A competent, modern textbook on pediatric urology must encompass more than just a description of morphological anomalies and techniques for surgical repair. To reflect the true state of the art, it must contain a sophisticated integration of information from many disciplines. The present-day pediatric urologist thinks in terms of genetic, metabolic, endocrinologic, neurologic, psychologic, oncologic, and nephrologic disease factors. A new text devoted to pediatric urology muust therefore incorporate a huge volume of information in order to justify its relevance.

Members of the Section on Urology of the American Academy of Pediatrics met for 2½ days in conjunction with the 59th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Boston, Massachusetts, October 6 to October 8, 1990. The meeting was presided over by Chairperson David T. Mininberg of Cornell University, New York. The papers presented at this meeting that are of interest to the practicing pediatrician are summarized here according to topic. The Pediatric Urology Medal, awarded to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field of pediatric urology, was presented to Dr Frank Hinman, Jr. of the University of California. San Francisco. Dr Hinman was recognized for his many years of work dedicated to improving the urologic care of children. A foremost clinician, teacher, and researcher, he has contributed particularly to the understanding of urinary tract infections and bladder dysfunction in children, particularly those children who have "Hinman Syndrome," the non-neurogenic neurogenic bladder. Dr Hinman has been a strong advocate for the specialized urologic care of children for many years. GENITOURINARY NEOPLASMS Wilms' tumor is one disease in which there has been impressive progress in recent years, particularly with the advent of effective chemotherapy that has enabled these children to have increased disease-free survival. Montgomery and co-workers from the Mayo Clinic reviewed the experience of patients with bilateral Wilms' tumor during the past 16 years. Ten-year survival was 69%. Seventy-five percent of the failures resulted from recurrent disease (which generally occurred early), and 25% resultes from treatment complications.

The National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) ceased operation in September 2014 and was succeeded by NSLS-II. There were four in-vacuum undulators (IVUs) in operation at NSLS. The most recently constructed IVU for NSLS was the mini-gap undulator (MGU-X25, to be renamed IVU18 for NSLS-II), which was constructed in 2006. This device was selected to be reused for the New York Structural Biology Consortium Microdiffraction beamline at NSLS-II. At the time of construction, IVU18 was a state-of-the-art undulator designed to be operated as a cryogenic permanent-magnet undulator. Due to the more stringent field quality and impedance requirements of the NSLS-II ring, the transition region was redesigned. The control system was also updated to NSLS-II specifications. This paper reports the details of the IVU18 refurbishment activities including additional magnetic measurement and tuning.

Overview This update focuses on current practices and controversies in surgical repair of the hard and soft palate posterior to the alveolus. Our current understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of presurgical active and passive manipulation of the hard palate shelves including the use of periosteoplasty is reviewed. The evolution of the multiple methods of repair of the hard and soft palate is given in a historical context along with a discussion of the concerns about timing of palate repair.
