This article carries out the numerical simulation of airflow over three dimensional car models using ANSYS Fluent software. The calculations have been performed by using realizable k-e turbulence model. The external airflow field of the simplified BMV M6 model with or without a wing is simulated. Several aerodynamic characteristics such as pressure distribution, velocity contours, velocity vectors, streamlines, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation energy are analyzed in this study. The aerodynamic forces acting on the car model is calculated and compared with other authors.

This study presents a new dynamic modeling of a vehicle by considering the engine dynamics. By selecting the vehicle coordinate system as the reference frame, all the force-torque equations of the sprung mass and unsprung masses are derived in this coordinate system by using the Newton’s equations of motion. Unlike the previous researches, in this work the sprung mass of the vehicle is not considered as a rigid body. The dynamics of the sprung mass components, such as gyroscopic effects of the engine crankshaft, is considered. In order to study the vehicle's dynamic behavior, in the J-turn maneuver, the governing equations of the full-car model are evaluated and validated by the numerical simulation method and ADAMS/Car software. Based on the results, the maximum roll angle and roll rate of a vehicle reach about 8 degrees and 40 degrees per second, respectively.

A digital car model was taken as study object, and the influence of the regulating seam to an open type automobile wind tunnel was discussed by comparing simulation results with test data. The results show that the regulating seam changes the flow field around the collector, reduces the size of unsteady flow field and the flow in test section is uniformed better. Thus, the regulating seam shouldn’t be removed when simplifying the wind tunnel model in the simulation. This conclusion will provide theoretical basis and data support for better virtual reproduction and numerical simulation of a wind tunnel.

The two turbulence models were used to numerically simulate the external flow field around the Ahmed standard car model, and the aerodynamic drag and lift coefficients and aerodynamic characteristics around model were obtained. By comparison between the simulation results and the corresponding wind tunnel test data, the differences of two turbulence models were analyzed. The results indicated the simulation result of RNG k-εturbulence model is more precision, and it is more suitable on numerical simulation in vehicle external flow field. The conclusions provide reference for how to select turbulence model.
