials - on the conditions of their formation and existence, the nature of the chemical bond, the composition, structure, shape of the Ln coordination polyhedra, the type of ligand coordination, and the existence of isotypic series in stoichiometry are generalized. composition, structure, characteristic properties. The data obtained (as primary information) is the basis for the detection, identification, and control of the phase state of processing objects in the preparatory stages, the choice of criteria for the compatibility of the components in the formation of single-layer and layered nanostructured oxide composite systems of lanthanides and transition elements for general purposes, with catalytic and photocatalytic activity, coatings self-cleaning with hydrophilic properties; development of various combined methods for their activation and identification of technological functional dependencies; controlled modification of the properties of the obtained target products. To increase the photocatalytic activity of coating samples based on highly dispersed anatase TiO2, a methodology for chemical modification of oxidation centers in their surface layer with heat treatment in contact with thermolysis products of alkaline coordination lanthanide nitrate melts is proposed. An effective test photocatalytic destruction of organic substrates vapors has been discovered using ethanol as an example.Effective activation of the functioning of functional units in the composition of self-adjusting air purification complexes using new photocatalytically active three-layer perovskite-like oxide materials M2Ln2Ti3O10 (M - Li, Na, K; Ln - La, Nd) has been proven. The variability of such methods for creating and modifying the characteristics of polyfunctional coatings is determined by the number and individual properties of representatives of the natural series of lanthanides, alkali metals of the periodic system, the peculiarities of their cooperative behavior in the preparatory technological stages, conditions and methods of activation of formation processes, the nature of the substrate, and other factors.

Green nephrites are widely pursued for their mild texture and vivid color. In recent years, many Russian green nephrites appeared in China (the world’s largest nephrite market) and competed with the Chinese Manas green nephrites, which are traditionally highly valued. In this study, we compared the appearance, mineralogy and geochemical features (with EPMA and LA-ICP-MS) of Chinese (Manas) and Russian (East Sayan) green nephrites to objectively characterize and distinguish between these two nephrites. Chinese (Manas) and Russian (East Sayan) green nephrites are mined from serpentinized ultramafic units in the northern Tian Shan and East Sayan orogen, respectively. In terms of appearance, the Manas green nephrites are slightly bluish or grayish, whilst their East Sayan counterparts are brighter (duck-egg cyan). The Manas nephrites commonly have a caramel color, crumple structure, characteristic white globules and sinuous veins, green stains and yellow–green veins, together with a local fibrous structure. The East Sayan green nephrites are more transparent, with a gentler fine texture, uniform color, many black spots and a few green spots. Some green nephrites from the Arahushun mine of East Sayan have an ice-like appearance. Microscopic petrography and EPMA analysis indicate that both the Manas and East Sayan green nephrites comprise mainly tremolite with minor actinolite. Minor minerals in the Manas samples include chromite, chlorite-group minerals, and uvarovite; whilst those in the East Sayan samples include actinolite, chromite, chlorite-group minerals, and bornite. Bornite is not found in any other sources of green nephrite, and thus is characteristic of Russian (East Sayan) green nephrites. LA-ICP-MS trace element data in their amphiboles and Single-Factor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) results suggest that the differences in Cr, Zn, Y, Ba, and Sr contents and values of δEu, Eu/Sm, (La/Yb)N, (La/Sm)N, (Gd/Yb)N, ∑HREE, ∑LREE/∑HREE between the two nephrites are present, and can be used as their origin trace.

The disposal of vegetable wastes in nature is harmful for marine habitats and biota. These types of waste are frequently used as fuel, generating polluting products, with undesired side effects on the environment. Therefore, it is essential to find better alternatives for the capitalisation of these waste products. Their diversified chemical composition can become a potential resource of high added value raw materials. The knowledge of the physicochemical properties of these wastes is therefore essential. The present work aimed for characterising the physicochemical properties of a plant residue belonging to the Asteraceae Family, collected from a vegetable market in Fez city, Morocco. The vegetal tissues were analysed by Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with EDX, X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, and by Thermogravimetric/Differential thermal analyses. Other additional parameters were also measured, such as moisture, volatile matter, ash, and fixed carbon contents. Acidic and basic surface functions were evaluated by Boehm’s method, and pH points at zero charge were equally calculated. The results revealed a strong congruence between the morphological and structural properties of this plant. These vegetal wastes comprise a homogeneous fibrous and porous aspect both in surface and in profile, with a crystalline structure characteristic of cellulose I. A mass loss of 86.49% for leaves and 87.91% for stems in the temperature range of 100 °C to 700 °C, and pHpzc of 8.39 for leaves and 7.35 for stems were found. This study clarifies the similarities and differences between the chemical composition and morphological structure of these vegetal wastes, paving the way for future value-added applications in appropriate fields.

The slippery zone of Nepenthes alata depends on its highly evolved morphology and structure to show remarkable superhydrophobicity, which has gradually become a biomimetic prototype for developing superhydrophobic materials. However, the mechanism governing this phenomenon has not been fully revealed through model analysis. In this paper, the superhydrophobicity of slippery zone is studied by contact angle measurement, morphology/structure examination and model analysis. The slippery zone causes ultrapure water droplet to produce a considerably high contact angle (155.11–158.30°), and has a micro-nano scale hierarchical structures consisting of lunate cells and wax coverings. According to the Cassie-Baxter equation and a self-defined infiltration coefficient, a model was established to analyze the effect of structure characteristic on the contact angle. Analysis result showed that the calculated contact angle (154.67–159.49°) was highly consistent with the measured contact angle, indicating that the established model can quantitatively characterize the relationship between the contact angle and the structure characteristic. Our study provides some evidences to further reveal the superhydrophobic mechanism of Nepenthes alata slippery zone, as well as inspires the biomimetic development of superhydrophobic surfaces.

The objective of this study was to prepare bio adsorbents from agro-industrial wastes from yam starch (YSR) and plantain (PSR) production for its use in the removal of Cr (VI) and Ni (II) in aqueous solution in batch and continuous packed-bed column systems. Bromatological analysis showed that the biomaterials are rich in cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, and SEM micrographs that evidence a mesoporous structure characteristic of materials of lignocellulosic origin. FTIR evidenced functional groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, and methyl, possibly involved in the uptake of metal ions. EDS and FTIR analysis after adsorption confirmed that the retention of the metals on the surface of the adsorbent materials was successful. Cr (VI) and Ni (II) removal efficiencies above 80% were achieved using YSR and PSR in batch systems at the different conditions evaluated. The optimum conditions for removing Ni (II) on PSR were a bed height of 11.4 cm and a temperature of 33 °C, while for YSR, they were: 43 °C and 9 cm for temperature and bed height respectively. The variable with the most significant influence on the removal of Cr (VI) in a batch system on the two bio adsorbents was temperature. In contrast, the adsorbent dose and temperature are relevant factors for PSR Ni (II) removal. Therefore, the residues from the preparation of yam and plantain starch have high potential for removing heavy metals from wastewater and are presented as an alternative for their final disposal.

ABSTRACTKinesins are motor proteins found in all eukaryotic lineages that move along microtubule tracks to mediate numerous cellular processes such as mitosis and intracellular transport of cargo. In trypanosomatids, the kinesin protein superfamily has undergone a prominent expansion, giving these protists one of the most diverse kinesin repertoires. This has led to the emergence of two trypanosomatid-restricted groups of kinesins. Here, we characterize in Trypanosoma brucei TbKifX2, a hitherto orphaned kinesin that belongs to one of these groups. Representing a rare instance, TbKifX2 tightly interacts with TbPH1, a kinesin-like protein with an inactive motor domain. TbPH1 is named after a pleckstrin homology (PH) domain present within its carboxy-terminal tail. TbKifX2 recruits TbPH1 to the microtubule quartet (MtQ), a characteristic but poorly understood cytoskeletal structure that is part of the multipartite flagellum attachment zone (FAZ) and extends from the basal body to the anterior of the cell body. The proximal proteome of TbPH1 is comprised of four proteins that localize to the FAZ, consistent with the notion that the TbKifX2/TbPH1 complex are the first identified proteins to bind the MtQ along its whole length. Simultaneous ablation of both TbKifX2 and TbPH1 leads to the formation of prominent protrusions from the cell posterior. Thus, these two trypanosomatid-restricted proteins, which specifically localize to the MtQ in a microtubule-rich cell, appear to be contributors to morphogenesis in T. brucei.IMPORTANCETrypanosomatids are a group of unicellular parasites that infect a wide range of hosts from land plants to animals. They are also eukaryotes that have been shaped by prolonged independent evolution since this domain of life has radiated from a common ancestor almost 2 billion years ago. Thus, any resulting unique biological properties can be potentially exploited for treatment of infectious diseases caused by trypanosomatids. The cytoskeleton of trypanosomatids represents an ancient organelle that has undergone such modification. Here, we show that two trypanosomatid-specific proteins named TbPH1 and TbKifX2 form a complex that localizes to the microtubule quartet, a cytoskeletal structure characteristic to trypanosomatids. Ablation of these proteins in Trypansoma brucei leads to distinct morphological defects, making them not only intrinsically interesting topics of study, but potential therapeutic targets as well.

The existence of decomposition solutions of the well-known nonlinear BKP hierarchy is analyzed. It is shown that these decompositions provide simple and interesting relationships between classical integrable systems and the BKP hierarchy. Further, some special decomposition solutions display a rare property: they can be linearly superposed. With the emphasis on the case of the fifth BKP equation, the structure characteristic having linear superposition solutions is analyzed. Finally, we obtain similar superposed solutions in the dispersionless BKP hierarchy.
